Classic Audio restoration and troubleshooting.
Esoteric P-700 from Singapore - a very unusual case of laser dying on me while adjusting it.
All the details are in the video but what I would like to add here is that this unit had laser used up by just over 50% when I first measured it (laser current increased by just over 5mA from 48mA when new at factory, to 53.4mA)
This is unusual, because they normally are only ever used up by 2% to maybe 10%, and the greatest laser current increase I have seen until today was 17% over the factory level.

Marantz CD-15. Now fully serviced and ready for another 25 years of service. Very rare due to price.

This is just to show how this very rare units really looks like. It features 2 x TDA-1547 (a.k.a. DAC7) and CDM-4 (metal version) mechanism. Service although fairly simple was pretty laborious due to byzantine chassis construction and difficulty with disassembly. It involved replacement of 4 belts, greasing of tray guides, cleaning of limit switches (2 were severely dirty) and cleaning of laser...
Marantz CD-15F - an extraordinarily well made player that is also very rare. See the built quality.

This are only my first impressions on the built quality. It exceeds all the Marantz players I have seen to date. Starting from the die-cast chassis and the way all elements are joined together, through Faraday cages for every important section, to improvements of the mechanical details like tray driving steel line anchors. I will sure make another video once I put it back together.
Marantz SA-11S1 SACD player that wouldn't read SACDs.Owner blamed cheap AliExpress replacement laser

When originally contacted, I declined to repair this unit, because I hate working on SACD machines, I have had too much work already and I hate charging people over $500 ;-). Given that the owner already had a go at it, it just looked like one of those jobs. Later though, I have found it advertised on Aussie Audio Mart - where I also advertise and where most CD players for sale are mine ;-) So ...
Esoteric K-07 SACD Player. Plenty of DAC options/filters/inputs etc. Very well designed & built unit

Very impressed with it as far as reading capability and it shows, that when done properly, SACD machines can be reliable too. Esoterics and Oppos just keep on working. Here, we had just a bit of hardened grease on the rails of which laser head travels. SPDIF output very square but with some ringing.

Naim NAC D3-5 & FlatCap Power supply. Case of failed DYI repair due to poor replacement laser
Переглядів 3352 місяці тому
Issue here other than lack of mechanical skills, was poor choice of the replacement laser. In case you need CDM12.5 (or VAM1205) use CDM12.4 (or VAM1204) but retain the original Haal Effect motor. These 12.4 / 1204 laser are much cheaper and better made. Even though the NAC D3 has the TDA-1541A S1 Single Crown DAC and magnetic swing arm CDM-9 mechanism, I think NAC D3-5 has a performance edge.

The IR resolution is 256 x 192 pixels, it takes pictures and videos, has a few colour palettes to choose from and two temperature ranges: 0 -120°C and 120 - 500°C One thing I did not like was that when the temperature is outside its measurement range it displays "over" whereas sometimes it should be "under".

Sound nice and mellow and is a co-operation between myself and Stephan Kissling, the local tube guru who built the valve output stage.

Hello, I also got one of these second hand, not in the best external condition but sounds great, my main thing is that the champagne color started fading....I don't know what to do
This is a problem with champagne units. They look great, but you cannot easily mask any damage. On black players, I use a special marker to cover scratches, rub the area with finger or cloth and the damage is almost invisible. Not so with champagne ones. But they do look beautiful when in good condition.
an electrical engineer wanted to charge me 600 dollars to replace the PHILLIPS vam1202/21LD in my 303/200 is that a bit much?
It is better to ask a technician rather than an engineer. Not only cheaper but also more experienced. VAM1202 is only about $20 wholesale, the rest is labour. Never worked on Cary, so can't say much about the price. Some people set their price at 50% of the player's current worth. It does seem excessive though regardless of circumstances...
Sorry for your troubles...I've had similar problems with customer units and as you say, it's an uncomfortable situation. Best of luck!!
If it's heavy it's got to be good 😊
Maybe does not have to, but it is a good indication of the designer and maker deciding to spend extra money. Not only at manufacture, but also during distribution, where extra weight and size matter.

