Micro-commissions: Daisy Williamson
Daisy Williamson’s work Penelope’s Web(b) is inspired by Penelope and the Suitors by John William Waterhouse, as well as prints by Clifford Cyrill Webb.
The final work, which is a beautiful tapestry featuring areas of unweaving, is a nod to both the climate crisis and the unspoken power of Penelope’s story in the hyper-masculine tales of Odysseus. In Greek mythology, Penelope told her suitors she would consider their offers of engagement only after finishing her weaving. Unbeknownst to anyone, Penelope would unweave her work each night to keep her suitors at bay.
Penelope is a name derived from the word ‘duck’ and this led Daisy to learn about the Scottish endangered species Eider ducks. The unweaved section of the ducks in amber thread symbolises not only the Eider duck’s inclusion on the amber list for extinction, but also that we can reverse our effects on species like the Eider and weave their stories back into our landscape.
The thread used in this tapestry was from the last linen mill in Scotland as well as plastic rope the artist collected from beaches.

Micro-commissions: Flying Lion
Переглядів 664 місяці тому
Flying Lion’s work Unisus, Totem of a Change, looks at the Aberdeen city landscape, and how human presence can be a force for good. Disappointed with various examples of the climate crisis being overwhelming and tragic, Flying Lion wanted to make a work as an emblem of hope. Using the Mercat Cross as the setting of the collage, Lion has manipulated images of various recycling and renewable ener...

Artist duo CUSP, made up of artists Phoebe Banks and Jess Wilson-Leigh, developed a screenprint titled Aberdeen Studios, 2024 for their Round 4 Micro-Commission. The screenprint responds to the notion of artist studios. The AAGM collection has works that show artists in plush settings, with grand fireplaces and marble busts. The reality for creative practitioners in Aberdeen city centre today i...

Переглядів 87Рік тому
This shows the delicate operation required to get the masts into position on the partially completed vessel. Completion works took place at Hall, Russell’s during the early months of 1967. Note the workers standing and walking below the structure as it is being lifted!
Inspection of MAUREEN CROAN
Переглядів 130Рік тому
A rather unusual film which shows the completed vessel being ‘visited’ by family and guests of the owners in 1960. The MAUREEN and the MALCOLM CROAN were two trawlers built at Hall, Russell that year for Joe Croan Ltd.

Launch of the Ketch TYGER, and Motor Yacht WALANKA
Переглядів 128Рік тому
Hall, Russell & Co. built very few yachts over the years. This film shows the launch and trials of two vessels in 1963. The first shown is TYGER, built for the then chairman of Hall, Russell’s holding company Myles Wyatt. The WALANKA was built on spec in order to keep the skilled workforce busy due to a lack of orders. Its naming and launch took place at Hall, Russell’s yard, Mrs W. H. Solomon ...
Launch of MV CIENFUEGOS
Переглядів 148Рік тому
This shows the partly completed cargo/passenger vessel being named and launched on 18 August 1959. It was named by Mrs C. Waite and celebrated with the traditional (since 1891) wetting the bow with Champagne. The film goes on to show the tugs manoeuvring the hull into position to allow the ship to be finished at Hall, Russell's. This film is a series of cuts from the longer film made at the lau...

This film was made in 1964 during the first operational voyage of the vessel between Uig on Skye and Tarbert on Harris. Переглядів 2,7 тис.Рік тому
This film made in 1958 shows the ABERDEEN DISTRIBUTOR (built at Hall Russell’s) alongside the quay at Aberdeen. This vessel was one of the first diesel motor trawlers built in Aberdeen and operated by Aberdeen Motor Trawlers. Alongside is one of the older steam-powered trawlers, the WIGAN (A677), being repainted for the last time. The film goes on to show various views of the area around the ha...

Please pronounce his Irish name correctly its NOT Layvery but Lavery ... Lav as in "have." I myself am a LAVERY.
Another Magnum Photographer once told me in a class, that every picture you take is a slight form of aggression. I think that rings true. I also think it depends on your personality how you approach it. Some like Joel Meyerowitz, Bruce Gilden and Martin Parr have the charm to do it in an eloquent way or know how to assess situations. But they also grew up in times when there were less concerns about privacy.
Probably on her way to the Saddle Back in the faros islands.
Fascinating ! Amazing work, Daisy 🙌❤️
Looks like new warps?
One of my favourite pictures and the amount of animals in it is arguable, the cat licking a dropped egg,I love that picture 🏴
Broken Up 15/06/1983 Chittagong,
Tyger was renamed Islander of Polruan, Fowey River being her home port for a while back in the 80's. A beautiful yacht, very handsome lying at her swinging morning. Somehow she ended her days in Shelburne Nova Scotia where she was removed from the water in 2014 by the city authorities as she had been abandoned and was at risk of sinking.
Stylish artist ! captures a graceful period in time .!
Wonderfully poignant.
This is wonderful! Hilma af Klint meets Anni Albers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ♥
Wow! Lovely. Reminds us of this whole series that started in 2012, For example: ua-cam.com/video/mZtTghRrGbU/v-deo.html and this ua-cam.com/video/mZtTghRrGbU/v-deo.html
Arthur Coates is doing a great musical job in spreading the wonderful Quebecois traditional fiddle music. I look forward to hearing more and supporting this talented musician and learning more tunes from him.
Provides an excellent and original insight into Eardley’s work. I have loved her paintings for 40 years, and I have loved Proust for about the of time, but never before have I seen them connected so cogently and with such deeply informed grace. And both come from (in part) a connection to Ruskin, whose reputation has been totally ruined in recent years (see the film “Effie Gray.”) The reality may have been more nuanced. Either way, it is interesting that neither Ruskin’s sexuality nor more importantly Joan’s, merit a mention in this talk, or in so many other discussions of her work. I think it may have had a profound influence on her choice of subject matter. In any event, I thank Griffin Coe for his wonderful talk, and I hope to hear more from him in future.
An enjoyable and enlightening talk. Thank you.
So interesting Fiona. Thnx.
Lovely conversation Fiona and Ruth. Very relaxed. Feel as though I was there with you. Thnx.
Try film maker Rob Aitken. He is also a musician, a piper.
Open Road look so exciting! Deveron Arts is, of course, a stalwart. Hurrah for Jim Ewan at The Anatomy Rooms. The will be new Aberdeenshire Network worker in post soon, if not already...look out for that! Look Again Aberdeen also working on network creation. I'll speak to you about it.
This is such a fascinating story, so well told. It’s hard to believe how far diabetes care has come in just 100 years.
Any questions?
An informative and enjoyable talk from an engaging and clearly knowledgeable speaker.
As someone who looks at paintings and views them at face value, listening to this talk made me really think about where painters come from, were educated and taught, how they put things together and the emotions that come with this talent, that at times, jump out at the viewer! Thank you for this insight and I look forward to more of your talks.
Excellent talk on Joan Eardley with fascinating references to her contemporaries. Full of insight and a wealth of knowledge by Griffin Coe. Will recommend and look forward to future talks by this curator.
I thought this talk was well put together, very informative, and with the Ruskin/Proust connection very insightful. I suppose my only "criticism" is that there aren't enough pictures of her work, especially her paintings, but I suspect that they are limited by the number of works in your collection. It is refreshing to listen to something with more academic depth than the usual fluff.
Wonderful, especially for those who can’t afford the latest technology
Lovely performance!
