at least it's free
Star Sonata 2 is currently closing on the 20 year old mark. It's got more active players now than ever. The one major problem is an almost total lack of NEW players. In the past, 5+ years ago, it was very common to run across another player in open space. That's rather rare these days. I am one of the founders of Deep Space Federation. Founded as a New Player training Team. Not all, but many of the Leaders of most of the larger teams are in fact DSF graduates who went on to create great teams. And Yes, Teams are the very heart of SS2. You simply can't get far alone. The game is just far too complicated and richly detailed. Unlike most other Such sandbox games, SS2 has an amazingly good Financial market system that drives the game. Yes the thousands of items (many which may seem useless to the uninitiated) makes choices and possibilities that many other games lack. I've been playing (off and on) for nearly 20 years! Like you said, it's a grinding game that doesn't reward the trivial player. You aren't gunna get it in just a day. While watching your video, I kept saying, No, It doesn't work like that, and oh how wrong she got it... But mostly, I agree completely with your review. The lack of available information, the requirement to basically get a collage level degree reading the Wiki... Now you can see why Being on a good team is so important... Having people available to answer the unending series of questions, and helping you is invaluable.
great review
@@gamingwithastranger3358 Thanks! Glad you enjoyed
This was recommended to me, so that's probably good
@@chris9603 I'd say so too haha
What a goofy game, I love it.
@@david55509 Agreed, wacky but effective!

@@danielvandijk6370 Thanks dude!
On the subject of not being able to join the Republic: in the game series this was based on (Escape Velocity), there were many main storylines and joining one locked you out of the others - thus you would need to play several characters to see all of the storylines. You may have locked yourself into the Free Worlds quest line by that point. I’m not sure, since I haven’t made it very far in this game yet myself.
@@notnotandrew That's a good point and it might be the case since I recall the option for several profiles on the main page. It's a good shout!
I’m writing this before you load into a match so correct me if you covered this but I have wrote a don’t recommend on steam as hosts usually leave after your piece gets in like a 3x3 grid of their king and usually you can attack the piece or block it with the queen so it’s not like their doomed the hosts are just like bad sport ppl in gta online also the game is pretty janky with the b hop glitch the bishop wall slide glitch and things like that so all together your gonna have a glitchy mess with hosts that get mad when your piece gets a lil close to their king and they leave. Side note:I will claim my victory of being here before 200 subs and making the gpa between 9 and double digits not am I trying to brag just something I thought would be just cool to claim
@@carterkline2581 Since it's been some time there may have been a shift in the playerbase, I recall a few hosts instant quitting on me but most were pretty good sports about completing the game to the finish from my experience. I agree that online playerbases make or break a game though, and it's not great for bad sports. Haha thanks for coming to the channel, feel free to claim your early attendance kudos
the engine is custom made using vulkan I guess which is very impressive
It is pretty cool if that's the case, I've not heard of Vulkan much. Maya I know as a 3d animation engine, but they must have combined the two for different parts of it
Tho I am a few months late fun fact there is a dash that only exists using right click on the mouse the scaffolding area is easily made with a dash, you can dash down, left, right diagonally upwards and straight upwards. Unlike the double jump it can be done off of a wall slide which was useful in the poison area. The dash makes a few jumps easier but otherwise doesn't really change the game making it ever so slightly faster but far more jarring as you accelerate just fine but then come to a dead stop with no momentum at the end. The down dash damages the enemies but they dont take enough knockback and you have to land on top of them Also Left click also does attack, seems it was supposed to be played with both mouse and keyboard if you aren't using their recommendation of a controller. Just finished the game before posting this, overall agree with your review entirely, some guesses on some of the aspects of the game the blue stuff looks like it could have been a form of currency used to buy a cybernetic at the end but obviously was never finished. it seems that hiding the characters butterfly form is important due to the guy who tries to sell a cybernetic with skin on it as they might try to take your wings. Just my ideas. If you liked the idea of this game and want something that has actual polish (story, carrots/meat, better movement) I would suggest checking out lone fungus on steam its an amazing game but I will caution that it has some very tight (intentional) platforming but easy enough to beat if you ignore the side objectives. (Edit: I just noticed your channel description. Lone fungus is 22$Cad hopefully you are able to afford that if its a game you would like to play!) Hopefully this info is interesting at least!
