    This explains my grandfather so much. He was a Master Chief boiler tech from 1950-1970. He always drank from the same cup. It was plastic. It was well seasoned.

    I have a coffee mug I bought while stationed in New Orleans LA that has only been washed 2-3 times. The last time is was washed was in 2018 when one of the mess cranks in the Chiefs Mess on the IKE cleaned out my mug. 5 years of work down the drain. Thankfully I got it back to where it is now: nice and seasoned.

    My old man was a chief until he retired. I learned how to season from him, and I still season 1 cup in particular. I had it at work one day and the vice president of the company was using my spot because I was out on vacation. He literally took a look at this cup and said it was the most disgusting thing he had ever seen. No I'm not saying that this cup has saved me from bacteria and viruses, but it took me over 2 years to get COVID Well everyone else got it before me

    My buddy came over a few months back to stay at my place for a couple of days. We went out and had a fun night between breweries. Came back to my house and fell asleep. He wakes up for coffee and finds my only visible mug. He says, "This looks nasty AF." I hand him one of my traditional coffee cups. I love you bud, but don't fuck with my seasoned coffee mug. Pure flavors from different port countries.

    My uncle brought home coffee mugs to my grandfather from the Bon Homme Richard from 1951-53. All three brothers, plus one cousin served on Bonnie Dick at one time or another. And for the entire time my grandfather was alive my grandmother said, don’t wash Robert’s cup, just rinse it out and hang it dry.

    I bet the Brits do it with tea. If you use a white ceramic cup to drink that really strong English tea it starts staining the cup after only a few cups. I wonder what that stuff does to your teeth. Guess you better brush after tea pretty quickly haha

    Hello chief! I’m new to the navy and I think this is an awesome tradition! So basically the way to season your cup is to just drink out of it everyday and never wash it and it’ll eventually season like yours? Or is there a special trick to get it to be super dirty looking like yours? Thanks for your time Chief!

    • @coffeewithbill7864
      @coffeewithbill7864 2 роки тому

      It had to be coffee straight black. If you add anything to it, you’ll need to wash your mug as it will build bacteria. If you drink your coffee black, drink it, let it dry, then drink more and repeat. Enjoy your time in the Navy brother!

    Our standard 'mess cups,' were stainless steel. A fresh scrubbed stainless cup will add a metallic flavor to 'whatever,' you put in it. Hot beverages just made it stronger. So 'personal,' coffee mugs were used. Seems I remember a 'pegboard,' where sailors hung their personal mugs. Then they didn't have to use the stainless cups, that were used mostly by deak apes and bilge rats!

      It's really strong coffee with just a pinch of salt for the whole pot. Supposedly it takes out the bitterness. It was really for coffee that doesn't have the best tasting water or the best quality beans I think.

      Not based on any historical fact but I'm guessing that it goes back to the days of serving on wooden ships. Every surface of the ship inside and out would be exposed to the salt air, sea spray, and leaky decks. Sailors just got used to tasting salt in their coffee. Much like the rainbow sheen of JP5 on your coffee when serving on an aircraft carrier. 😅
