really??, your friends must be from Queensland as in the south we get told we sound very British middle upperclassed, meaning we say path with an "u" sound over the eastern states sharp "A" sound, sort of derived from the cockney accent. Queenslandians tend to elongate things like peeergla over Pergola.

Sorry about that. I meant to say aussie's pronounce "six" as "seeks". It is a well known fact that the aussie accent replaces any "i" with two "e's". Example, "fish and chips" becomes "feesh and cheeps". How do I know this? Because I have several Australian friends, who I get on great with, and this is how they talk. I don't mind it at all, I quite like the quirky Aussie accent!
