Clinical Year Update #1 - Discussing First Email and Clinical Year Schedule, Apartment Hunting
In today's video, I go through my first email from Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine regarding important information about my upcoming clinical year. In my second email, I received my clinical year schedule and started working on applying for externships. During December 2024, I took a trip with my family to Blacksburg, Virginia to check out six apartments and looked around my new campus. After visiting Virginia, I came home and decided to trade in my old car for a new one that could handle the mountains and snow a little better. :) Make sure to subscribe to the channel, like this video, and look out for more updates as I get closer to my clinical year! See you next time!

Welcome back to another vlog! Since there has been a lot of interest in my surgery days as a vet student, I wanted to do another day in the life on one of my spay surgery days. :) I know that I might get some complaints about my thumbnail with my desk being really cluttered but this is the reason why I showed it because it is the reality for me on a surgery day. College Day in My Life as a Veterinary Student - Handling the Loss of My First Patient

During my first shift at the small animal clinic, we had an emergency case come in that was unfortunately euthanized the following day due to the patient not responding to treatment. It was very emotional and difficult to get through as this was my first loss as a veterinary student. Even though I was pretty sad throughout the day, I did attend classes and study. On this channel, I have shown a...

Two Week Vacation in East Lansing MI During the Winter - Visiting My Best Friend, Exploring MSU Area
Hey! I'm a Term 1 Vet Student and your videos have been so helpful! I just had some few questions! - How long is the entire process from choosing your clinical school list to getting the assignment? - How much is the average electricity bill for off campus living? - Where do students buy/receive the SGU (Nomatic) backpack?
Hi Lucy! Congratulations on starting vet school! For the clinical year question, we had to submit our top 5 schools two weeks in the start of Term 5. SGU told us a day before our midterms during that term on where they were sending our application to. I got notification from my clinical school about two weeks after that but a lot of my classmates still have not received a confirmation from their schools yet and/or have not received their schedules yet and now we are Term 6 students. It really depends on which school you want as your clinical school on when you hear back. My average electricity bill is around $100 extra a month and keep in mind that I don't have mine on all the time because I don't have a pet or significant other at home that needs air conditioning. I've heard from some of my other classmates who have pets that they can pay anywhere from $200-$400 extra a month because they leave their air conditioning on. If you are talking about the backpack that I used for one of my externships, that backpack was actually a special item that one of the terms created for their fundraiser so you would have to wait until it becomes available again (if it does). I bought mine about a year ago and I have not seen it being sold again yet. Hopefully one of the other class terms will think about creating another backpack soon since it was popular. :) If you are talking about the backpacks that the medical students get, the veterinary students do not get that bag and unfortunately I don't believe that the bookstore sells those. Hope this helps answer your questions! Good luck on your first term! Feel free to reach out if you have any additional questions!
Hello! I love watching your videos! I just moved to the island earlier this week and I am about to start term 1 of veterinary school! Do you have any tips on how to survive out here or places that you love to go? 😊
I'm glad you love watching the videos! :) Congratulations on starting vet school! :) For any new student coming to Grenada, I would highly recommend that you find something that you enjoy outside of vet school. School is very tough at SGU and you will need that outlet to keep yourself sane during the next four years. I highly recommend you have a to-do-list or a daily calendar that will help you keep organized and definitely schedule in time to take for yourself so you are not studying all the time. Some of the places I really love to go is BBC Beach, Antonio's is a great restaurant if you love Italian food, and the Antonio's Expresso coffee at the Bayfront Apartments is really good as well for their coffee and pastries. Umbrellas is also another great restaurant that is on Grand Anse Beach. If you have any additional questions, please feel free to reach out anytime! I check my comments pretty regularly, but you are more than welcome to reach out on my Instagram too! Good luck with your first term! :)

Would you mind sharing your academic background when you first applied for vet school? And how did you improve your resume.
Hi! I can definitely make a video about that in the next couple of weeks because it is a lot to explain in writing! :)

