I do remember the original KDAY in the late 80s. For 13 years, 92.3 The Beat, KIIS-FM, KJLH and Power 106 were the only choices for hip-hop and R&B. Once KDAY was reborn, I became a full time listener.

My favorite station all my jr high and high school days. Thanks for sharing this.

Just Imagine if the original 1580KDAY was still on the radio today I think L.A music play would have gotten so stale...

I remember this day I was living in Burbank ,CA. I was walking to my ex girl friend house listening to AM1580 KDAY with my Walkman on feeling bewildered because I heard that KDAY was going off the air but I didn't believe it at the time. I remember was KDAY playing 70's r&b music that they played when it first started on the air...I also remember them playing the last song I think It was the Jackson5 / The Jackson's then the song ended and the radio faded to black. J.J. Johnson was an awesome DJ for AM 1580KDAY....

I was listening to this live when KDAY went off the air. I was 20 and it was surreal hearing nothing but static after the last song. Good memories growing up and listening to KDAY.

30 years ago. Life hasn't been the same. Growing up in Santa Ana, listened to all the stations. Ironically, KDAY scrapped to the top. It's sad that we own and control nothing. It wasn't just the hip-hop it was the whole cultural experience. Gospel music on Sundays, announcements, advertisements and the whole nine, news, interviews, sports.

If cloud coverage was just right, I could pick up kday down in san diego, best station ever...

It’s hard to listen to this one....especially the homie @ 1:49, he seemed like he was gonna die without KDAY. Well, the departure left a HUGE void in black radio in LA.

I wonder since KDAY had a dynamic rapport and relationship with neighborhoods that other media outlets wouldn't dare approach, would they have been able to use their platform to somewhat calm anger and tension in LA before and during the 1992 LA Riots?

Other local radio stations, KACE closed up shop on January 31, 2000. KGFJ also closed in April 1996, and KKBT switched call letters n late December 2006.

Mac Attack Mixmaster Show Was The Baddest Mix Show On The Planet! Joe Cooley, Dr Dre, Egyptian Lover, Bob Cat, Julio G, Tony G, M Walk, DJ Yella, Gemini, Aladdin and on.... Plus they were actually mixing live! All of the Latin Rascals mixes were pre-recorded with reel to reels and samplers. These DJ's killed it, they ARE the grandfather's of true turntablism! KDAY broke boundaries in radio. Radio will never be as bad ass as KDAY! Much respect.
