It's the polar opposite for me. My mum is incredibly toxic, manipulative and abusive towards me. About a year ago she invited me to her 80th birthday, which was to be held with family in another state around Christmas. I politely declined as I am poor, struggle to pay for rent, bills and food let alone save money, and didn't want to be a financial burden on other family members to cover all my expenses. My mum called me a "selfish and ungrateful son who didn't love her, didn't care for her, didn't want to see her and didn't want to attend his dear poor old mother's birthday. I now know where you stand." I have not spoken to her since. I have recently found out from my elder brothers and sisters that she's regularly in and out of hospital due to her declining health. I have no intention of contacting her. After dealing with 40 years of emotional, mental and physical trauma from her abuse, I look forward to the day she dies knowing she has lost a son.
