Art installation or accident?
Stumbled upon this rectangle of light on the Cornell Arts Quad. Is it an art installation, or just an accidental window left open with projector running?

Jonathan Ochshorn - Combustible foamed plastic display stands
Переглядів 110Рік тому
I noticed the other day that foamed plastic display stands were being stored under the exit stair in the Crit Room of Milstein Hall at Cornell University. Having so much combustible material in a room and - in particular - directly under an exit stair, seemed like a bad idea. The building code says that an enclosed storage area under an interior stair must have 1-hour fire-resistive constructio...

I'm continually amazed by the kinds of architectural photography available through Google's street view. This video of the Piazzetta San Marco in Venice was made by using the screen recording (command-5) feature on my Mac. The recording itself contains the required attribution.
Concrete construction: The Ithacan (video by Jonathan Ochshorn)

I shot and edited this video on April 13, 2022. The Ithacan is a 10-story residential apartment building currently under construction on Green Street in Ithaca, NY. The video shows some aspects of its reinforced concrete site-cast construction. For more information about the project, see: Brian Crandall, "Gallery: See some of the latest projects underway in Ithaca," October 18, 2021, ithacavoic...
How Cornell does fire safety: Fine Arts Library exit
Переглядів 772 роки тому
How Cornell does fire safety: 1. OMA-designed architecture studios put required exit and bathrooms in adjacent library. 2. But library is open when studios are closed, or vice versa, creating "security" issues. 3. Problem solved: forbid entry through the fire exit!