Hi, do know of any usher mini dancer 2 in Perth? Regards
No I don't. I've seen couple of pairs at Chamila's place in Hamersley, but it was some years ago and they probably weren't the 2 version.
From your experience, how do you compare this CD player to the TEAC VRDS 20 and 25?
I only ever had VRDS 10 & 15 in my workshop so cannot comment
@@hear-net-au I saw on your channel you have a video with Teac VRDS-20
Indeed I did do a VRDS-20. For balanced operation, I would prefer the Marantz. As a transport, it probably would be the VRDS-20. Both very well made. Neither exited me sound-wise though.
@@hear-net-au Can you give me 3 suggestions that left a good impression on you?
@@vagk It all depends on the price range, But in general: California Audio Labs CL-15 (mid price) MHZS CD88E (Chinese) Wadia 16 (top end) I also liked Electrocompaniet EMC-1UP but I am into EC sound a lot. Some others too, but these have stuck in my mind. But it is a personal thing and also depends on the music you are listening to. I am into acoustic jazz and want the instrument sound real and the player to have slam and good resolution. And imaging.
This Cd player is on my list 😀 nice video again 👏
Hello. For what purpose did you install another resistor, so that it would read disks better?, and what is the resistor standard?
Because originally there was a 100 ohm SMD resistor there. I simply restored the circuit to what it was when the player left the factory. With the wrong 1.5k resistor the player simply wouldn't read SACDs
Not as good as the CD12 not bad tho.
Hi, I have a Theatre Master EAD8800 Pro but no remote. Can you make a copy of the working remote, or do you have the original remote available?
I have the original remote. There are 3 ways for you to get one. First is to find one on eBay. Second is pay someone to copy commands from an original one to a learner remote. Finally, get a Logitech remote and connect it to their server. Chances are that when you put in all the details, it will program all the commands to it for you. Good luck
In India none is having ead and I’ve been having this unit for the past 6 months, if possible can you copy all the commands to a universal remote and ship to Melbourne? My brother is coming to India next month, it’ll be very helpful for me to use my unit

Upper end Yamaha SACD players use magnetic rails, lead siks plus individually levelled/balanced transports for optimum replay performance. The Sony is a Nice machine though way a head of it's time.
Could you give some examples of these Yamaha players? I never get any here in my workshop and I'm keen to find out
@@hear-net-au The CD-S2100 and CD-S3000 both use an in house meshed wire drive. I own a CD-S2100 SACD/CD player.
Yes that HOP1200 is great as my Denon A1 & A11 and in fact the Denon A1XV units all use the same transports and those lasers and thank god they are definitely available to purchase here in the UK from a fantastic seller on eBay who used him several times and used his lasers . I also own a Marantz SA-15S1 unit and I had to replace the laser but that HOP1200 would not work so I had to get another one which was identical to the original. Thankfully D&M throughout around the tail end of the 1990's well up and until around 2010 or so fitted the same transports so you can now in 2025 get new lasers and parts for the transports D&M ditched using the original Sony KSS units thank god !!! As great as they were you were absolutely screwed as they went obsolete many many years ago and you can't get any new lasers or parts for those KSS unit you purchase a 2nd hand player if those lasers fail youve has it one very expensive 🫰 paperweight ☝️I personally and sadly avoid any Player that use the original Sony KSS units .
I had one of these and it began skipping within a year even with very light use. As another poster said, poor quality capacitors as well and poor remote. Like the rest of CA, looks are deceptive with poor quality build. Would never buy another item from the even for budget use.
I have two of their SM6 V2 streamers and they work OK. Never missed a beat, and CA make software updates for decade old gear. I find also they have good support.
This is why for my new Denon SACD player I’ve bought 3 new complete laser mechanisms from Denon spares. Might even buy some more 😂
But the problem was not in the laser being poor quality but the owner getting wrong ones. Laser replacements - particularly for SACD players - is not something easily done by owners.
Correct I bought one for my Sony sacd player and it didn't work
I believe there are 2 versions of this Laser same as the Denon.
Does anyone know what switch can be used to replace s002?
Did you manage to obtain a service manual in the end?
Only for the faulty part of the circuit
@@hear-net-au Is that for the analogue board? The DAC7800 is a 12-bit DAC, which would't make sense to have any real DAC duties next to the 1702s. My hunch is they function as volume controls of some sort.
@@hansjanssen3364 I haven't had a chance to look at it in detail as yet, but indeed it looks like you are right as far as digital volume control.
Used a scalpel as your suggestion and sliced the ribbon clean in two!
Sorry to hear that. I managed to do more than half dozen of them without any cuts. Then again, I have plenty of blunt scalpels ;-) You should have used the side of it as a guide for the ribbon to go up, rather than the edge. Scalpel blade is very thin, so it does not take space the ribbon needs and that is why I use it. But even sliced ribbon should work if you did not go too deep and not cut through any tracks completely. If it is just where the contacts are, resolder them with low temperature iron.
I have this Cd player and I've not found another I like as much since I bought it in 1998. I would love to know how involved modifying it for use as a DAC would be accepting spdif. I have an engineering degree in electronics but no experience of equipment like this.
This is not a trivial task. I'd start at looking at diagrams of players that have that feature implemented
@@hear-net-au I thought the DAC board on Arcams was modular. Therefore there must be some common interface
@@peterbroad1772 There are plenty of SPDIF output boards on AliExpress and some of them also have provision for inputs. Start with those and it should then be a matter of interface only.
Love the old meets not so old technology. :) I'm being picky but in a double insulated device the 230VAC input should have two layers of insulation (the blue transformer). Silicon (neutral cure) might do.
It's already on the 240V terminals. I didn't like them being exposed neither

