Comparing Rain Overshoes. Velotoze vs Gripgrab Flandrien.
My take on the different rain overshoes for cycling. Especially comparing the Velotoze and the new Gripgrab Flandrien rain overshoes. I will test both of them with the garden hose ;-) 00:00 - Introduction 00:47 - Types of rain overshoes 03:50 - Velotoze overshoes 6:48 - Gripgrab Flandrien overshoes 8:48 - Garden hose test!

Planning to do the Rapha Prestige Mallorca this weekend, and I´m taking my bike with me on my Douchebags Savage Bike Bag. Thought I could make a video of the process to demonstrate how to pack the bike and what gear I will be taking to the Prestige. You can jump directly to the tools or kit in the chapters below. 00:00 - Start 16:31 - Tools to carry 20:40 - What kit I´m taking to the Prestige

DWR treatment in Rapha Brevet Winter Tights
I have a couple of pairs of the Giro Xnetic H2O shoe covers which are very similar to the GripGrab socks. They work surprisingly well, they're fairly warm and their durable. I'm a big fan. Velotoze 2.0 are indeed more durable than the originals.
Amazing video, very valuable comparison, thanks! One question, you seem to have quite some spacers under your cleats - do you have a leg length difference?
Yes, good catch. I have 1.5cm leg difference which I correct with 3*0.3mm spacers. it took me years and lots of leg and back pain to discover the leg difference. Once discovered it was very easy to correct with the spacers. Best pedals for this are Speedplay as the cleats are designed to add spacers easily.
@@Basquecycling I have 2 cm and was always struggling with abrasion on one spot on the inner thigh due to the unbalanced position... am now also on the speed plays! What really helped me was increasing the Q factor so that I now have a wider stance that provides additional lateral support.
@@hansotto089 happy yo hear that!
I always find that no matter which I wear because I wear leg warmers or bib tights then this funnels the water under the overshoes lip
are the Velotoze overshoes with clips better than the basic version? Do they last longer?
Unfortunatelly no. Mine broke on the second day and one of my friends managed to breake them on the first day!
I was curious about these knitted things , thank you. Incidentally have a pair of Gripgrab cuffs which seal the top of any of my vast collection of overshoes because as you say if rain is heavy or prolonged the rain will almost always get in from the top and they also work well my winter boots. l live in Scotland and find these just work well and are no trouble to carry in a pocket just in case or for the commute . I think velotoze make something similar but i haven't tried those myself.
They are very good for cold and light rain, but with heavy rain (or very wet road) your feet will be swamped. Did a 3h ride yesterday under heavy rain and ended up with very cold and wet feet. I honestly haven´t found any overshoes that will keep your feet dry for 3h under heavy rain. The water always finds a way in unfortunatelly.
Nice comparing. Have used the GripGrab over a long period of time here in Bergen, Norway, and as you say they do let water through after a while. Also the membrane seems to be a bit fragile. The design of the sock is good, snug fit and sits high on the leg, and keeps you warm. Overall a very good idea, and hopefully Gripgrab can improve the Flandrien in the next generation.
Thank you for the feedback Nils. Also waiting for an improved version of the Flandrien, I think they have a great design, but waterproofing could be better.
Thanks Basque Cycling for your testing and explanations on good and fragile points it's helpful to choose
So what's your summary after riding all winter?
Both rain overshoes are really good. The Velotoze are completely waterproof, but much more delicate and can break easily. I broke 4 pairs already, and taking good care as I put them on. The Flandrien are water resistant, so not fully waterproof, but definitely much tougher than the Velotoze. I would say the Flandrien are better as all-around rain overshoes.
@@Basquecycling I'm a food delivery rider in Dublin - Ireland, which means I work under the worst weather conditions you can get and for long hours 😂 Which one of them would you recommend? cost x benefit type of thing. Thanks! Great video!
@@niel022 If you are a delivery rider, you probably need to walk quite a lot. For this reason I cannot recommend the Velotoze. Even if they are more waterproof, if you walk with them on, you willo probably destroy them in the first couple of days. You will be better off with the Flandrien in this case. Hope this helps!
The clipped Velotoze is just as bad. The snaps broke on mine after a few rides.
Mine are still working, but they are very fragile. Will someone ever make decent rainshoes?
It's designed for a couple of rides only that what the guy in the store told me.
Thank you for the test and I just searching around to find a good over shoes to use it in London : ) keep it up and wait for more video from you : )
Thanks Kai! I hope they work well for you
Hello, good test. Do you have results after a rain ride?
Hey Achim. Thank you for the comment. I have to do a follow up video with a real world test. I have used both overshoes in heavy rain and the conclusions are that the Gripgrab are not completely waterproof and water will end up getting into the shoe. The velotoze are 100% waterproof, but much more delicate, and break very easily. So, for light rain, the Gripgrab are good enough, but for heavy rain the velotoze are better.
