Minn Kota Heading Sensor Catches Fish!
After more than 3 years, I decided to add the Minn Kota Heading Sensor to my Old Town AutoPilot 136 and immediately catch fish. In this video I show how I installed the Minn Kota Heading Sensor to my Old Town AutoPilot 136. You can use the same process for an Old Town AutoPilot 120, or any kayak with I-Pilot for that matter. Watch until the end and you will see how the Minn Kota Heading Sensor actually works on the water and I immediately catch a giant small mouth bass.

Cashed a check at Lake Osoyoos Kayak Bass Tournament!
Переглядів 2282 місяці тому
I participated in the Kayak Fishing Northwest/Washington Kayak Bass Fishing tournament held at Lake Osoyoos in Oroville, WA. This was the last West Coast Championship qualifier for WKBF. I had a strong game plan based on my 2 days of pre-fishing (ua-cam.com/video/mGVXhlh8m8Y/v-deo.htmlsi=hDgcLTCArYpR65Ji). The challenge would be who would be first to the locations. There were 33 anglers in the ...

Fishing in an OldTown AutoPilot 136 and sitting on spotlock. only fish caught for the day before the winds and waves blew me off the water. My RightOn RuffSport kayak trailer with box rack. This setup allows me to wet launch and load. I use a bungee to launch and a rope to load. The 3” x 10’ pvc pipe allows the OldTown Autopilot 136 to slide on/off almost effortlessly. In the video you can see where/how I mounted the pipe using basic u-bolts. This trailer has made many long trips, including 10 hours each way to the California Delta...

Thanks Greg! Great instructional!
Wow sir thanks for sharing your awesome day on the lake the bite was on, the lake was beautiful and got yourself into 3rd position in the tournament! It seems the unbearable heat affecting these action cameras is going to a constant problem unless they design something to work in these temperatures! Tight lines take care and God bless!
Glad you enjoyed it
i always struggle with big body of water specially when its new , and some of those spots were so juicy , grat vid bud
hey, we need CC for those of us without speakers. lol

You king really smooth in that cowboy hat it suits you perfect tight lines take care and God bless.
@@granvillej3316 thanks for the comment and compliments on the hat😄. I’ll have the video of tournament day up soon. God Bless!
i wish i knew now what I didn'tknow then... It took 3 years and 75 days on the water but I now know what the "clunk' noise comes from. The steering ball assembly with the upper collar half, is tichtly clamped around the shaft with 2 bolt/nuts, which bring the 2 halves together, and hold the upper collar half tight against the shaft. The orientation of the upper collar half needs to complement the lower collar half (the two orange arrows need to be aligned when the ball assembly upper collar is assembled and tightened) which is fixed into the lower white motor unit, which has the gears that turn the shaft. When you draw the motor down into position with the paracord pully, the two collar halves need to fit together "clunk" perfectly. The upper collar half needs to be drawn down all ther way to completely complement/marry to the lower collar half. The paracord needs to be completely tight in the cleat so the two collar halves are perfectly fitted together to form a flush connected collar. The spot lock shaft movement torgues on this connection constantly, so if the ball assembly is even slighly loose, or sitting 1/16 of an inch too proud, it will eventually become malalligned and cause the steering to fail and hence need to be manually rotated until it "clunks" into alignment. The plastic collar halves will become worn and their perfect complementary connection becomes less and less reliable. Replacing the entire steering ball assembly then becomes necessary. This is not difficult but necessary. The plastic design of the two collar halves makes the assembly salt water resistant but prone to wearing down with prolonged use of spot lock. The steering ball assembly is $30 bucks mailed to you from Old Town. I still love this kayak.
Nice Fish!
Thanks!
Nice!
Thanks!
Nice work, way to get em!
Thanks!
I gota stop fooling around and get my line wet! Nice job!
You ended up kicking my butt. Good Day!
Gregg you my friend are tremendous. What a help! Exact issue I have presetly and boy did you save me time and money! Big money! I need to get a new shim, but I am sure Old Town can mail one to for a few bucks. Saves me shipping the motor! Thank god I found you video THANKs for making AND posting!
Glad to help
How wide is your pvc
The centers of the PVC are 9 1/2 inches apart.
Do you got take motor off to load kayak and lower the fish finder
The motor does have to come off before loading onto the trailer. I would take it off for transport anyway. If the top cross bar was about 4” higher it would not have to and I’ve considered making that modification. I have made more changes since this video was created. You can see those in my Upgrade video. I am thinking about redoing this video for 2024. Thank you for watching!
Good work on the Kayak Gregg!
Where did you get the covers for the rod tubes?

