What's the chassis with the Walschaerts valve gear?
Same chassis, but the components for the conversion are no longer available
Beautiful!
Hi Simon, want to extend my profound thanks in getting Hornby TT120 off the ground. This is the perfect scale for my room size and my eyes. I do want to raise with you that the exclusive rights deal done with SMS here in Australia has not served me well. Every loco / rolling stock, track etc and every part I have bought for TT120 so far, I have done so via retailers in the UK, who had stock when I wanted and had it delivered to me promptly and at a cost that retailers could have not offered even if they had the stock. This is not the first time hobby stores in Australia have not had Hornby / Airfix products due to SMS supply issues. Do you think that the rights deal Hornby did for TT120 in Australia was a mistake? I have had NZ friends (further away) have better early access to TT120 from Hornby direct. If it wasn't for UK retailers finally being able to stock and sell TT120, I would still have nothing. Kind regards John
Hey Simon, I am loving DCC and TT:120, I have had to learn things defo out of my comfort zone, like wiring, electrics, but it’s all part of the fun and keeps me out of trouble lol
Nice Q&A vlog Simon, thanks.
Thanks for answering the question Simon . Hadn’t thought of the HM 6000 to 7000 route . Will look into that . I was thinking more of just turning your analogue controller to full . I’m only interested in running the occasional sound loco to be honest - already have over 100 analogue ones , so that’s why not going full DCC
Best I have seen in OO guage.I moved up to o guage 32.years ago with my late Father who got me taking pictures of the various brakes and associated rodding .The detail of these is first class .Well done Rapido.
As airfix is part of hornby was there any talk about making some airfix railway kits like airfix did back in the day? Thanks
Thanks Simon, TT120 is what has brought me into the hobby. When do you think other manufacturers will start producing items in the scale?
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and insights on this amazing hobby Simon. Just loving TT:120. Kind regards Bert.
As a Relative “LateComer” to this Hobby, I enjoy buying older and Broken Preowned items and Bring them back to life - I will Never Spend £100 on a Locomotive, let alone £300, Ever! and I will not be Drawn into dc/dcc division, when the Simple dc system performs perfectly well already - TT vs OO, OO vs “N” gauge, are all divisions that will eventually overwhelm enthusiast. It’s All very well saying it’s cheap, it certainly isn’t if it’s brand new, neither is it simple, if your not Technically minded. Whenever I’m at an exhibition I’ve yet to see a Dcc Layout that hasn’t developed a Glitch Drama that the operator has to tell me about, (which I’d prefer not to hear tbh) - It’s the Kings New Clothes Syndrome and people will begin to see it for what it is, and you can Predict this and Strategise that from any Angle you want, Simplicity is the Key to Success 🤷🏻♂️
It’s just a shame HM7000 doesn’t work with normal DC ie turning your controller to max snd using phone to control . That would have allowed sound/DCC functionality on an otherwise DC layout . Good interview .

good update vid on layout thanks lee
Thank you. Hope you're keeping well
Broad gauge please!
All good stuff, glad to hear too, that Simon is having some "me time" as well✌️😊💜👍 I'd love to do a business case study on Triang and Hornby from the late 1980s until now - but I fear it would have be a PhD Thesis in its scope - also certain aspects would be commercially sensitive and part of NDAs I suspect. Quite tricky 🤔🤔
Don't let Hornby go down like Meccano. Iconically British
I'm a bit suspicious of the "Family butchers" right next to the funeral directors on the GWR layout!
Yes. You have a point there
Hi Simon Whishing you all the best on your retirement. Just a new idea for christmas. It would be great to have the most famous loco off all time flying scotsman christmas addition. All dressed up in Christmas colour to go round the tree at christmas time. That would be great if hornby can do it.
I can see era one in 9mm with TT:120 used for Broad gauge. Or for Hornby more likely Broad gauge 00/TT:120. Nice interview.
Perhaps a proper model railway planning tool with budgeting and online ordering. If you want to model a period it will guide you as to what is available. The current planning software is ok but pretty last generation
SK has a genius for talking about things without mentioning what they are. Thanks for uploading.
Great stuff and really looking forward to seeing what you have planned. Maybe some things around TT:120 signals and other elements for entry level enthusiasts. 👍 Bert
I would have been interested to hear what the opinions are on the advance in 3D printing and the hobbiest building there own models.
I’m hoping for part three that Simon will talk in depth about the Hornby Thomas range including history and highlights of the brand peeking interests in model railroading. Now Simon did confirm back in 2013 that a character called Neville was planned to be produced but unfortunately never got around to making the production stage. If I had to ask Simon Kohler, I’d ask if he had plans on making other locomotives for the Hornby Thomas range we never got like Daisy and Boco for example.
Fat chance...
Another good interview installment. I love Simon's passion and enthusiasm. I was looking to get back into the hobby before TT:120 came along, but when it did, I went down that route. And up to now, I'm enjoying it very much.
I really enjoyed this interview that you both.
Thanks to Simon for the mention... Loving TT:120 and all about it. Its thanks to Simon, i'm in the hobby, plus the support he has given me..
Great to see and hear Simon again - great interview. I don't think that the hobby is dead - we maybe custodians until the Thomas The Tank Engine generation re-engage with the hobby🤔✌️🤞😊. Hattons? That's a separate issue, more to that than meets the eye. Warley is understandable, and aligns with my thoughts on the subject, and, the subject matter expert, Simon implies similar. Hobbies, pastimes are very therapeutic and more and more we are all realising that such is much needed in this day and age. Mindfulness in activity is as good as meditation in many ways. Our family's small garden line has encouraged several youngsters to join heritage lines, go up to university to study engineering, and others have gotten into the smaller scales and gauges. I'm convinced that those youngsters will be along with the hobby in the future. I've helped with exhibitions, operated at exhibitions, set up charity events etc, it's incredibly hard work and very time hungry. There are still plenty of regional, club and magazine driven model railway exhibitions. Let's just keep on keeping on and see where it takes us✌️👍😊🤞💜✌️
52 second intro! Keep it snappy😊
Great Video .Simon got It one.I use to morn Beaties when they stopped trading .Big shows are very costly. When I was in the Harrogate Model Railway club we had a big show that only broke even or made a loss.We had a vote and the following year we put on a show in a church Hall and the wives and Girlfriends did the catering and we made a profit enough to replace our track on the club layout.
Hi I hope you are well It always great to hear what Simon kohler has to say
Well TT120 got me back… well done Simon (the wife’s not impressed though) 😂
