Autonomous Crawler: DIY Aluminum battery-holder for you RC car
This video shows how I made an aluminum battery holder for a LIPO used for powering the computer in my autonomous crawler. It is shaped in a way to hopefully prevent too much damage to the computer in case of LIPO explosion.
I bought myself a software for video editing and wanted to give a go on trying something different this time.
What you need for making this battery holder is:
- 1.5mm thick aluminum sheet... size depends on your battery
- straight angle, pencil to draw lines on aluminum
- a drill and drill bits, screws and nuts
- metal files
- tin snips for cutting the sheet aluminum
- 2 clamps and a rigid/straight piece of metal for bending the aluminum on a table or a sheet metal bender
- solvent for cleaning the bare metal surfaces
- spray primer and paint
- straps for holding the battery in place
- glue backed soft foam/rubber for cushioning the LIPO against the aluminum surface.
Hint 1: When drawing the outlines of the folds on aluminum sheet... leave a bit extra space for the battery on all sides and also for the softening.
Hint 2: Plan carefully how you will fold the sides of the holder.. depends very much on your available tools and holder size.

If you go back two videos in your list, you will see you have installed the TRAXXAS metal servo horn upsidedown. This is why it is catching on the servo mount. Taking it off and turning it around (flip top to bottom, not back to front) means your panhard bar will also be at the correct geometry too.

I have the same plans for the front mounted Hobbywing ESC, to help with weight balance. I'm changing the standard plastic plate between the front fenders for a metal one, and will mount the ESC using a Thermal Pad to make the plate act as a heatsink. Hopefully I can get aluminium brackets to hold the ESC in place! Going to open the OEM front grill to improve cooling to the fan, which I will add an aluminium cowl to and install aftermarket photoetch grill to give some protection from the front.

Hello, first off thanks for sharing your RC ! Are you moving ahead with the brushless conversion ? If you are, keep in mind the massive torque it may produce compared to a vintage nitro buggy engine. I would recommend a slipper clutch still be utilized if you have not thought about it already. If you did not order already , Marwan rc online store may have a body. The circuit 20 series bodies look promising, but you might want to double check the wheelbase and track width. Yeas, it can be a pain with delivery times and purchasing online - but at least the selection is seemingly infinite ! Nice job on the screw replacements , something so simple - can end up taking so long and really not so simple - I admire the dedication !

Hi from Australia! I had one of these in the 80’s. Got it for Christmas as a consolation to the Tamiya Hornet. But it was such a great car and I have amazing memories of it from boyhood! Had so much fun with it. Even back in the 80’s mine twitched by itself too when the RX was not turned on. The sounds and characteristics of yours running was exactly the same. Thanks for bring back some awesome memories.

Well, Tamiya PS paints are a Polycarbonate paint that etches into the plastic that is flexable and forms a strong bond to polycarbonate. Im a painter of 35+ years. Your paint ran away from the edges because you sprayed it on to wet/heavy. When you spray any paint, you only very lightly dust on the first coat and let it tack up for 15 min. Then a bit heavier for the second but still very light, let tack for 15 min. Then the third coat can be sprayed on a bit heavier but not to much, let tack. Then the forth coat you can put on a bit heavier to get the thickness and gloss you are looking for. When spraying under plastic, it does not matter about the forth step to get the gloss because the plastic up top is the gloss so all four coats or as many light coats you want will do 👍 The Tamiya PS-1 white is one of the toughest paint to lay down. But it's 100% top notch quality paint 👌

What type of lock tight are you using? I recently realized that the one I had made too tight a joint and was very difficult to re open without damaging the screw. I somehow remember that I bought another lock tight for my trx-6 which I also put into my Turbo optima later… I think that was too hard locking.

You made putting the stickers on a lot hard than it really should be. If you use window cleaner sprayed onto the body to lubricate them, it gives you time to locate the stickers properly. Once you're happy with how they sit, wipe off the spray with tissue paper, it's so much easier. The back window louver section, I'd probably mask it up and paint it black since the decals don't cover it completely. Another good idea, seeing as the red decal will be different to whatever red paint you use, would be to use the lower red decals as masks and take them off after the white paint has been applied and then paint that section in the same red as the other red sections.

The documentation was extremely unclear about these. I cancelled several orders from Kyosho which I had made, after waiting for more then 6 months without any reply. I just did initial runs outside after snow melted and the car is fast even with default gears... first attempt went directly to ditch :) When summer finally arrives I will make more videos outside.
