    I was surprised not to see Big Couloir at Big Sky on here. As for in bounds runs at Snowbird, forget Great Scott. That run is cake if the snow is good. Pipeline is the one that somebody said should have been mentioned. I watched a video of it the other day. It’s open only a few days each season. I would never dare try it given that the hike to it alone looks sketchy, and the climb down in over the rocks has to be done flawlessly, otherwise falling means a closed casket funeral.

    Even though all the runs are impressively long, the ski resorts you mentioned have exaggerated their actual distances, inflating the number of runs by 25% to 50%, with the exception of Revelstoke. In the case of Sölden, what they claim as a single run is actually a combination of three, and it still doesn't reach 15 kilometers, despite its impressive length and even greater vertical drop.

    I remember going skiing every year for maybe 2 weeks as a kid. But, at some point, my family decided to stop going so regularly. I grew up to learn that it's due to these ridiculous prices. I can now only afford to ski maybe one week in 4-5 years. Abhorrent greed.

    Europeans typically get more vacation days, so the resorts are busier midweek than similar US resorts, where usage is more concentrated into the weekends.

    There's always 2-3 very dangerous turns and it's beyond me why they don't implement greater safety features than the standard fencing in those locations. It's also insane how tight they have their skis locked to their boots - tumbling down the mountain end over end at 60 mph and they stay attached well past the strength of a ligament. There has got to be a happy medium for life and limb.

    Whitefish Ski Resort is not new. It has been around since 1947. It use to go by the name Big Mountain. But rebranded itself as Whitefish in 2007, which is the name of the town nearby. I skiied it a few times in the 1980s and 1990s. You can take the Amtrak Empire Builder train leaving from Seattle at around 6 PM and arrive in Whitefish at 7,30AM. Makes for a great three day weekend. Sleep on the train both ways.

    • @nikolatesla5553
      @nikolatesla5553 День тому

      @MarkDenler Is that 28 hours each way or total? I enjoyed Whitefish because the snow is drier there than the local Cascades resorts and the train means I don't have to drive.

    Non-contact injuries are the worst. Even if you come back from them, you are never the same mentally, because in your head you're constantly thinking "if I push a bit harder, will something go wrong again?" and that's a very difficult mental block to overcome.

    Putting Great Scott on this list when Pipeline is right there is wild to me. There are some seasons Pipeline doesn’t open at all. Great Scott is steep, and the top is super rocky, but it’s like a sledding hill compared to Pipeline. My dad has been skiing LCC since the 70s and the first time he dared ski Pipeline was last season. That man has skied Chamonix and La Grave multiple times and spent weeks working himself up to do Pipeline. I’ll ski laps on GS like it’s nothing and have since I was 13 but my dad straight up refused to take me to do pipeline because of how sketchy the approach is.

    using day ticket comparisons is just stupid. Most people who ski usa buy a season pass. Right now epic season passes start at us$399 but many travel agents discount these by 10% or more, so say us$359. Ski only 10 days a year & that's less than usd$36/day.

    Slopes are better in the Alps than in Utah or Colorado, go to Chamonix (FRA) or Courchevel (FRA) or Zermatt (SWI) or Verbier (SWI) and you will find not only first class skiing opportunities, but also great lifestyle compared to USA.

    I'm a Steamboat Springs local. You can take your capitalism, comments and cram it. I'm sure you're comfortable where you live with a Walmart knowing, that you were never be without power or without power for any length of time, because by God that Walmart is going to rank rank. It's going to be open so you can go buy all your b*******at your One stop shop. You won't care about all of the old people that will die without power out in the country being the reason your power hasn't been turned on yet. With that being said without a corporation that means something... And for all of you, entitled lazy, tax exempt wannabes... Our White collar executives and professionals, take the time every year to pick up trash off of our highway. When we need first responders we vote and pay the higher cost of taxes to warrant them. When the steamboat Hayden airport is the only accessible Airport, we vote and pay for more airspace and more are time, ourselves. Our hotels don't charge you for a shuttle ride from the airport. Are pot shops have shuttles. We have free public transportation in lieu of buses. There is absolutely no need for an automobile in Steamboat Springs. And when you do have one because of course we have cars... If it breaks down or your spouse needs it or your child needs it or you can't afford to put gas in it.... There's a bus stop within two blocks of wherever You are, to save your ass. Do you want me to get into when you have a child.... And these epic passes do a lot more than just give you some ski hours. They give you gondola rides and passes with free guests. They give you a lot of things in this city that one would selfishly believe that should be an entitlement of every citizen to be free. But guess what? Freedom is just another word for, not a f****** thing to lose. But I will say as a local I get a discount on that f****** epic pass. And for those of you who are not scares and do not classify yourself with how many hours you have skied... Keep your f****** opinions to yourself because you are coming up with an ideology that is ignorant and stupid....because you've never skied a f****** day in your life. Government control! Bulshit taxes! Infrastructure is b*******and just another way for them to Rob Us blind! Those opinions come from people who don't have a goddamn thing anybody else would want, let alone, rob from you. It's a big world. And it's a goddamn big United States of America. If you don't like where you live, move on down the road. You are probably one of the problems, in some of our beautiful landscapes and neighborhoods in this country. Always wanting a free f****** ride. The world is not built for your convenience, like you're f****** Walmart One stop shop. Kill and obliterate all of your traditional mom and pop businesses and your way of life... And then let that b******* spew out of your mouth about the good old days and what the government's doing to you today. Like I said,,,you're the problem, you've heard the tale of, in this country. And remember, don't bite the hand that feeds you. And whatever common wage job your common simple-minded critical thinking skills you are qualified for, that allows you to buy your cereal at Walmart? 😂😂😂😂Don't mistake that for your ability to feed yourself. And you can count on people like me in this country to make sure the road you drive on to get there is paved, and if you want to jump on an airplane and pretend your worldly, well, you have me to thank for that as well. Your tax dollars that you pay... my f****** ass. I pay taxes. I don't get a refund like it's f****** Christmas in January. I don't get child tax credits because my children are grown. And I sure as f*** don't get, earned income credit. Animal old enough not to even get to use my f****** interest because of my Capital any longer. And I sure as f*** didn't get my free f****** welfare check during the pandemic, just for the simple fact that I am someone who understands capital gains relief. And it sure as f*** was never meant to be forgiveness. And for some reason you think your taxes were cheaper and the economy was better under the Trump administration compared to the Biden administration. Like I said, shut your ignorant f****** mouth because someday you're going to look back and be so f****** embarrassed.

    As someone who has skied Rambo myself, I can conclude it is not really challenging enough to be at number one. Instead, I believe that Third Bowl can be one of the hardest runs in North America if you know where to look. I wouldn't put this at number one, but it would probably be on my list.

    Its because the US federal government controls all the available land in the west, and since NEPA, creating new ski areas in national forests is basically impossible, building new roads is impossible, and expanding existing terrain is challenging. Combine that with increasing market power of Vail and Alterra, and the monopolies are perfectly happy with current environmental regulations that make it impossible for any new entrants to expand.
