My name is Kalvin and I'm an Australian guy in his mid-20s with a condition called FSHD. It is a form of muscular dystrophy which affects various parts of my body, limiting my mobility. I was diagnosed as a 14-year old and have only recently accepted it as part of my life.
I will be documenting my journey living with a progressive disability, whatever that may entail. Expect to see a whole lot of disability-related advice, updates on how I'm dealing with things, activities I pursue and a whole lot more.
My goal with this channel is to hopefully inspire people with disabilities to go out there and give things a crack. I aim to spread some awareness about muscular dystrophy and build a community of people to ensure that no one feels like they're fighting this on their own.
Stay strong ♥

My experience at the 2024 Sydney Chocolate Ball
Переглядів 126Місяць тому
Last week I attended the 2024 Chocolate Ball, the major annual fundraiser for FSHD Global Research Foundation. This gala black-tie event was held at The Star in Sydney, Australia. It was an unforgettable night. We were treated to a chocolate-themed menu designed by celeb chef Luke Mangan. Jamie Durie, celeb garden guru, was the host and there was entertainment from some amazing performers, incl...
attempting to knit a scarf in 5 days
Переглядів 3052 місяці тому
On my quest to learn random new skills, I challenged myself to learn how to knit this week. My goal was to knit an entire scarf in just 5 days, before the football team I support played their final. While the outcome was not exactly what I planned for, I now know how to knit which is pretty cool. Because my fingers are affected by my disability, I was curious as to how they'd go with such a fin...

5 Important Lessons from 6 Months on YouTube

It’s been a little over 6 months since I started posting on UA-cam and I’ve learnt quite a lot. Posting videos online was originally a way for me to come out about my disability and talk openly about what I was going through. It did quickly morph into a platform for me to share my life experiences and show my growth while living with a progressive neuromuscular disease. Starting up this channel...

This week I went to my first ever disability expo at the Melbourne Convention Centre. It was very eye-opening being introduced to a lot of the new assistive tech and services that are out there. As someone with a neuromuscular disease (FSH Muscular Dystrophy), I understand the importance of keeping my muscles healthy and flexible. One way I've done that is through stretching. This is incredibly refreshing to see mate. I’m 28, and I have FSHD as well. Sometimes, it feels like an invisible disability. Walking, driving, and everyday movements become challenging in your late 20s. It’s a frightening realization that something so simple can become a daunting task with FSHD. How did you cope with the realization that your body was weakening? I’m at a stage of acceptance, but there are still tough days. Thanks for sharing your story and updates, mate.

    • @dudeability
      @dudeability 4 дні тому

      Hey Julian, thanks for the comment, I can definitely relate. I agree that the difficulty with everyday tasks can be a little demoralising sometimes. In terms of coping with my body weakening, I definitely still have bad days. I've found that having some sort of outlet (for me it's wheelchair tennis) has allowed me to channel those feelings into something positive. I think acceptance (and humour) is really the only way to truly live with a condition like this, so it's nice to hear you've gotten to that stage. I'm still working my way there. I also really appreciate comments like yours, because it always reminds me (and others) that there are lots of people out there going through the exact same struggles. It can be quite comforting knowing you're not alone in all this. Stay well :)

      hey! I'm sorry to hear you went through that, it's great to hear you're doing a bit better now. I'm definitely not a doctor but I feel that creatine is something worth trying out. It's helped me with energy and feeling a bit stronger. If you can, I'd recommend getting your bloodwork done before trying any supplements, to see if you have any deficiencies to start with. From there I'd look into other supplements if you're interested. With all this being said, I do think that diet plays more of a role than supplements (for me personally). I find that if I'm generally eating healthy I have more energy and supplements will only make a marginal difference (if any). I hope some of that helps :)

    So what about supplements got any benifit?.

    • @dudeability
      @dudeability Місяць тому

      In my opinion, creatine is the main thing that has made a noticeable difference for me (better energy/strength). I do take a bunch of other supplements for general health and recently I made a video on the supplements I'm taking for FSHD (there's a video on the channel about it). I'm definitely not qualified to give out medical advice but that video goes over some things that I'm trying. Appreciate the comment :)

    Do your MRIs get covered by Medicare? Because even MRIs for injuries are often $400 out of pocket which is pretty crazy.

    • @dudeability
      @dudeability Місяць тому

      for this particular MRI, the FSHD Global Research Foundation generously covered the cost. It was part of their initiative to get Australian FSHD patients ready for clinical trials. The end result is a fully interactive 3D model of my muscles, which is a bit strange but super cool. It's unlike any scan I've seen before so I'm keen to show it! I found your channel from an FSHD Global newsletter. I've been following them since 2012. I thought about getting on UA-cam like you have but I couldn't ever take that step. The judgement, trolls and fear of feeling humiliated. So I really value and admire what you're doing. If I could cross that line I would post on multiple platforms. At least 3. X is evolving so might be an opportunity there. I have seen stats that live streams can be great for learning to engage an audience. E.g. "make me laugh". "You're movie moments" etc. Third I saw a video about Linus years ago that learning mentioned learning to project the voice was a big turning point. It might have been corridor or something. I know they have a lot on making the best out of footage. Well thank you for being a voice for me, my family especially my 4 year old daughter. When she's older, having ppl like you will be very important for her confidence and will power.

In terms of getting on UA-cam/social media, I'd really just say go for it. I was extremely self-conscious initially when I put parts of myself up online, but those feelings quickly faded away. I'm sure the world would benefit from hearing what you have to say. All the best to you and your family :)