I’m really thinking hard on a Sasquatch Bar. Have you used it yet and if so how the 73sv from that distance? I’ll check it out when we finally meet up.
Not yet. Hoping to get a shakedown run in soon and will capture it on camera. I will say, as I was waiting for the 106 to update, one thought I had. As a Columbia River fisherman, there is a lot of weeds. I can foresee the bar and graphs inhibiting raising the motor to remove the weeds. I have the Ninja but the weeds can still get wrapped. I’ll probably be appreciative that I went with the YakAttack LockNLLoad system rather than hard mounting the head units.
@@FishingAv8r let me know when you’re heading out. Maybe I can join you. Jim Smith
Looks good Gregg. Some key mods and I appreciate you talking about the Sasquatch bar since I’ll be adding that this year.
Also got some videos doing my build. I’d second the last comment. Last kayak I went with some cheaper connectors for my xi3 and melted them the first trip. Replaced them with connectors from Scheels and had no problems after that.
Rethinking now….
Thanks for the video. Just a tip - I've used those blue battery quick connectors before and had 2 failures. They cant handle large loads for a long time. If you motor at full speed for more than 15 mins they melt. I had to replace my battery because these tripped the BMS and it didn't recover. Luckily Dakota replaced the battery under warranty. You should replace them with an more robust option to avoid this being an issue with you.
Thanks for the info!
Hey Greg. Great video! Was going to use 3.5 inch hd pool noodles and 4" duct tape over crossbars. Then a guy in a group I'm in shared your link. I will be carrying 1-3 yaks. Not sure I'd wet launch as there isn't much of a need around here but wouldn't be a bad set up option. So, i was thinking, I could put 4 pvc on top crossbar and adjust/remove as needed. What are your thoughts for the top? PVC or wrapped noodle? We are getting our first yaks this spring so I am as green as the grass. Thanks for the video! Happy New Year!
Also - Sch 40 DWV ($21.78) or the Sch 40 Solid Core ($29.99)? Thanks!
Depends on if you are looking for parallel or perpendicular on the top of the box frame. Perpendicular, noodles for cushioning is fine. For parallel support, use PVC as I have on the bottom. Also. make sure the kayaks you buys are within the weight limits of the top of the frame.
@@tommyrehbein5306 Depends on the weight of your load. For the few buck difference, worth it to buy the solid core for piece of mind.
@@FishingAv8r Weight cap for top is #300 and combined yaks are about #170-200. Should e good to go. Thank you for your replies. Very much appreciated. 😀
Would you happen to know the number size of the Thule box. Great idea!
Not sure of your question. Its a Thule Frontier. I can put rods as long as 7'3" in it.
@@FishingAv8r sorry I meant series number but I think I found something close. Thanks! Love the setup
What kind of main battery do you have?
For my motor I run a Renogy 100aH. It has BMS and an App so I can monitor it on my phone and not worry about it failing due to temps. Nov 2022 it sat outside overnight in sub-20degrees and worked perfect the next morning and every time since. I can usually get 2 full days of hard running out of it.
What did you use to mount that winch eye in the front of your boat?
Standard marine u-bolt and silicone. a.co/d/1Ud4Fx3
Do you have the nine inch extension on your summit pole or the six inch one? Also being right handed do you feel your graph is better on the left side?
Honestly do not remember length. I had the graph on my right on my Native. I much prefer it on my left as i typical net on my right. While this setup worked great, I will be making changes this winter, adding a 2nd graph and putting them both across the middle. Working an a design now. As soon as Black Friday sales start, I getting a Garmin 106sv. I'll do a video of the new setup once done.
Nice one! Do you find Livescope helpful? I have kicked around getting Livescope but I am not sure I want to have an external transducer arm or deal with the extra wiring. I catch plenty without it so I am not sure it would really change my catch rate. I would love to hear your thoughts.
I’m still learning it. It is cool to see your lure and the fish take it as you feel the pull. I’m moving and changing my setup over the winter. I’m adding a 2nd screen to see Livescope/Side and Down scan/Chart as needed. Overall I’m a fan of Livescope
Very nice smallie!!!
Nice catch !
What are the height dimensions on the rack?
31 3/8” from bottom of rack to top

Glad to help. I just took it from Portland to The Delta. 10 hours each way. Towed beautifully.
Don't add locktight to nylon/plastic anything... the locktight will eat plastic. :)
