I was attempting to film this kit of rollers before they got shipped to Oahu when this Peregrine Falcon makes it's appearance and creates havoc with the kit. Yes, we do have falcons here.

This 14 lb. 1 oz. Awa hit while I was just about to eat my Kawamoto's Okazuya lunch. The young guy was with grandpa who was teaching him how to cast and I let him fight the fish for a while. #fishing #bigisland #hawaii #tica #daiwa

Slipped and fell while landing this Awa (Milkfish). Broke a 10 month old Tica Salmon/Steelhead and a Daiwa BG 3500. It took over a year to get a replacement pole and main shaft for the BG. #fishing #bigisland #hawaii #tica #daiwa

Hogs and Frogs in Hawaii

This is what I occasionally see in my yard and what I hear every single night. The hogs do a little damage to the yard but they taste good. The coqui frogs have no redeeming qualities.

Definitely a great fishing spot
Nice catch! Always wanted to try hook up on one of these but never know the setup, type of hooks to use.
Killer! Curious on your set up. Looked like fairly light tackle.
I had 15 lb test on this one. Pole is a 10-6 Tica Galant-Z MH. Reel is a Daiwa BG 3500.
@@bigisleroller nice!
@@bigisleroller Mahalo for sharing. Awesome catch.
anyone who thinks vegans are weak need to hook up to an awa crazy battle and I like how you handled fish at end gentle wo breach nice iob that fish will be back
I try not to take them out of the water if I'm releasing them.
@@bigisleroller yep most dont know that after long battle like that survival rate isnt great....the no breach release really helps
bra you shoulda hooked up one of those electrical generators on your drag Guaranteed wouldve powered your phone full battery
Monsta
Can teach me
Big boy
Hell yeah roller pigeons is action. I miss having mines .
Epic battle! I honestly think that Awa put out some of the meanest battles. Caught some big mullets back there back in da 80’s.🤙🏾
What’s bait you use unks?? I try hook up sometime but no can gettem
I use the brown limu.
Nice braddah, I've been taking my keikis there, if you mind to ask, what do you regular use for bait? My little one wants to catch one of those after watching your videos 😊 As a matter of fact, we're packing to go there 😅 Big Mahalo
Just need the right limu
I use the brown limu. I have seen some guys catch using bread.
We got some limu today but not sure if it's the right one, honestly. we've tried bread too but not luck. Where do you get your limu from, if you don't mind Mahalo, keep the videos coming
@@lopezohana2702 Usually from the Wailoa pond or down Keaukaha. The Awa have to be feeding to bite. A lot of times I spend hours (4-5) to get one bite.
Thanks for the info 😊, have a wonderful day
Do you put splitshot lead or do you let the limu float around?
No lead.
Aloha braddah, where do you harvest the brown limu around Hilo? Love the videos BTW Mahalo,
Usually got limu in Wailoa pond. If not, try Ice Pond or work your way out towards Leleiwi/Richardson's area.
Yah you feeding the community hes so stoked to grill that fish up cheeeee
Love your aloha spirit brother!
Yessah 🤙🏽
Right on brah 🤙🏼
Killa stuff
What you use for catch dat bradda ??!
someone left a comment about the fish being dangerous to eat ?? Is that just someone trying to be helpful?
Dangerously delicious
R.I.P.
How do you put the brown limu in the hook? Do you tie it to the hook? I didn't know there's giant Awa in that river, amazing. If I knew I'll be fishing in there when I was there 15 years ago. I caught small bangus (Awa)in the Philippines but never that big. Pound for pound the best fighting fish to catch. A lot of my friends in the mainland don't believe me.
You just dip your hook into the buck of limu, no tying. That is why when picking the limu you have to get the strong, good quality limu. I agree with you that the Awa is one of the best fighting fish, especially if they are jumpers. They are strong and are able to make long runs. I've seen a lot of people lose them when they bring them in from the first run and think they got the fish beat and the Awa takes off on their second run.
Mahalo brother 🤙
Bro, There's cyanide in the ground everywhere there. Including the water. That said, I've hooked huge Omilu there. Just don't eat um.
what size hook you use catch these? Do you do the double snell hooks? I fishing for palani in hilo bay alot but my mom loves awa iv never tried fishing that park are the bites slow?
The bite is usually really slow. I use between a #5 to #1 O'doul, double snelled and I use the brown limu for bait.
Nice catch!! I know they get way bigger, we used to try and jump on them when they’d swim under the triple bridge…back in the day after canoe practice… 😅🤙🏾
Spirit of Aloha..Giving your " Catch " away..I grew up in Hilo..Did some fishing in the Canal ( when " Kimiville " was still there..but, most of my fishing was on the " Hilo Breakwater " Spearfishing..and around the island..Puako, Milolii, Kawaihae...My Buddy use to go to Keauhou pier and watch some of the " Local's " come in..They would give him some fish that they caught...🥰🤟

Gotta get the big kakus in there!!!!
You rig it like mullet with swivel?
My set up is the same as a mullet rig, but I don't use swivels.
Great video. You use floater?
Yes
That was a mean fight! What # test u get?
15 lb
Mono or fluoro?
@@landon4155 Fluorocarbon
Do you put the limu with water in the bucket or just the limu for harden?
You need to keep the limu in the water. Don't let it dry out.
@@bigisleroller nice , thank you . What’s the biggest awa you caught yet ?
The way youre dipping the hook brings back memories of me watching my aunty fish wailoa like 30 years ago. 👍👍
Looks like so much fun.
I remember my uncle use to catch them and they have a strong taste probably from the seaweed but we cooked soup and fried and taste was still strong so we tried soaking in vinegar and salt then smoked the taste was way better
Looks like it was a nice one! He still there. Get hime next time.
Screamah
How many fish tacos were you able to make out of that guy!
I have made tacos out of smaller ones. I made Sakuraboshi out of this one.
What u using for bait?
Limu
How you hook the limu and what size hook?
I just dip the hook in the limu bucket. The limu has to be good and strong to stay on the hook. I use #5 to #1 O'doul hooks.
Howzit unko , I just wanted to ask where you get your limu from ?
I usually get it from Wailoa pond.
Mahalos and godbless🤙🏽🤙🏽
Nice. Great job and nice to see your unselfeshness!
Pole Bender 🎣 Love 💙 Da Big Island 🏝 Aloha oi ....

great video
this video is beautiful
Mahalo. For bait, I used limu on a 15 lb leader.
Wow, I grew up in Hilo, never knew Wailoa had Awa. Nice
Seahorses too 👍
and ulua swim up for the mullet
Das limu you using unko?
Yes
Yessah aloha all day
