Sunday Bagels
No sailing this week so I cook homemade NYC style bagels on a sleepy Sunday in a mid century modern house. Everything - Plain - Poppy.
This recipe has been producing some great results. These bagels are better than any I have personally eaten in the Washington DC area, and I think they go toe to toe with any New York City shop.

In this video I sail my 1981 Cape Dory 28 on the remnants of low pressure system Debby from Deale to Shady Side to check out the capsized wreckage of "Lovebug" - a 122' motor yacht built by Sanlorenzo in Italy at their Viareggio shipyard in 2010 that originally chartered at $125k/week. While the boat received a full refit in 2021, it began taking on water in the Chesapeake Bay in early August a...

I take you along for the ride as I cross the Chesapeake Bay on my 1981 Cape Dory 28 to tour scenic Tilghman Island on my road bike (on the 4th of July, 2024). The America trifecta! Great wind, a sun that defied forecast, and peaceful 4k footage of Tilghman Island - one of my favorite spots in the Eastern Shore.

Ultra satisfying jobs on my 1981 Cape Dory 28 sailboat. A lot of teak on this boat and I like to keep it natural which means one big scrub, brightening, and re-oil per year. I also applied new Kiwigrip non-skid to the top deck surface with some spectacular results. And bonus - the bilge mystery is finally solved

I single hand my 41 foot Morgan which is about 25k pounds. How? I go slow and try not to get around anyone. 😂
Great video. Also nice to see another view of Herrington harbor, where I solo sail my sailboat.
KevBob - One question - I see you don't have jib sheet winches by the tiller but rather up on the cabin (like my Precision 23). Do you find that the autopilot eliminates the need to have them close to the tiller because you can jump up and work the sheets and not worry about the tiller? I was looking to install a second set of winches further back in the cockpit (like so many other small boats) but would prefer not to do that and just find a way to work them in their current position (left and right of the companion way). Thanks!
Thoroughly enjoyed this video as I'm new to sailing and want to be out on the water as frequently as I can and just find it easier to go single handed. One question - do you unhook the tether and attach it to other points on the boat if you need to go to the bow? If so did you add dedicated hooks or just work with what is there? Also really appreciated the expert narration while getting back into the slip. When I first started sailing (last month!) I spent hours and hours working on maneuvering under power and it has paid huge dividends already. I followed a book by NauticEd on the topic and did the exercises and worked the concepts presented which is great because it pushes you to explore all options for controlling the boat under power under all conditions and wind directions. Many thanks, KevBob! Sailing from Washington Sailing Marina in Alexandria VA.
Excellent video. Thanks
Good tips. nice docking . Lots of practise and knowing your boat is key .
hi are you in Annapolis area?
You got a hell of a Baritone!!!
Dude, you are my hero for showing that whisker pole sequence. Fair Winds!
Thanks for sharing. This old dog is trying to learn how to single-hand a 10K lb boat with a tiller and full keel. Much appreciated & hello from the VA side of the Potomac.
I can single hand sail a 44 ft boat. So what?
I’m a new subscriber! Excellent video! I have a Cape Dory Typhoon! Love Cape Dories.
Just got a 27 Ericson learning to sail FELLS POINT BMORE. Great video inspiring.
Excellent video, good advice.
Hey there! Thanks for posting these videos! Really enjoy watching your adventures on the bay. I am thinking of sailing for an overnight at Lowe’s Wharf Marina, but I’ve been concerned with water depth over there. Do you think I would have any issues? I have a 30 foot hunter.
In one of my other videos I went to that bar via the back creek dock. I asked them if its possible to anchor out on the Chesapeake channel side and they basically said you cant do it unless you anchor far out and dinghy in
Got it, thanks! Just to be sure was that the dock along Sherwood Landing Rd? I am wondering if I can tie up overnight there.
@@andrewjphillips19 Yup, I anchored near that dock and dinghied in. Im not sure on the depth close to the dock but IIRC there was a Nonsuch 30 tied up there which should have a similar draft. I am not sure you can stay overnight tied up
Just a tip, when you come into the channels do the reverse of what you do when coming out. have the sails ready to go up again just in case your motor fails. You then have the ability to sail back out if needed.
Good stuff! Something you could do when docking is having the motor on forward gear after you have the stern line in place. That would push the boat towards the dock and remove the urgency of getting hold of the bow line. Can use the same trick when leaving the dock as well, meaning you can let go of the bow line first and avoid running.
Midship line!!!
This was beautiful man! Love those strings coming in 1/2 way through
Hi, what boat is this? Nice boat
@@OoiBeng-o5z 1981 Cape Dory 28
How long did it take to get to Annapolis? Id assume about 4hrs straight line but since you tacked was it twice as long?
Awesome stuff man! I have my Hunter 26.5 in the marina you see at left just before you are entering HHN. I'm a Novice and just single handed first time on Sunday. But more to learn! Getting back into slip is tough so I need more practice.
Hm, interesting how you started cutting in the middle of taking the main down.
You are wise to do your cruising while you are young. After retiring I sold everything and moved across the country. Two boats I had under contract didn’t work out. The saga is not worth telling. The plan of living and cruising is now down to doing 3-4 day coastal cruises at a time when possible. Enjoy every minute.
Hi! Great video. Just two notes. Install life lines from the heck to the bow of your boat. You don't want to go forward and deal with the sails in rough conditions without being clipped to the lines. Second your lanyard seems to be to long. It is always a tricky decision between not too long and not too short. If the lanyard is too long and you will fall off your boat you will land in water and the oat will drag you if too short your area of movement is reduced. You can do an easy experiment. Just ask a buddy to go with you sailing and let the boat just sail 1 -2 knots while you are in water whit your lanyard attached.
what are your plans with your boat? thanks for the videos - these video's always help someone out!
I’m not sure if you mentioned it but what kind of outboard are you using and what was the original engine for your boat?
@@BoatsnHoes69420 Tohatsu 9.8 - I think the original was a Volvo md7a?
@@youngkevin89 I have a CAL 29 (I'm in Baltimore). I just put an outboard on it and am going to remove the old engine. Your videos I've seen are super cool and inspiring!
Great channel A fine 28 ! So the original no skid with just a cleaning would not accept the kiwi? How long to remove the existing non skid on starboard side - tools ?. Thanks CD 27 Go O’s
@@MrBluoct I just sanded with some 80 and painted over the old non skid
Your prop wash is turning you and the rudder has to correct.
So how did you snag that slip? I’m fine on a mooring ball with no AC, but the GF is not.
@@davidpearl2781 just fill out a form on the Annapolis city dock website. The mooring balls are about cheaper
Good luck on your journey
such a cool video loved how you blended the music in also rad boat, I'm inspired
I glad the algorithm recommended me your video. I visited my uncle on Kent Island in June. Saw tome terrapins and some sea turtle nests on his beach. Was hoping for dolphins, but I guess it was the wrong season. Got to do some Hobie 16 sailing on Cox Creek. Hoping to get to do some more cruising on the Chesapeake at some point!
Great stuff, really enjoy your vids! Keep’em coming //Danny from Stockholm, Sweden
You are tempting fate with those bananas on the boat! 🙂