Hey Ashley! My son and I love watching your channel and your journey into becoming a veterinarian! We will be moving to the island next semester so I can start my journey though vet school and I can't wait! Do you have any good recommendations for pet friendly apartments or things to do/ look forward to for the island and SGU? Thanks!
Hi! Thank you so much! :) I'm really glad you enjoy watching my channel! :) For the pet friendly apartments, I would highly recommend that you check out the Grand Anse and Lance Aux Epines areas since True Blue (where campus is located) does not have many good apartment options that are pet friendly. You can definitely start checking out apartments in those areas to see what would work best for you on facebook.com/groups/155405167916998 or facebook.com/groups/360702797617992. To get in touch with a lot of the landlords here, you will want to use their WhatsApp number on their websites, not their emails since most do not check their email. For things to do on the island, I highly recommend doing a waterfall hike while you are here if you or your son enjoys that, the Underwater Sculpture Park is amazing to see if you enjoy snorkeling, the scuba diving here is incredible as well, the Belmont Estate is really cool, and going hiking in Grand Etang. All of the beaches are very nice (BBC is probably my favorite beach to go to) to watch the sunset or just relax a little bit from the stress of school. SGU itself has a lot of different clubs you can join so honestly anything you are interested in, there is usually a club for it to do excursions, wet labs, and extra fun stuff. I would also suggest you join one of the One Health One Medicine events to help out the community with free veterinary and medical services. There are tons of other fun things to do on the island, but these are definitely some of the highlights for me while I've been in Grenada! :) Hope this helps answer your questions!
Hello I recently had the opportunity to explore your UA-cam channel. I must say that I am impressed with the quality of content you are creating. Your video doesn't have a good Thumbnail. it has come to my attention that the title description, video tag, video SEO and high-volume keywords are not included ―This is why you don't get much more views from your content . I also saw in your videos that your videos are not S.E.O friendly (Search Engine Optimization) while you upload video. It will be for the betterment of your UA-cam channel to grow your subscribers, views, and engagement 4x faster. If you want I can send you a audit file of your channel issues.
I appreciate the offer, but I'm good at the moment. Thank you for stopping by!

OMG happy birthday! ik im a little late but still... HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!
Thank you! :)
Happy Birthday! I am moving to Grenada for the January 2025 class of the SVM! Any advice or tips for someone new coming into Grenada? Thanks!
Thank you! :) Congratulations on getting into vet school! For SGU, I would definitely recommend coming to the island with an open mind and welcome to change, because this school is not really like the US schools. Things happen pretty slow on the island (known as island time :)). The curriculum is very challenging so don't expect to be at the beach every weekend. Explore other areas of veterinary medicine to see what you are interested in and try to explore the island a bit on some of the Grenadian holidays to take a break from studying. Since we pretty much all are away from our homes, you will notice that your classmates will become more like family because you are all in the same boat. If you have any other questions, please feel free to reach out anytime!
Thank you so much I really appreciate you and your videos! 💕