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:22 *Milstein Hall's superstructure has a large floor plate with cantilevers in two directions, supported by trusses and girders.* 01:57 *The challenge of resisting lateral forces without shear walls is addressed by creating rigid connections at column-truss intersections.* 03:03 *Construction involves lifting truss segments with a 650-ton hydraulic crane and careful coordination to fit cantilever sections into place.* 05:06 *Cantilever trusses, extending beyond the main structure, present unique challenges during construction.* 07:11 *The second floor features a diagonal seating area and skylight openings, with meticulous on-site welding for joint connections.* 08:06 *The construction concludes with a free-standing steel stair structure on the west side of Milstein Hall.* Made with HARPA AI
Impressive AI transcription, but I believe that effective and productive learning benefits from actual viewing of the video by a human. When you take notes yourself, rather than by relying on some AI summary, the information has a better chance of getting into your brain - rather than into the brain of the AI software.
Would you consider setting and price and receiving measurements for 3 window acs ( older female) ? I just don’t have the materials and tools and just wondering? Ann
Sorry, can't do it.
oh yeah
Thanks for your video. Finally, someone's video that really defines it.
10:20 Professor jabbing at the designers over that CO lol
Home Depot doesn't understand "kind of a stick-on foam." What's the brand name or generic term for that grey border material on the wall side edge of your insulating box???
These were all very insightfull and very simple to comprehend! Thanks alot from an architecture student from Portugal!
I'm just learning and following ur work. Ur a legend ! You are so insightful and truth seeking. I like the honesty and academic rigor. Not the greenwash we often hear
Great vids. And I appreciate .. the detailed look u present.. ie u don't say here is the installation of the curtain wall. U break it down into each necessary element. Are there drawing and details available? I hear alot of issues with the building post contraction
Cornell has drawings and details but rarely releases them, even to students. I have more information about the building here: jonochshorn.com/scholarship/writings/milstein-critique/
@@impatientsearch thanks.
Thank you fo this. I installed the hardware cloth on our pond dock which has had wasp issues for years.
Why? How?
I'm not sure. Cover plates are often designed to snap into place, but these may not have been detailed in that way, nor do they seem to have been screwed in place.
Can you name the insulating materials please. I live in another part of world where diy is not an everyday activity.
I used extruded polystyrene insulation ("Styrofoam").
This seems like a very fascinating class.
This is such a well explained series.. 👍🏼
Great video! Interesting twist from 2020, right now wood is more expensive than just buying the steel scaffolding!!!!
A very practical idea! But I think you should hire someone to do an impressionistic painting of your air conditioner as the picture in your frame.
What program for the drawings
The drawings are done in Photoshop; the animation uses a few photoshop drawings with a free downloaded gif-animation app.
Wow. Very educational. Thank you.
This is unacceptable. Thank you for your observations and comments. First Milstein Hall and now this. Such disappointment.
I'm in an architecture class currently through the American Uni of Paris but I was sent home because of covid but I'm so glad I got to see some of the buildings I'm studying that I never got to visit this year!
Any update on this? Have you had to replace the mesh? If so, how often? Love to see a follow up video. Also, did you have spacers in your deck? We have a huge composite deck and are having a hard time getting the hardware cloth around the spacers
Jesus, why are you so mad, seriously? It's hilarious
I made three of these to cover my A/C units. Thank you. Excellent design.
Great video Jonathan!!! I really appreciated the time you took to explain everything as well as the interesting anecdotes. It is really hard to understand how these curtain walls are assembled and the sealed. I think your video could be improved by doing the assembly sequence in 3D instead --- yes...I know how much work that would involve. Thanks again!!!
I love this design of the 2x6 sandwiched like that
Did you build it on 2x6 or 2x8? Thanks
Recycled 2x6 boards for the main structure (with 2x10 boards for the walking surface)
would be faster and cheaper and safer to buy a second hand scaffold tower. easier to dismantle and store for future use
The base of the pre-fab sections on the base, what did you use screws or nails? I am new and have been told to use nails for load bearing portions. Screws for joining nails for load bearing, or do I need to get into making joints?
In general, nails have greater shear strength than ordinary screws, and so would be a better choice. However, I just used ordinary 3-inch deck screws, but used perhaps four at each joint to increase the total shear resistance. Since the live load (just me) wasn't that great, it proved to be sufficient. Probably best to use the new "structural" or "construction" screws, which combine ease of installation (and demolition) with high shear strength. See, for example: www.familyhandyman.com/tools/structural-screws-vs-lag-screws/
This building looks exactly like the one where my dentist has his office.
Very cool buddy, I will post again, once I have built my own, even if I have broken something, lol.
YOU ONE SMART MAN....very good ,
Wish I had those electric scissors for all the standing raised beds I made and other projects! Sure beats metal shears!
This is awesome.
It's unusual that no one has come on here and lectured Mr Ochshorn about the dangers of DIY staging.
I always enjoy seeing hardworking people doing DIY stuff - Great job Johnathan!
loved your vlog! felt very natural
I had been thinking about how to cover my ugly AC in the middle of a otherwise useful wall and I was lucky enough to find your video. Just the idea I had in mind. Thank you for sharing such a great solution!!!
Thanks a lot
Thanks a lot sir for the documentary, as a young architect it helps me a lot, thanks very much again for your effort
*immediately submits application*
yaaay! Great help
That's just disgusting! Thank you for shooting all that details! Every starchitecht creation should have it's own documentary of this kind.
Thank you. Mr. Koolhass needs some building science.
Flufftastic!
Would be ALOT easier to make some A frames.
@r4zv4nes the guards are required by ADA code (disabilities) specifically in this instance for the blind, who would indeed bump their head on sloped walls. Their sticks hit vertical walls, allowing them to not bump their head, therefore no guards required.
is it still working? :D
+TheXPGamers Yes, still working; the hardware cloth remains embedded in the joints between the decking, so that wasps cannot enter the space below.
@@impatientsearch Will heavy rain push the cloth down?
@@breezy_basil No, the rain does not push the hardware cloth down because the "cloth" is really a metal mesh and the cut ends of the mesh wires become embedded in the adjacent deck panels due to their curvature.
@@impatientsearch fantastic!
Are there downloads for the 3d models shown in the video? I wanted to modify it in sketchup.
+Coleton33Music They aren't "models"; just Photoshop images animated within the video editing process.