Hey, I'm late too. Thanks for the comment, just goes to show how important a tutorial is for giving people the full picture! Thanks for the additions, it's good info!
@@Rover1172 Lol, you're welcome, and definitely a tutorial would have done wonders, though I can see why they didn't since it was a student project.
very nice
Was not expecting to see a review of endless sky today. Pretty good stuff! I've been playing the game almost since it came out and it's always interesting seeing how new players interact with it. Your point on the key bindings not being good is spot on. I ended up changing the entire control scheme pretty early on and it is much better with WASD. Also the plotline to join the navy isn't yet in the game. Right now you can only join the Free Worlds. Though, they do have their own set of ships that you get access to over the course of the story.
As someone who creates content, I always get inspired by UA-camrs like you who persist in uploading good content despite the low view count. 👏
Thank you, and for sure keep making what you enjoy! I like trying out all sorts of games as a hobby and I enjoy the passion of the indie developer and player space, so that helps keep me going

Thank you for this video. I propably wouldn't have found this game otherwise ^^ Spend some time with in game and it's really fun.
It was too short of a game. I loved it!
It definitely would have been nice to have more, I could look at those forests all day!
great video, Rover, I appreciate your dedication to making these very sincere reviews for very unknown games.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
This review is so strange… When you review a game you need to speak to the audience like they’ve ever played at least one other game. You don’t need to list the buttons in the menu or controls unless there is something interesting about them. Comon: there are hundreds of games being released every day. I can’t look through a 13 minute review with “now I know how to walk and jump” and “now there is a new enemy that works similarly to the last enemy”. A review is something that makes a viewer interested in the game in a short form: you need to tell us about your emotions from the game, what’s good, what’s not. It’s not a let’s play video with a commentary on top. Viewers need to know WHY they need to try the game themselves (or why they shouldn’t), not a list of every single thing you’ve seen in the game. It’s just a waste of everybody’s time, sorry
I see your points from the above, in some cases running through the menu there are features I refer back to, though I see that standard format doesn't always work if there isn't anything. My comment on the controls was the fact they had so many options to do the same thing which could have been easier by listing them rather than making me poke buttons, since the tutorial didn't really list them. Doing a linear overview is intended to give the viewer a bit of info on each level to tie into my analysis points, like it wouldn't make much sense to say the variety of mechanics and enemies work or the difficulty progression works well without any context of the progression or what mechanics and enemies are in the game. I'll definitely work on cutting down the verbage to keep it relevant for a slicker review. I've tried to get a stable format to make my reviews fair but appreciate in some cases this can lead to spare info not really needed. Appreciate your comment!
The chiptune track is on point I must say.
Comment
Lava and bats. Ideal.
main character looks sick though
The character design is good for sure, it's definitely done well on the visuals!
The algorithm did right on this one.
Glad you enjoyed! It's always unexpected for videos randomly to pick up, but I won't complain about a blessing from the algorithm gods haha
omg girll, where are your viewers. Keep up the work!!
Thank you for the comment, glad you enjoyed!
