Tokyo Airbnb Disaster 🐀💩 + How I Found A Replacement
I booked an Airbnb in Tokyo, Japan thinking it’d be a decent place to stay for a bit. Turns out, it wasn’t. As soon as I stepped onto the balcony and saw the state of it, rat poop everywhere, even inside the washing machine, I knew I had to get out of there. The photos had made the place look way bigger than it actually was too, but that wasn’t even the main issue. There was clearly a rat problem, and no amount of cleaning was going to fix that overnight.
So instead of being able to relax after a long day of travel, I had to start looking for somewhere else to stay that same evening. Finding last-minute accommodation in Tokyo isn’t exactly easy, especially when you’re trying not to spend a fortune. In the end, I had to abandon Tokyo altogether and head out to Saitama, about an hour away. Funny how things work out. I came here trying to give Tokyo another chance, but I guess the city had other ideas.
If you’re thinking of booking an Airbnb in Tokyo, the good places get booked up months in advance, and if a listing has no reviews, you’re rolling the dice. Sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you end up standing in a tiny flat, staring at rodent droppings.

The Tōkaidō Shinkansen, literally meaning 'East Sea Road' is an incredible feat of engineering, connecting Tokyo and Osaka in just 2.5 hours. Nishinari is a stark contrast to tourist hotspots like Namba and Shinsaibashi, offering a grittier, more unfiltered look at life in Osaka. From karaok...

fuck me that's bad... glad you found a different place for the night though
Did you leave a review on the BnB with the rats problem?
You reminded me to. I did it just now.
I find it quite surprising for clean Japan to be honest
yah good call gettin out of der
Yep, rat poop and pee is not good for humans.
In the same position I took an Ínternet cafe´ I believe they called it, acceptable but a bit odd feeling.
Some hosts try and get away with the bare minimum, or even less. Hope you found somewhere nice eventually.
Looking forward to your adventures in Saitama! Cheers :)
Gosh, what a manky balcony. Even the rats must've been appalled, as they obviously attempted to wash their feet in the washing machine😅...You made the right decision by going to a different Airbnb.
😂 They'll be glad they've got the place back for themselves.
@TravellingBritishGuy haha! 😂
thanks for sharing bro. i'm probably never going to go to japan despite knowing the language so i'm living vicariously through you right now, cheers.
Thanks 😎 but I also hope you can make it one day somehow.
Great video -- hit all the right notes on the cross-cultural points, which is rare on UA-cam.
Thanks. Yeah, a lot of videos on Nishinari hype it up purely for clicks. Shock horror.
We are staying in an Airbnb between Hanazonocho and Haginochaya stations. I mean, we are only using it as a base to explore Osaka and the wider area so not bothered about it being a bit more 'gritty'.
Makes sense. Cheap and still relatively safe. Enjoy!
Last Summer we were on the Northern edge of this area at the South entrance of Tennoji Zoo and close to the tower. The area was gritty indeed.
I always wonder how many people know what kind of area they're booking into, or if they just choose it cos it's a good price.
Yeah, exactly. Nishinari is a bit more like the rest of the world compared with the perfect standards you'll find elsewhere in Japan.
Thanks for this video, it seems pretty straight forward, BUT I thought you could fill out everything on visit japan web and get aa QR code, will the flight attendant still give you those paper forms?
It's up to you whether to pick up the paper forms. You can just decline if you're using the app 👍
OMG! I lived in Nishinari for 6 months back in 1992 and loved it. I had two young Japanese construction dayworker guys as roommates and they were NUTS. They were growing pot in the living room, trying to perfect the curing process with each new plant (pre-internet). We'd smoke at night and getting the munchies, of course, we'd drive to the midnight open air ramen park in Nara and gorge ourselves on kimchi ramen with heaping spoonfuls of garlic. At night, the neighborhood streets would fill with families walking to the public baths and I loved every minute of it.
Great story, love that
Thank you for all your Osaka adventures and the insight you gave. Looking forward to your Tokyo videos. The Shinkansen is incredibly comfortable. We rode one in 2023 from Osaka to Odawara. Smooth sailing all the way.
Hope you get to ride it when you come back.
I was staying there last week, i booked a hotel there for 6 nights, i hated it so much, i was about to camp my whole trip in japan, then i went for Kyoto and realized that there is more to see , i just packed and left with 2 nights left on my booking, and now im in Tokyo is waaaaay more fun than Osaka
Yeah, I enjoyed walking round it but I'm not sure I'd have wanted to be based there. Kyoto is basically the polar opposite vibe 😂
what did you hate in particular? curious, i was just in osaka so id love to visit and see the negatives for myself lols
ahh yes infamous tobita 😅
Did you go??
@@TravellingBritishGuy ive seen the youtube videos 😅
My 1st stay in Osaka was a hotel exactly opposite the first Tamade in the video. After a late flight arrival, I finally arrived to my hotel at around 10pm and there wasn't much open except for a neon lit supermarket across the street 😮 The bright neon facade of the store drew me like a moth to the flame and before I knew it I was waking through the front doors. Then ... for me, I was in the most amazing supermarket I've ever experienced 💫. The cluttered isles, random priced specials, strewn boxes goods, stacks of toppling bulk items and discoveries under neon signs at every turn had me thinking, Osaka is definitely the alternative Japan city !!! Over my 3 day stay my morning's started in Tamade and ended in Tamade. I still talk about it to friends and the Japanese people I meet here at home. Yes Japan certainly has some amazing supermarkets and B1 level food halls in their department stores, but for me nothing beats Tamade 😊 When I'm next in Osaka, the first thing I'll do is head to a Super Tamade ... and I'm gonna buy a t-shirt 👕 😃
It feels like a magical place. I had a similar experience the very first time I went in one by chance, before I knew what it was.
