Rory Carroll - Killing Thatcher, the IRA’s Brighton Bombing and the war against The Crown
On the 40th anniversary of the bombing of The Grand Hotel in Brighton, Rory Carroll, author and Ireland correspondent for the Guardian, discusses his international bestselling book, Killing Thatcher with fellow journalist and author, Ronan McGreevy.
The plot to assassinate British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, was an audacious attack on the British government and a turning point in the IRA’s long campaign of war against The Crown. The passage of time can make caricatures of main players in political events, but Rory’s meticulous research investigating the lead up to and impact of the bombing, sheds new light on the people involved and the historic context of their actions.
There are lessons still to be learned from The Troubles. Carroll’s book is a timely warning against rash political reactions when a measured response could ultimately lead towards the peaceful settlement of political differences, benefiting all sides involved.

Pat has a smile that can light up a room. I was at his show “Silent “ last night in Kilkenny. Saw it in Carlow a few years ago also. My daughter came with me last night. She has mental health issues. She felt it was wonderful to see this referenced and explored in this play. I wanted to go up to him after the play and tell him I loved him! I didn’t because I thought he’d think I was coming onto him ( which I wouldn’t do to anyone). I met Pat in my youth at a drama course in Gormanstown and he’s as kind and as inspiring as ever.

Dear God, How little you both know. Dev did not go to the Legation, he went to his private residence in Monkstown. The only purpose of his visit was to thank him for his essential correct behaviour . Also Dev insisted that the new German representative NOT be a member of the Nazi party. This was agreed with Germany. He did not sign any book of condolences . This book was sold at a Belfast Auction house in the mid 1950's. I think we might would have seen his signature by now.

@@hearnaw The Thatcher government didn't close as many mines, for obvious reasons to those who think & use their brains. The Thatcher government shut productive mines, not just unproductive mines, they also destroyed whole manufacturing industries & communities in the UK that never recovered & were turned into wastelands of hopeless for decades. Not forgetting that her government was importing low quality high sulphur coal from a so called workers state Poland, what a shower of charlatans. Her government successfully turned this island into a low wage low skilled economy built on ever rising house prices & access to debt. Her government & business pals killed off proper craft apprenticeships & then gave the excuse to Blair & co to deluge Britain with cheap East European labour that drove down wages & has decimated the native youth from a having access to proper craft apprenticeships. Virtually the only people that back this constant deluge of foreign migration for skilled manual work are the very people who don't do that type of work. A short sighted selfish mindset & for sure they'd have none of their offspring working in manual skilled work. For working class native Britons who lived through that awful era, we have lived with the damage it has done to the working class bonds & the soul of society, it was & is criminal. The money that has left the UK the last 20 years from foreigner labour, East European labour is insane, all because businesses wanted cheap labour rather than invest & train our own as was done for centuries. Those billions & billions would have been spent in UK communities, instead they funded EE coffers, a piggin disgrace & the soulless society it has created. Thatcher only did the corporate elites bidding, she was brazen enough but no more than their stooge. 🎈🎈🎈"s the lot of you.

It is ludicrous to think that the civil war started with the shelling on 28th June 1922 - it simmered from January 1922 with actions in Beleek Mullingar Limerick etc. the trouble in the north was horrific but has been left out of the "official" war of independence and civil war as strictly defined

Some soldier had already written a date on the sleeve: 27/10/ 1964. The sodier has signed his name on it as Cpl P P.... I have deliberately put in only the fist letter of his sutname. So it looks the LP was recorded some time before the date mentioned. There are some lovely tunes on the LP. like The wearing of the green The last rose of summer Believe me Garryowen The minstrel boy The green hills of Tyrol

Everything you "know" about the period is debatable, don't mind destroyers there were bombers assembled at Chester to bomb the four courts, the artillery was organized by Colin McVean Gubbins an SS man later head of SOE in WW2. Dalton was almost certainly a British Agent and the army believed he was the assassin. The six months Jan to June 1922 were underestimated in terms of the violence not just in the north. Collins death was never an accident there had been six attempts earlier.

Excellent discussion , does Paddy have any books on this narrative - and can i pose a question ? - As it has emerged that the British had infiltrated the IRA in the north during the troubles with an extensive number of IRA informers on the payroll - most notably Scapeticci /Agent Steaknife at the highest level - so that they could manipulate and pull the strings -even of the security / army council level of the Provisional movement - right alongside Mc Guinness including treasurers of Sinn Fein - and even had senior agents killed off if ever there was risk rereleasing this fact - is it not logical to ask how far back in Irish affairs did the British operate spies in the senior Irish political system - especially during the initial foundation of the state - and is it not inevitable they controlled ifor when should Collins live or die ?