The biggest issue is the hit detection which is expected when the devs pump out games like no tomorrow, good review though
There are definitely some iffy detections at points, I didn't feel it made massive impact to winning or losing though that could be due to the balancing. If the playing field was levelled between all the pieces it might show itself as a bigger issue. Though I was also dealing with lag so it may have been more difficult to spot. Thank you though, glad you enjoyed it
Some useful info for beginning players: The Shuttle is the safest starting ship, but also the hardest to make money with if you don't know what you're doing. The Star Barge is more profitable, but you'll *only* have the ability to do freight missions, and it's the easiest starter ship to explode. The Sparrow is by far the most profitable for new players, since it makes mining accessible early on. For combat, this ship is very vulnerable to being exploded, so you would ideally stay very far away (strongly consider equipping missile launchers) and only engage ships distracted by something bigger than you. The tutorial mission string with James changes depending on the ship you bought at the beginning of the game. He'll teach you how to make the most of whatever you're flying, so be sure to take him up on his jobs. It doesn't hurt that he pays well. If you can, it's a good idea to pay extra on your debt. This will cause your amount owed to decrease, which makes your interest lower! Nobody likes debt, so this is a win. You can hold shift when you press jump to instead cause your flagship to wait to jump until your entire fleet is ready. There are also times when you *don't* want to do this - if you're being attacked in the system you're in, you can quickly jump out and the system isn't "running" anymore, meaning your fleet isn't being attacked once you leave the system and can follow you safely. Pirates will attack your fleet if you have more cargo space than defenses to secure it. There's a grace buffer so you don't get shot down instantly in a small freighter, but once you start building a fleet with enough cargo space, you'll need to begin considering how you'll handle the risk that pirates will find your hold attractive. You can find this information in the information panel (default 'i' key) which displays your fleet power and cargo worth. Your fleet power should be higher than your cargo worth or there will be a risk of piracy, which is also displayed. The game will warn you when you're ambushed by pirates for this reason. Speaking of pirates, in recent versions of the game you can use the map to show the passive threat of a system, using the radar icon in the bottom left. In general, uninhabited systems and systems to the south are riskier, but for asteroid mining are often the more valuable places to be. The spaceport offers missions that are usually more valuable than missions you'll find on the job board, and they're much more interesting, so make a habit of checking it. This is also how you'll be finding the various story lines the game has to offer. The ships you purchase usually have serviceable outfits, but you can replace just about everything on it if you want. Don't be afraid to experiment here! Maybe you can trade some shields for a stronger set of weapons. Maybe you can drop the weapons on your freighter for more shields, fuel, or even cargo space. Maybe you can fly without any generator at all, instead relying on large batteries, and taking advantage of the excellent heat profile your ship will have. Many ships can even be reoutfitted to fill a different role entirely, with a little effort. The sky is the limit! The Free Worlds to the South might want your help, and with the tensions between themselves and the Republic being so high, you won't have a shortage of work if you want to help them. The Republic and Syndicate do not as of writing have a playable storyline, although it's on the wishlist. I believe the Republic storyline is the farthest along, but it hasn't been added to any releases. Rumor has it that there are aliens to the east... I don't know much about it though 😊 There are also some very dangerous aliens that can sometimes appear near the galactic core. They seem to come from outside human space. I'm not sure what they want, but you should make your time there short, because you don't want them to meet you.
Your descriptions and explanations were very clear and concise. Bit of room boundary echo on the mic, but nothing terrible. I hope that you played Ghost Tales (I think that's what it's called), another very gorgeous and adorable mouse themed game, but of a very high standard, especially from a single, first time developer. This game almost seems like a proof of concept, and is a little rough around the edges. But the characters are well realized and the environments are gorgeous. And who doesn't love a twee, adorable little mouse?
Thank you for the comment! I appreciate your observation, the background noise on my mic has been bothering me for a bit especially since my laptop runs at the volume of a steam train. I've got my hands on some software now that should hopefully crisp up the audio and solve the issue! A Ghost of a Tale I think is the one you're talking about? I've not had a chance to play it but now you mention it looking at it on Steam it does look similar and it's a very good looking game as well! Agreed, student projects are very often proof of concept. I don't always know what their timescale or task parameters are and do expect some roughness to them. Generally the best bet is I see what parameters the game sets itself and see how well it lives up to it, but you can certainly tell when effort has been put into a game and I enjoy seeing the passion people put into their work. They really got the immersion spot on in this one with the scale and environment. I second that! There's something nice about being able to escape into a simpler, cuter world haha
I love your videos 😊

Hello
Hello there, thanks for the comments! Glad to hear you enjoy the videos :D
Fantastic, and very fair review! Thank you so much for checking out the game. - Simon, voice of Bongus
Thank you for your comment Simon! Great work on the game overall, I never really know how long you get to work on these projects and I imagine you're tight for time to get things finished. It's got a lot of character and I commend your performance!
