Green Sea Turtle: Cleaning Up the Ocean with Art!
chrisbeaven.com/painting/green-sea-turtle/
I’m extremely excited for this next painting. This painting could very well be the beginning of paintings that give me true purpose in my life. So many different things are coming together and I’m finding connections within these animal painting that I find it hard to contain the excitement.
Yesterday Pattie and I went to the Bishop museum here in Hawaii. A wonderful museum all about the natural history of the Hawaiian people. But what really made the visit worth it was when we sat down and talked with Manny at the Parley.tv exhibit. Not only did all three of us connect in our efforts of conservation but Manny also showed us how they have been pulling plastic from the ocean and up-cycling it into useful object.
This is when I picked up a panel the exact same ratio, 1 by 2, that I’ve been working on for months. Everything clicked! I want to paint animals, specifically animals that are endangered and need our help most, and now I can attach yet another conservation aspect to it. I can paint animals, inform others of their plight, share the profit with conservation organization, PLUS, paint on a panel made of up-cycled plastic while removing plastic from the ocean, helping animals in the sea in my backyard AND educate people on how they can get their plastics up-cycled to support the efforts. It’s crazy awesome!
This painting will be featured at the Parley Air Station in Honolulu next to the Bishop Museum. A percentage of the purchase of this painting will go to the conservation efforts by Parley.tv.

Mesmerized // Oil Painting with a Story

The camera was set to take a very long exposure of the night sky so there was nothing left for him to do but wonder around the mountainous landscape and make sure he stays out of site of the camera. It was cold. Wearing shorts was a perfect choice while on the long hike. It was hard work and his body was sufficiently warm along the way. Now it’s a different story. Cold and slightly shivering he...
Reverence // Oil Painting With Narrative

When he thought of Hawaii the first images that came to mind were beaches and women in bathing suits. But, when he had a chance to go there his urge for hiking and experiencing nature brought him to features of the landscape he had no idea existed. The pinnacle of his trip was when he hiked to the top of a small mountain that ended in a cliff surrounded by enormous wall of a majestic volcanic c...

Digging holes, finding small creatures from the sea, some dead, some alive and generally having a great time suddenly realizes that it’s getting too dark to see. He morns the end of the full day of playing, he wants it to go on forever. Then he looks out to the sea at the fading sun beyond the horizon and all of his passion for play and dis...

I spend a lot of my time alone. It’s not a bad thing. Most of the time I prefer solitude. I think most of us do. Think about the last time you went on vacation to a beautiful natural place. Where you happier when it was crowded or no one was there? My guess is that most of us would love to have a big chunk of the world all to ourselves. Drowning in the Day to Day // Oil Painting
Ive start playing with Georgian water mixable oils. After using acrylics and house paint for years, but studying oil painters, it's such a welcome sea change and feels much more forgiving and painterly :)
If the solvent free fluid is stickey what do you use for you thin underpainting layer? Also what is the fluid good for? Is the gel to help with drying the oil paint faster?
What do you use to clean your brush I when actually painting ? I’m new to all this !
I will literally pay you $1000 if you draw more Pokémon on your UA-cam channel😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
Chris, this was very inspiring. I hadn’t thought about matching the music to the painting I am creating. Such a great idea! Thank you for this video!
Fantastic video!! Thank you so much
Thank for all the wonderful and helpful tips. What would you use to put a light cover of paint on your canvas instead of using gamsol with oil paint to thin out?
10/100

Very nice and simple explanations of fumes free oil paint process. Thank you. I Love your friendly and calm energy.
Are the 20 or so sheets of paper left in place as part of the drawing surface?
MY GOD YOUR AMAZING
So beaitful🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉😊🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
How do you clean the brush in between painting strokes, in one session?
That is absolutely brilliant well done
❤❤, ❤❤,
Thank you, simplifying my subject. I needed that advice. Keep up the good work in these videos.
What about olive oil? They are semi-drying.
When doing the layers, do you have to let them dry every time? Or can you start your next layer while the one you just made is still wet?
Excellent video. And really useful!! I've been using W&N Liquin Original for a while, and I like it because it speeds up the drying of the oil. But I'm worried it's not healthy. Please, can you tell me something about the drying time of Gamblin's Medium Solvent-Free Gel?
How about a list of what to use from start to finish?
What do you use for your underpainting?
That Gamsol stuff doesn't convince me. The only thing it says is that it doesn't smell. That doesn't mean it is not toxic...
Are you talking about solvents or medium? solvents are needed to clean your brushes but not for painting.
Who😮
Thank you for tying this truth together. My best works have been when combining the emotion to the subject. A straight up portrait, bland, but add a mother gazing into her childs eyes, master piece! I love painting flowers, they represent to me the beauty and shortness of life. Often taken for granted. How do i tie this idea to the painting of say, a rose? In older times, adding a time piece, a candle, a skull alluded to the passing of time. In modern times I simply draw a blank. Have you any ideas? Your videos are fantastic!
Please ditch the annoying music
Thank you so much for sharing alternative ways of creating beautiful art, without using toxic harmful substances. As an artist I completely get it, because I got really sick from using all the products mentioned in this video. Creator didn’t give artist this gift to make us sick!
This video confirms I was on the right track when I switched to non-toxic oil painting. I clean my brushes more often just because I don't want leftover pigments creating undesirable tints in colors I'm mixing. I hadn't thought about not snacking on paint right out of the tube, though. Maybe I'll just keep some pistachios or cashews close by for emergencies.
can we use Olive oil?
Why is he naked?

