Viking Roundshield Sparring with Jonas Panzerbär
It was a lovely day at the Schwertgreifen Rostock OpenTraining in Bad Doberan.
I finally had the chance to have a calm moment with Jonas to fence outside of tournaments, in which he always beat me fair and square.
Let me know what you think.
Thanks to the FC Doberan for the support!

Full Target line fight with spears | Berlin Buckler Bouts XVII

We tried to reconstruct early medieval line combat with a full target zone. Of course, the non-sharp weapons and flexible spears bring some limitations to the conclusion of this experiment. The most prominent hit zones were the face, throat the chest. I (blue pants) tried out some sliding techniques with a 2,1m one-handed spear. Thank you to all participants! MartzokVikingCombat in...

So I finally had the chance to try some slow sparring with Germanic oblong shields at the BB in Berlin! It was very interesting! 7:11 Wait.. As a newcomer to this sport... Do you ever use this attack?? I mean from medieval longsword fighting pov I can see the point, but we (in this sport) cant score points to the head, nor are we even allowed to hit that close to the head. Or are you under other rules than ours? (Western fighting style).

    Lets say i was a viking and i my fellow viking was in a city, they put a sword in the ground, the sword edges points to NORTH the direction to the city, so i with my shield place it so that the direction alings. so i can get the fixed position on me. Purley hypothetical tho. not true at all. they used shileds and swords in combat.

    Historical Viking shields were around 7-8 lbs. When you factor in context, the light weight makes sense. Raiders travelling by longboat, then travelling at a face pace TO and then FROM their raids.

    Excellent video, thank you so much. One topic that I have found very little information on (and would love to hear more about) is shaft diameter. I think there are a lot of questions about how the spear was held and used, particularly single handed, and a lot of that depends on the weight of the full spear. Obviously, the shaft diameter plays a big part in that total weight. I can easily control a 1.5cm shaft, even while cutting with a 2m spear. But a 2.5cm shaft changes things completely.

    Very cool video! Thank you for posting! I thought it was interesting that most of the engagements didn't have a shield on shield bind, and for what I saw, most of the shield binds came after one or two actions with the sword. Is that typically how fights with viking shield go, or was that specific to this engagement?

    • @alexandermartzok_vikingcombat
      @alexandermartzok_vikingcombat Рік тому

      Thanks! Well that depends. Most reenactors are not used to the bind and flee as long as possible (going back like here) or just rush in hitting on the legs (mostly ending in double hits). With the first ones you have to lure them a bit and then counter which results mostly in only a final bind if at all. With the latter ones, binding and keeping distance can actually help but you have to have really good footwork. Constant shield binding only happens with people who also fence in a binding-heavy system. There are fewer double hits in my experience but you need a lot of shoulder and arm strength/endurance.

      @alexandermartzok_vikingcombat Рік тому

      Every skilled martial artist knows that every guard has its advantage and disadvantages. I even state that the guard is vulnerable to stabs in the following videos. I often use it too lure opponents into stabbing and use the counter to gain an advantage, like here ua-cam.com/video/4u8Q_d9w5vI/v-deo.html or here ua-cam.com/video/4u8Q_d9w5vI/v-deo.html.
