I have a westinghouse igen4500dfc using propane to a big tank. From the big tank the gas company ran a line to where my bbq is with a quick disconnect on a regulator and the bbq has been working fine this way. This connection spot was also for my generator. So I have that gray hose like you and ran it like how my bbq line is. So I went direct with the gray hose from the quick disconnect where the regulator is, to the generator direct. When i turned on the propane all I could smell was gas at the generator and it was tight. So I disconnected it from generator and put the regulator that came with the generator like you did and it worked. I'm basically saying I did the same thing as you did and it worked, but did you get the gas smell when you hooked in direct and it didn't work? I think the problem is it just dumps the gas in and definetly needs the second regulator that comes with it no matter how you hook it up. Good video it made me feel like it wasn't just me.
@@SlaysTheDay I didn’t notice the gas smell hooking it direct, but maybe I missed it. Glad we both figured it out!
We just installed a 330 Gallon tank to run our Champion generator and the installer just ran a line directly to a shutoff valve box that has a connector for the standard generator regulator/hose combo. From my understanding, the flow rate will be different for different types of devices. We live totally off-grid so we use our generator to charge up the batteries after 3 or 4 days of snow/rain. We'll use about 3 to 4 gallons of propane for a 4 to 6 hour run time typically.
@@alvalonline thanks for sharing. I agree. It’s a little trial and error with these. But it’s nice when you get it right and everything works!
Like some have said, put the regulators (they're not valves) at the generator end of the hose.
@@5thGenNativeTexan the fittings are not designed to connect that way. The purpose of the video was to show that if you use the provided hose with the two regulators back to back. It works. Even if connected close to the tank. Not all grill type hoses and regulators are the same.
Do not put the gen in the garage. My friend and his whole family lost their lives from CO spreading thru a house larger than yours with the garage door open
@@blainecelestaine4543 so sorry to hear that. The garage I’m running it in isn’t connected to the house. It’s about 50 feet away. Glad you brought that up though. Generators can be dangerous if not handled properly.
Way way way way over design don't need all that junk Just turn the propane tank valve a crack until it starts and runs as normal
@@bryan-q9h that may work if I would go out to the tank every time I wanted to start it. But long term, it has remote start and I want my wife to easily be able to run it. Also, I run our furnace off the tank as well so the valve has to be open all the time.
They are not valves they are pressure regulators
I agree. I misspoke.
Maybe there was just air in the line.. just a guess
@@michaelhartmann9971 nope. It’s something about the type of hose/valve. I bled the line until I had strong gas smell for a while, still wouldn’t start unless I used the line that came with the generator.
Glad I found this video. I bought the westinghouse wgen145000tfc. I have geothermal and needed a bigger generator to run it. I plan on getting a 500 gallon propane tank and probably would have run into the same issue you did.
0:26 - "We normally heat with coal." Wow, really? I've never heard of anyone heating their house with coal. Where do you eve buy coal?
@@dontbanmebrodontbanme5403 there are multiple places near us that sell coal bags and coal in bulk. One place sells wood/coal stoves. I burn what they call “hard coal” and I had to make a small modification to my wood burner stove grate to burn it. Much less work than wood, and burns much cleaner. No creosote build up.
We heated with coal till about 1970 on the farm.
Why are you powering the tank with the generator?
@@Beechnut985 I’m using the propane tank to fuel my generator instead of gas in case of a power outage. ua-cam.com/video/tJRsoZjuGtE/v-deo.htmlsi=-DXK9KhS4xZlq_9a
You mean, why is he powering the generator with the tank. And the answer to your question is obvious: * no need to rush to the gas station to get gas * no need to constantly set a timer to go fill it up with more fuel (and, let's be honest, spilling some of that fuel) * no need to shut down the generator to refuel (you do shut down the generator like you're supposed to each time you refill the generator with gas, right?) With that said, it's nice to have both options because if a power outage is long enough, you might exhaust all of the fuel in the propane tank. Normally, you could just call for another delivery, but for a very long outage, that might indicate the roads are not passable. You'll also have thousands of other customers also wanting propane. 500 gallon propane tank + 50 gallons of gas before a storm + conservative use of your generator = you should be able to get through a month of no power.
The red regulator reduces the tank pressure to a high pressure needed to overcome the resistance of the long hose. The silver regulator reduces the pressure to what the generator needs. Try putting the silver regulator close to the generator.
First thing to do, check for good flow at end of hose. Reg's don't open sometimes, bugs get in hoses.
I know that it takes a long time to get the air out. Better to have the regulator close to the generator not the tank. I have z mister heater Lp heater and have to hold the valve for while till the air gets out and the gas gets there. Also don't shut off at tank but at Generator or heater if wanting to get going again soon.
@@boydruth9767 surprisingly, my generator fires up after 2 attempts.
If you have a tank like his, yeah, that could be a great idea for off grid. However, to my experience, a more dense fuel is actually better. For example, diesel fuel contains a lot more energy than propane In a generator this can be very valuable. I have had the chance to burn different fuels from natural gas to diesel and I'll be honest.Diesel is the least fuel burning generator I have experienced, don't even ask me about natural gas! That was a mistake! I'll never do that again!
By the way, the dual regulator is actually far better than the single regulator the reason why is because it has what's called an expansion valve with a pressure control valve sometimes liquid can come down the line and that will really mess things up. So that expansion valve makes sure that everything goes from a liquid state to a gas state before it goes through the pressure regulator just a heads up on that.
@@iansexpiramentaion5286 thanks for that information!
Fascinating. Propane as a fuel source for off grid is a great idea. Have you thought about solar and battery storage? Then no need for a propane delivery.
Yeh, not sold on the whole deal. Solar panels to my knowledge don't last forever as well as the batteries. Not sure how I feel about creating more landfill products or the idea of trying to recycle them after their lifecycle.
@therustichandyman Fair enough but the generator will break as well. I suppose it's what you feel more comfortable repairing or replacing.
@@BioHazardCL4 If you live in the northern part of the US, there will be periods of the year (let's say from November til April) where you can exhaust the amount of energy solar puts out. So, for example, let's say you have 20kWh worth of battery storage and 15kW worth of solar panels. A 3 day outage might exhaust what you have stored + what the sun was able to generate. I looked into solar + batteries and everyone in the north east told me they had to add a generator to their setup to charge the batteries when they lost power in the winter.
I just got the same exact flex. Pipe down on a 2006, Toyota Sienna, and he did 2 feet both waves from the flex pipe because it was rusted out a 125 bucks brand new and welded at a shop.

18 buckets at my HD price of $22-$25 is still hefty. I’m not sold on lasting 5 years, but you should consider their upper product at $34 rated at 10 years. My thinking is that for 50% more, getting 50-100% more life would saving you plenty on your labor. On roofing, the difference between standard 25 year and artisan 50 year shingle is like $10 per pack. For less than $1,000, if installed and prepped properly, you can theoretically have a roof that last 2x as long as long, saving big $ on labor and hassle to install. Same with sealant that is rated for 2x life.

A daunting task. You did an awesome job. I have to do the same on a 6.0 for different reasons. The idea of using the crank to jack the motor up a couple of inches has been bothering me but apparently the crank is as strong as I think it is. You made it seem like a great idea. On the seized bolts, I used a Fein oscillating tool with a carbide blade to vibrate/cut bolt heads off in tight areas. I don't have a torch so I made that work. Thanks young man.
