I carry two of these in my motorcycle camping kitchen. The big diameter burner gives more even heat for real cooking.

I think the biggest problem I have with any of these fero rod/magnesium type of firestarters, is that if you are prepping to take all of this stuff with you, just take a storm lighter/jet lighter, and it will light anything in pretty much any weather conditions.it’s not as though a ferro rod is traditional like a Flint and steel - it is a very modern man-made item. So just use a gas lighter.

Bayite is my favored brand of ferro rod. Get the pressure right using the bayite scraper and youve got fire. Another good brand is EricX Lights. Try a 6"x.5" bayite

That axe is in no way a splitter. Yes, it could probably split some soft dry rounds, but it'll get stuck quickly and the head will wiggle loose when you try to finagle it out.

Seemed to work great on these rounds. Fresh cut rounds, wet wood. No It would not work so great, you are right. I have a STIHL splitter axe for the tough jobs. Also a splitting maul.

My favorite species for harvesting fatwood is Douglas fir, it looks like you had a nice find there. Referencing the 3:00 minute mark, you might try another stick as a "keeper" to hold wood in place when you are splitting pieces off with an axe. The weight of the axe head and grain of the wood can allow the axe to go further than anticipated, leaving the axe bearer with a nasty wound. On the 2nd season of Alone, one of the candidates (Mary Kate) had an accident while similarly splitting wood with an axe that left her with permanent damage to the hand. Thanks for the good content.

lol i got two also from ebay ..i coudlnt ignite the so called magnesium shavings with a bic lighter! also the scrapers where smooth rounded on all edges and you would have more luck shaving with a plastic knife. the fire steel barely put out a spark even using a tungston steel knife sharpening edge. the ones i got where square shaped. at least yours look like they are actually magnesium!
