Yamaha Virago Starter Upgrade Gen1 to Gen2 Explained
Ive seen some videos about it but I decided to make one a bit more in depth. Also part of it is dedicated to choosing the right cover and the differences between them.
Many thanks to Steve. Great man with great knowledge.
As mentioned, here is the link to his video about wiring:
ua-cam.com/video/zPVwNBAA82c/v-deo.html
Here is a link to his channel too. Definitely worth subscribing.
www.youtube.com/@UC808y1wllOATNZOYUfyAA4A
Ive put a note at the end but Ill mention it here too:
Before You decide to do this- check if Your block has a hole for the fork moving the idler gear. Some do, some dont so You need to take off the cover to check.
Also special thanks to Igor for help with sourcing the cover. Much appreciated.

It took 3 weeks to engrave it all, also probably because it was my first ever try at it so it was a learning process. I think it turned out great! What do You think? The rear wheel was sooooo hard to take off. What worked- was a ratchet strap wrapped by the axle. The thing Im doing soon after is pulling the swingarm bearing. @@paulnagel8161 Definitely. Bring another one back to life!
I have that but the assault. It is a very nice sled but hard to pull when cold if battery is dead
@@MattRabe-qv9jb Hard to pull or hard to start?
Thank you from Greece!!
My pleasure. Youre very welcome.
Thanks for this video just changed oil on my 950sm from a previous video and wondered why the KTM oil filter kit had a spare small washer left. Better clean the oil jet on mine
Oh right. I always wondered too. So You think its the one for the oil jet bolt? That would make sense. Yeah. Its definitely worth doing if never done before.
Man I miss riding in LA so much, LA national forest, etc., same bike as yours ;)
Yeah. Definitely one of the best places to ride on the planet😁
Beautiful bike, I have the same model, with Leo Vince`s and I love it. You said your 1 st bike was a 990 SM? was it the R model? and why you like the 950 better? Im curious about that. Thank you!
Hi. Thank You. Yeah, great bikes. The 990 wasnt a "R". I sold it when I lived in UK during going broke through pandemic. I regreted selling it but there was nothing else left to sell. I always wanted it back but now Im in LA and when I finally started looking for one- I found this beauty. I really like it being an R. A bit more rare and I love the black on orange frame. Looks like a hooligan. I also like the styling on 950 more-mostly because of more enduro style seat. Saying that- if Id be in the market again Id just look for a good condition/price ratio of 950/990. They are both great and both have pros and cons so all in all- no big difference for me to be honest.
Did you see that, 35 dollars for 5 gallons, that's 7 bucks a gallon, I'm glad I sold my car and bought an electric bike😮
Gas is expensive in California in general but thats a turist atraction gas station so has its own rights I guess.
I’m jealous. This looks like it would be a really enjoyable area to ride, as long as it’s not the middle of summer. I love the scenery.
The views are absolutely stunning. Yes. The good thing is that You necer sit in traffic so I guess its doable even in the summer. Not full leathers though🙂
nice ride dude
Thanks. Sore AF after but it was awesome.
great video and sound quality dude, how did you handle your voice recording setup?
Thank You. It took many tries to get the sound right. I ended up with the GoPro Media Mod, which is a case You put the camera in and Rode microphone with a furry bit on it. That slides in under the helmets cheek pad.
How was your gasoline range anexiety?
Moderate to high😁 That Roys service was scary. I got there and it looked closed and I had 5 miles in the tank at this point😁 Other than that it was ok but yes- I start planning every trip with gas stations 100 miles apart.
love the views!
Oh yaa. Its stunning there. Thank You
My dad had fond memories of water skiing and meeting girls with buddies in his prime, im guessing sometime in the late 50’s to early 60’s there.
Yeah. That it. Looking at it now its hard to imagine it being nice and touristy. Crazy what happened there.
awesome 👊
Thank You!
That is great 👍 thanks
My pleasure
Great to watch another video of yours🎉
Thank You!
Brilliant video thanks for sharing this... will be doing oil change on mine soon, really clear process now ive watched this 👍
Yeah. A bit more to it than in Japs but definitely doable.
Did it today, v straightforward... I've added 3 litres to mine and not even registered in the sight glass! I did try to get as much as possible of the old oil out.. Will go for a ride tomorrow and check it after a proper run see of it starts to register
@@JezWintersQualTech It takes 3.6 so definitely add a bit more before the ride.
Easy when cold, it’s harder when hot.
This one was just as easy hot
What exhaust is that?
Just straight pipes. I dont think there are any buffles in them at this stage. It was damn too loud tho
Love that Bike, im considering to trade or sell my 990smt and buy an 950sm, just thinking about eu regulations ans bikes like these getting rarer and rarer, think i have to test one to see for myself 😁
I had a 990 sm. To be honest I dont see much difference betweem them other than using manual choke sometimes. ..oh 1 other thing. When riding in the mountains with altitude chamges- its a bit harder to start whem Youre high up. Other than that- powerwise- pretty much the same thing. I personally prefer the look of sm/smr over smt.
Hey man I have the same bike. Can u please tell me what mirrors those are and what’s the aftermarket fuel pump u got? What other upgrades did you get?
Hi. I can check the fuel pump. I had no idea what it is. The mirrors are brand called Rizoma. They look cool but man, you cant see shit in them. I even bought stock ones but then got used to them and kept them. They look cool though right? The only other thing is K&N filter in the stock airbox but with side triangles and snorkel out. Rejetted to but only by 0.5. Leo Vince exhausts. The are brutally loud...or Im just getting old.
Is this on marketplace?
Hi. Ive sold it over a year ago. Maybe its back on MP but not me selling
@@_MotoMikey_ must’ve been a fun sled!
@@funridding2250 A friendly monster. Yeah :D
Thanks a lot for the video! What size was your allen key? What kind of grease and oil did you use? Thanks a lot!!!!
Hi. Thank You. I cant remember the allen size now. Itd been a while...I think it was either 12 or 14. The oil to lube the oring is just from the engine so the easiest to dab a finger in the old nut. I use 10w50 as per manual. I usually bounce between Motorex and Motul.
Great work so far!💪
Thank You Thank You🙏
the dragons are pretty good!
Seemed very powerful. Ye
Thats crazy how many drain points there are🤯
Yeah. KTMs keep you busy haha
What sort of fuel mileage are you getting? My SM950 only gets 100miles before the light comes on. 😢
It used to be 100-105 before. Now after carb clean and changing the mixture to 2.25 turns its a bit more. I usually fill up close to 100miles anyway but recently did 111 and the light wasnt on yet. Mines a SMR though so smaller tank than SM so I think You should be getting a bit more. Unless You ride it really hard like a track day or just..1,2,3 all the time😉
Yep , ya said it well. “If one an do the spanner work, awesome bike” if ya gotta pay… oUCh! How did you manage to get the clutch oil jet out? Mine seems well tight soO,,,I’ll just use compressed air to clean it for now
Maybe I was lucky but I took a minute to find a perfect screwdriver for the job that sat in perfectly and was long enough to get a good grip and wouldnt get in a way of anything. Then just not taking no for an answer-kinda situation lol
thanks for the informative video!
I could talk for hours about it but didnt want to make the video too long
what camera and microphone do you have?
Its Gopro11. Getting the right mic was a bit of a journey. Thats the Rode mic and its the best Ive tested.
Thanks
I like the weather the most😊
Cant beat that. Yeah. Riding weather everyday:)

Interesting material and good luck with the yt channel. Would you consider organising a road trip in 2024 preferably with a finale in Napa Valley? :)