Love this! Is it important to have a good stack of paper to prevent the clips from digging into the foam board?
Surely each subject bares a separate colour wheel….
Great video Chris - thanks! Just one question though about the types of brushes you place in the oil bath. They all looked like flat or filbert brushes, but what about rounds and riggers? I use those pointed brush types quite a lot with oil painting. Wouldn't they become permanently misshapen, i.e. the points damaged, after letting them stand on their tips in the oil bath? How do you deal with those brush types? Thanks!
Thank you so much for this. I am new to painting traditionally and I was wondering if I could use the Winsor and Newton oil paints with the Gamblin products. I'm not even sure if Winsor and Newton are safe to use honestly or even Paul Rubens oil paints.
I have been trying not to use solvents. I use ivory soap to clean my brushes. Cheap tip from my art professor. After I finish my current tubes of cadmium paints i plan to switch to the hansa versions you shared. Thank you. Also, I have just been using linseed oil or a mixture of linseed oil with damar varnish recently to make my paints thinner and more flowier. Do you think that is ok/enough or do you think i should be using some of that solvent free gel? What would be the difference in outcomes? What is your reason for not just adding linseed oil may I ask? I had to cringe with the don’t clean your brushes though ;) I can’t enjoy doing that but i do wipe off as much paint as i can then brush the rest out against a bar of ivory soap and water after every session. I have had the same set of nice brushes for 22 years. The only brushes I’ve had to throw out were ones of which a friend of mine’s little daughter stole/took and carelessly smashed/ splayed all the bristles.
Hi! When you are washing your brushes with soap, you do it over this sink, right? Is it safe to do so? Im a beginner oil painter, so thank you for the video😊
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Hi Chris, thank you for this informative video. I was hoping you'd elaborate on ventilation in the studio in winter. But you suddenly switched to Tip#5 :( It's winter Down Under and I'd love some more advice when you have time please!
Hermoso 😮😮
Thank you! I’m just getting in to oil and I’ve been a bit hesitant to start due to the toxic solvents. So this helps a lot 🙏 Is there other oils you can use besides safflower oil? I’m in a tight budget so can’t afford it atm and it seems hard to come by here in Norway. And if so can you still add clove oil to keep it from drying? Again! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge ❤
Safflower, sunflower, linseed, walnut. Any of these oils, avoid all others.
@@ChrisBeavenart thank you so much!
5:46 yeah sure... try to paint with that yellow that iits 100 times more transparent than cadmiun. But its ok, use what you want.
Layers work. Or titanium white first then hansa yellow over it to get an ever brighter yellow. Or just use cadmium. This is my way, take or leave it, it's up to you.
Great review. I’m a gambling, serious… how to replace colors like cadgreen or cadreds and cad yellow
Honestly if you don't eat your paints and you are not getting them all over you when you paint the cadmiums will not be a problem for you. All cadmiums have that other paints of similar colors don't is being opaque.
Water mixable oils, no problem. You soaking them compromises the attachment in the ferrule.
I have not seen that yet with my brushes after years of doing this. Acrylic is a great alternative as well, but that is not the point of the video.
How long did you spend on this?
you can see the entire process here: chrisbeaven.com/painting/tyrannosaurus/
I just started oil painting and cleaning the brushes has really put me off, I was thinking about going back to acrylics but I’m going to try out some of your tips!
Cool! funny enough, I'm switching over to acrylics right now because it matches the way I want to paint at the moment.
you just have to dip them in oil and wipe with a cloth, paper towel... or better still, don't clean them at all, just dip them in oil and let them sit until next day's painting session. you definitely don't need solvents to clean brushes, only for very wishy washy modern oil washes and only as an addition to other formulations, alongside stand oil, damar, beeswax etc. don't ever be afraid of art supplies, research and use them correctly. btw Titian lived well into his nineties, through the Black Plague all the while painting with his finger dipped in lead white all day. the toxic ones aren't scary either if you understand them and use them wisely, ie don't eat the lead white and clean up after use..
Very interesting! Thank you
Welcome!
Is there a reason you start with speckled background?
This was painted on a panel that was made from recycled plastics. The message is all about how green sea turtles are endangered because of these plastics. If I can pull them out of the ocean and make something beautiful from it then it's progress in a better direction.
Amazing! I had to watch it again ❤❤❤
Thanks so much Chris - very helpful! I wanted to ask about orange solvent? It says brush cleaner, but I will be using the safflower oil as you recommend, but, have used it when I need to remove paint from a canvas with a brush. Do you know if the citrus solvent is toxic? Thanks again!
Any solvent, no matter what it's made from, has the ability to break down oil/fats. You're body and brain is made of fat and fat like stuff. These alternatives are concentrations of acids that sound better. Better to do research on if these things get airborn like petroleum based solvents and can hurt you while you breathe.