@@sailingdijan9128 I’m now convinced I need to repower with an inboard before trying any major open ocean passages
I'm liking you're videos! Thought I throw out there that any private (i.e sailboat like yours and mine) have to yield to commercial ships/ barges even when under sail. They are very predictable though, staying in shipping channels and have AIS
First off your boat is in absolute beautiful condition the thing looks new! Can't believe that boat is older than you are! Those boats are something else absolutely perfect for single handed sailing. And they have that full keel I wouldn't be out there in anything else (you can have the speeders and pointers but these guys will get you there!). Sam Holmes has one and its been everywhere but you can tell that boat is USED! He has a nice charging system though. Can't believe you hit a crab pot! Hopefully you DID have a hook on you on that dive, right? I notice that you have a reef bag on the main there what a great idea! definitely beats having to tie off reef points. Electric auto pilot? You do know that those things just don't hold up very well at least not out on the big pond.. self steering vanes work better. I did not see a good view of the tiller though thus I'm just guessing here. those sails look new! You don't have an inboard? Yeah I notice the gasser outboard there but these boats came with a small diesel. So the crab pot got caught on that outboard NOT the inboard.. ah! This is why you could get to it from the ladder yeah i was trying to figure that one out. That bay is fulla blue crabs I used to live in Princess Anne as a kid. Mosquito haven there those things would carry you off! Finally at the end there I notice that you do have a small solar panel. Nice boat it could go anywhere in this big pond, anywhere. Someday sail it down to FL (where I am) and the Caribbean. Remember that time flies so do it while you can still climb that mast there that's what did me in. Thanks for the vid...
Well done ! ⚓️⛵️
Wife wants to know what kind of shoes you are wearing 😊

My guess is that it is your prop spinning that is turning the boat.
Yes, prop walk will cause the boat to "turn" when under power.
Awesome video. Boat looks great. Fantastic job

I am looking to get a sailboat. How hard is it to get a boat slip in the Annapolis area?
Quite good. Your lifejacket is too loose for the clothes you were wearing: you should be able to just get your fist between it and your chest; and it doesn't have a crotch strap, so it will just ride up over your head if you fell in. The bow was starting to drift off when you came into the dock and in stronger winds might have blown you beyond reach of the mooring line - I was surprised you didn't keep a bit of engine on with left turn once the stern line was on to push you in to the berth. Interesting that you didn't mention fenders too. But some good single-handed advice in there
Hi, just found out about your entertaining videos. I'm also sailing at the same area on the Chesapeake Bay out of Rhode River with my Hunter 26. I use a 9.9HP outboard as well and use 10% ethanol gas with fuel stabilizer. I never had any issues with that in the last 9 years. Here is also some info about COLREG Rules for Vessel's Priority: 1. N.U.C. -Not under Command 2. Restricted in Ability to Maneuver 3.Constrained by Draught 4.Fishing 5. Sail 6.Motor (including motor sailing) A Barge falls in Category 2 Save sailing!
Nice free dinghy. I have been looking for a 8 foot hard dinghy some where near Virginia for my small Island packet for some time and here you just trip over one. Some people have all the luck. Looks like a fun boat to get wet in.