Hi Roman, my Wadia 6 is still going strong. But i noticed that when playing for an hour when it is warm it gets more difficulty to find the next track. You can hear the player skipping. Mostly if playing CD writables and sometimes with 'real' CD's. Is this a sign of a laser ending? Thnx.
No. These lasers are pretty indestructible. This is just tracking problem. Do an servo alignment sand it will be OK. You could also do some recapping because alignment is necessary probably because some caps are becoming leaky, Get yourself of of these ESR meters and check caps, so you do not have to replace them all.
@@hear-net-au Thnx Roman, I will look for a company who can do the alignment. About the caps. What caps do you mean?
@petervanlaren7116 electrolytic in servo circuit
I'm trying to untangle some rather more bizarre repair/mods on the same player that landed on my bench. Pieces cut away, boards missing etc. Not that I give up easily. Noting that there is an analogue stage on the circuit board I realised that the main board is well and truly borrowed from elsewhere. There is even a leg off one of the analogue chips left behind!! So the hunt was on. At first I thought it might be a Yamaha board but I couldn't see any that used the same laser, that being, I thought, a key. Then I thought to search for the exact match to the laser elsewhere (Sanyo SF-90 / SF-P1) the board having had to be a match for the laser. As luck would have it I found a match in the CEC 780CD & 880CD ~ the display looked he same, same buttons (different style) spaced along the front...so I downloaded the service manual and wouldn't you know it, there was the exact same board!!! The difference is the analogue stage, which has not been removed (you could restore the analogue stage in yours) and there is an additional little board over the main chip in the Roksan. Someone removed the entire eject mechanism from the one I am working on, but it isn't necessary as long as you have the magnet clamp that goes onto the CD. So it would be a little bit fiddly but the one I have should be repairable in principle, and now I have the service manual (not quite, but very very near) I may have a fighting chance. Upon this discovery I had to tell someone, and your video helped a little bit (which is a lot more than what is available elsewhere!!) so you're the first to hear of my discovery :)
I'm glad it had been useful to someone. I do these as thanks to others who had helped me. There were 2 versions of these players, one of them where the analogue part was used and another a transport. This us not my player, but it belongs to a guy who was Roksan distributor in Malaysia. I fixed two of them. I still have a Roksan DAC and PSU waiting for some free time. Keep up a good fight. It's rewarding. Maybe not financially but still.
@@hear-net-au Now I have a circuit things can be done. I found a failed (shorted) zener and a regulator not performing already. I suspected that the power supply was involved in the issues I saw but without circuits and voltages one can fiddle around for days with no progress. I couldn't possibly make a living working on classic HiFi, but solving puzzles can be rewarding in and of itself :)
Visited a seller to buy a Studer A810 reel to reel. Conversation turned to CD players. I was informed he had an 'old DSony' in the loft which was not playing. Seeing as I paid the full asking price for the Studer, the Sony CDP 337ESD was sold for £35, approximately 15 years ago. The reason it would not play was because the laser protection mechanism was slid to the 'on' position. After god alone knows how many upgrades, including replacing the CD clock with Audiocom's Superclock 4. I now own an exquisite sounding player I could never replace. Since, I purchased another as a donor
You will not need a donor. These are very reliable. But keep the donor in working condition. Power it up every now ant then, probably once a month will do.

Better mount that resistor to the chassis to act as a heat sink. 85 degC. Resistors don't radiate the heat out like the tubes do and need convection.

I would be using 105 degree rated capacitors on any power supply on addition to improving the layout of that board.
I have already fitted 205 degrees capacitors. This is a standard project board from some magazine overseas, so it is not practical to change it.