Thank you very much @@Rover1172 ! To put it into context; This was put together in about 6 months time by a team of 3. I was simply brought in for a few days to do the voice work ;)
@@SelotesCinematics Good to know, thank you! Have you had the opportunity to do voices on many other projects?
@@Rover1172 I wouldn't say "many", but a fair amount for sure. Most of them have been indie/student projects, which have never been released ;)
@@SelotesCinematics Good to hear you've had the chance to do more though, and hopefully some other opportunities will come your way. Maybe I'll end up hearing your voice in another indie project going forward; I'll listen out for you! Appreciate your comments, it's great to get some inputs from anyone who had touch on the project even in a small way.
While this isn't for the reviewand wanted to add moreso just to explain for those who want to know more; Shiloh and Jeremy are both a part of GB other game XOXO droplets-- another VN that focuses on the MC [who is a selfish, rude person only interested in dating hot guys] being apart of a club for other troubled teens. Both have more scenes in the DLC for those curious and overall are intended to be awful no matter what [Shiloh a liar and someone who used others as a shield to divert his negative traits while Jeremy is a nihilistic, depressed arse]. So for more interest in them there is always that other way to explore their character but server more as an easter egg to those who are interested in the other game. Similar, for those curious about Baxter we do get to see Baby [well teen] Baxter in Our Life 2 which does a lot to improve on some of the things mention, most of what was cut due to being the first attempt of such a dynamic mc game [that having the mc appear in the side of textboxes for example. Also Lee was a character added for the person who donated the most to the kickstarter which is why they are so minor of a character.
Hey, thanks for the comment with a bit more context. It's good to get some understanding of more background!
Great video as usual👍
Thank you, glad you liked it
Good structured video just hard to watch with the video quality. Maybe it's just me. Still good to listen to
Hey, thank you for the comment. I'll look to improve the render quality but have also noticed I'm getting lag issues in my recording software which I'll look to address as it's making some visuals worse than they actually are. Appreciate your feedback!
I threw poop at a spider irl and it worked just like you said, however another spider was right behind me and touched me causing my soul to escape from my body and now I'm crying.
F brother, that's big sad. Have you tried throwing more poop and faceplanting?
Wow, whoever thought randomly falling down probably fell down on their head as a kid as well. The game looks cool, but they really should have playtested this more.
Haha yep, it's one of the more questionable decisions I've ever seen in a game that's for sure
Please keep it up. I just found you and I already really like your style.

Happy holidays and a great new year to you too!
Cute penguin game turned intense high speed snowboarding game, good review and happy holidays!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed and happy holidays to you too!
This is my tire list of the moments I only include parts of the main game because otherwise, we will be here all day. I also will not take into consideration of the beginning chapters, ending chapters, and the entire Step 4 since Step 4 itself is only a chapter long and it's mostly a callback chapter at that. Required reading: Your playthrough will be so much more meaningful if you do this Step 1: Shopping, Step: Long Day. Step 2:Dinner (only if you admit the $20), Step 2:Road Trip (Fond/Crush) Step 3: Charity (not dating cove), Step 3:Talks(play either fond or crush and not dating cove.), Step 2: Family. Messy Spice: Pointless Drama that didn't matter in the end Step 1: Growing up, Step 3: Errands. Step 3 Drive(dating) Step 1:Sandcastle (admitting $20 to Cove) Useless Fluff: Not always a bad thing but it is what it is. Step 2: Waves (I only like it because of the headcanon for my MC's backstory) Step 1: Fireflies
Good info for others playing, thanks!