Just outside Chuo is Higashinari Ward, we're planning to stay between Tsuruhashi Station and Imazato Station more or less.I know Tsuruhashi is known for it's Yakiniku restaurant and bordering to Korea town (to the south side). How is that area?
I can't say I know it well. I've skirted round the area on trips to Osaka Castle and it seems fairly standard and average. You'll be close to all the tourist spots, and every neighbourhood in Japan, even places like Nishinari are very safe on the whole.
Got recommended your video and I really appreciate the little bits of context and information you put in! Love the simple presentation paired with your calm voice. I'm going to be watching a bunch of your videos now in preparation for my own Japan trip!
Yeah I like to keep it simple, glad you enjoyed. Good luck planning 🤘
1:26 My word. Look at the size of them. Advertising could use some improvement at that business.
A whole damn package for sure 😂
Why the B12 (and D)? Are you vegan?
Yes, as much as is reasonably possible while travelling.
The prices aren't bad, but I've never felt the need or want to go to a maid cafe. I think it's their energy and behaviours; I'd find the whole experience uncomfortable.
Yeah I have some British friends who said it was awkward. I think I'd find it funny. Maybe I'll try one day.
always been curious but i think ill just watch the videos on youtube hah!
Cheaper for sure !
How long before your visa expired did you go?
I had just over a month left on the 3 month one when I did it 👍 but I believe you can go at any point
What's the average time for getting through the customs add Kansai Airport?
On arrival? Customs is not too long at all but customs and immigration maybe plan for an hour in total. That's roughly what it took me with all the queuing.
Thank you 🎉
I’m surprised you went for the older model of the Cotopaxi Allpa, the newer version to me seems like such a massive upgrade since it has an external water bottle holder, an extra quick access pocket, lighter weight and more comfortable straps from what I’ve heard. Regardless, it was so nice to see the perspective of someone who’s just getting into one bag travel (like me) so this was great insight. Thanks!
Thanks for the comment. I didn't realise I'd gone for the old one, I guess that was dictated by the colour I wanted. I do wear it sometimes when I'm out and about in Japan here but it's been fine, no problems at all. I don't feel I'm missing anything, and it did the job when flying to Japan too.
@ In all honesty the biggest reason I’d get the new one is for the water bottle holder. I need to have my own bottle all the time, especially when traveling so that was a massive upgrade to persuade someone like me. But the Cotopaxi bags have been well loved for a long time and I’m glad you feel the same!
In Italy the button mushrooms it’s called white champignons and cream champignons or prataiolo :) we have others 3/4 types but idk the English translations
Sounds like more than the UK
Happy new year 🎉 This supermarket looks so fun to explore. I have to visit 😮
I think it's the best one in Osaka all things considered
everythign is so affordable would be paradise to be making US dollars but living in japan somehow
There must be a few doing it on the new digital nomad visa. They'd be ballin
Can i do that as a Canadian
No
Unfortunately I don't think so.
Happy New Year, TBG! 🎉🥂
Thanks Tobias, and to you 🤘
@TravellingBritishGuy ✌️🙂
Useful video, thanks.
You're welcome
always fun walking around a loft
I think it'd be great if they made it look like the inside of someone's loft with exposed inner roofing and random trunks lying around.
AH! Your videos are making me excited about getting back to Japan. We're visiting Osaka this time as well so these videos are great.
That's nice to hear. Have you been to Osaka before? I love it. Much more down to earth than Tokyo and less serious.
@@TravellingBritishGuy We've been to Tokyo twice so we figured that we need to explore Osaka and Kyoto this time.
so cool! gotta make a return visit now sigh lol
Worth seeing if you're a Nintendo fan for sure
What was the total weight??
I've never weighed it. I'd estimate 10-12kg.
Love your video's watching from Chicago in the US
Appreciate it, thanks for watching
just had some ohagi recently it is fantastic!
Yeah I keep getting it whenever I see it now. Solid dessert choice
The song is Yankee Doodle. What a strange song to play on loop.
I went back today and it was on again!
@@TravellingBritishGuy that's diabolical
Not sure if it's due to the lens of the camera but the aisles are far apart for a Japanese store.
No that's how they are, relatively wide. I agree but I prefer it like that.
great video! thoroughly enjoyed it. yes some things were expensive others not so much, try getting some bananas for £1.61 at waitrose haha. perhaps now, as well as other supermarkets, you could also venture into japanese restaurants and explore the food culture and japanese food.
Yeah I agree. Some prices are high here, others not so much. It's strange, overall in Japan most products will fall into a narrower range of prices compared to somewhere like the UK, but then you have massive outliers, like those grapes and strawberries. I do want to get out and do more types of videos soon. Watch this space.
Nice video
interesting naming trivia at the beginning! im always curious about in tokyo, is it shimbashi or shinbashi i see both used interchangeably
It will always technically be the n version in Japanese because there's only the ん sound like that available. But when it's said out loud in a word it can sound like n or m. It must just be one of those transliteration rules that don't always make complete sense.
Nice. Thanks for sharing