Hi Ashley! I'm a first year vet student at the WCVM in Canada. I thought it was cool to see the difference between schools! I could not imagine venipunture on a fish haha, but the learning to suture practise I can relate to! Practise makes perfect, right? :) Goodluck in your term 4.
Very true that practice makes perfect :) Thank you and I wish you luck in your term as well!
I enjoyed the video so much :) it was so good and so intriguing! :)
I'm glad you enjoyed it! :)
Wonderful video Ash 😊
Thank you!
Thank you for sharing this, this crushes my dreams. I have no large animal vets accepting new patients within hours of me. Its sad that there is a shortage of DVM'S and the schooling is so costly. The cost must deter so many people as the job itself is very demanding physically and mentally. I've been working and trying to save and I've come to the conclusion that I will never be able to do this. You shouldn't have to sacrifice so much, live minimally and be in so much debt. Best of luck
It definitely is not an easy profession when considering finances because it does cost so much. I'm grateful that I have been given the opportunity though to do what I love as a job for the rest of my life. There's definitely a lot of hard moments, but I cherish the moments that are wonderful which keeps me going despite the massive amount of debt I'm going to be in once I get out of school. I'm hoping that one day vet school won't be this costly and that they open up more vet schools in the future to help curve the shortage. I wish you all the best as well and I hope that you can do something within the profession because we need more passionate people in this field like yourself.
YOU GOT THIS!!!
Thank you!
GOOD MORNING ASHLEY
Good morning! Have a great day! Thanks for stopping by!
Have you tried putting an ice pack on the back of your neck and putting your hands and feet in hot water?
I have tried putting an ice pack at the back of my neck which does help a lot, but I have not tried putting my hands and feet in hot water at the same time. I'll definitely have to try that next time to see if that helps me. Thank you for your suggestion! :)
Thank you for sharing your experience. I thought about being a vet tech a few years ago. I volunteered at a shelter for a summer but the medication I was on made it impossible for me to stand the heat for long. I'm off that, but I enjoy stronger bonds with fewer animals, and true companionship. Well, I hope you have a good time in school. I'm sure you'll make a great vet when you're done. I appreciate you guys taking care of my Mr. Keiko. He's a loving cat. I talk to him all of the time. He talks back and did with another resident today. He's half -human, and I'm half-cat.
You're welcome and thank you for the compliment! I'm glad that the SGU students were able to take care of Mr. Keiko. :)
@@futuredvmashleylong sorry, I'm not there. I meant vets in general, sorry. I don't always convey online properly. He is a wonderful cat, however. It's cute, when he doesn't want to be seen, he puts his face on a wall and thinks you can't see him. And, of course, he likes to order me around and requires that every dish he uses must be washed after he's done, or he will puke when you add more food. I appreciate the way he herds me at times when I'm blue. Not to overshare. Good luck
He sounds like a wonderful cat! :) Cats are definitely loyal to their owners and I'm so glad that you have a special one that connects with you!@@LivingDead53

Hi how long did it take to hear back from the sgu? :^) Congrats 🎉🎉🎉
Hi Sarah! I submitted my application about a month early, so I heard back sooner than most. As soon as I applied, the next day I was invited to do an interview and 2 weeks after the interview I was accepted. They told me it could take 12 weeks for me to hear back from them after the interview was completed. I've heard from quite a few people that it took that long for them to hear back from SGU, but they submitted later than I did so I'm not quite sure why I heard back so early on in the process. This was a few years ago, so I'm not certain what the timeline is now since more people appear to be applying to vet school. They should let you know during the interview when to expect to hear back from the school. Hope this helps! :)
Are the finals being tested on, from the midterm to final? Or is it on the entire semester?
Hi Sarah! It depends on the class, but for Anatomy specifically, your final exam is cumulative of all the information you have learned throughout the term.
How long did the Physio Midterm take you to complete? How many questions? Do you remember? :)
For the Physiology I course, it took me about an hour to go through all the questions twice. We had around 60-70 questions (sorry I don't remember the exact number, but this was the range).
Can you please show us the inside of the closet?
Hi! I'll make sure to post what the closet looks like on the inside on my Facebook page this coming Sunday (7/9). I've been trying to figure out a way to show what it looks like here, but it's not letting me upload a picture to show you what it looks like. Hey, Ashley! Do you know if SGU accepts online labs? I am receiving conflicting information. I just need to know if I need to retake some classes because my college only offered online labs in chemistry this semester. 😅
Hi Taylor! I reached out to the director of admissions at SGU and I'm just waiting for a response now, but once I hear back from her, I will let you know what she says. Since all my labs were in-person during undergrad, I wanted to make sure I didn't provide you with any incorrect information about SGU's policy on online labs.
Hi Taylor! I heard from Lysa Selli, director of admissions at SGU, and she mentioned that online labs are not accepted unless they were taken during the height of the pandemic. If you have any additional questions for her, here is her email: lselli@sgu.edu
