How a Greenland paddle can expand your kayaking horizons?
“I think a lot of people focus a lot on the catch phase of a Euro blade, which is in the front. So you have a lot of immediate get up and go. The Greenland, the most power you're getting is during the stroke. So you actually don't feel that same start to go, but you have more momentum carrying you forward with less impact.
So I think once people wrap their heads around that, they can find that power that the Greenland can offer, just not at the same part of the stroke."

I feel like I don't need that much gear on my deck.
Дуже гарна робота! У Вас можливо замовити і відправити в Україну?
And watch your kayaks go kiteboarding without you!!.. lol. just kidding. Great products!!!
Please make titanium zippers, or just plastic zippers. I hope this metal zipper does not corrode.
Great video, love the energy and the keenness for a challenge, I did this to myself with skiing>snowboarding>telemark and loved the growth. Just bought an Ipik, came here to see if the company had a video but was disappointed, please make a video for this product too?
I tried this bag but returned. didn’t like how the compartments/zippers are in the sides, should have a compartment/opening right in front of you.
make different size paddle blade tips, so we can add or remove length as desired
There are a lot of seniors in kayaking. For me, maybe others, the video is too many clips too fast, it makes me dizzy. I had to quit after a minute in. But I hope it works for everyone else.
How come she is the only woman to attain Level 4 Instructor status? Has no other woman ever attempted to get that?
Beautifully produced video.
So at 5’7” is the 230 considered the “longer paddle” or is the 220 the longer paddle? That would be a different answer if you were 6’4” right? So nothing was answered in this video. 🤦🏻♂️ Which paddle would you choose for “more power” at 5’7”?
Would be nice to see more Dealers here in the UK that offer Gearlab Gear. I think at the minute I have only found the Kalleq for sale at one maybe two places.
Beautiful life style. Beautiful kayak and beautiful video. Inspiring
Have they been tested in surf?
I love and only use Greenland paddles. I paddle on lk Erie in Ohio. I use a hand carved paddle that was given to me. Someday, I will buy one of your paddles. It will be a while, got to save up.
I want to paddle in Lake Erie! Eating a kayak soon….
Ok, that’s pretty slick.
UA-cam must be able to read my mind. I was looking at one of my boats yesterday and contemplating how to secure a spare paddle to it and considering making something like this.
Makes me want to get out there and I just got back from kayaking
I just got my first Greenland paddle. Can't to try it
100%
Why are greenland paddlers slower too?
I learned to paddle in Okinawa using their native wooden paddle that has a blade very similar to the GP. I have far less experience with a euro paddle being forced to use one only when on guided tours. So I am coming from the other side. I currently have the Akiak and find it immensely easy to use. I wish to try the Ipik because of the oval loom. I also hope it is a little more buoyant. Wooden paddles always feel buoyant. In Okinawa we paddle by digging the blade in to the hilt (loom) and sweeping back in an almost vertical stroke probably like Hawaiians do. On my own kayak I am not so aggressive. I stroke like a penguin flying my flippers through the water. I end in the braced position. Next time I take a guided tour I will take my GP with me. Mostly retired folks anyway taking those tours through mangrove forests so I have no worries and will easily stay ahead.
Lo Bueno es lo Bueno. Los felicito!
I love my Gearlab paddle! 💯🤩. Great video!
Such a beautiful made video. Great footage! I think anyone who uses the GP will agree with what was said in this video!
promo sm ☀️
I think a more compelling argument might be the longer the paddle, the lower the angle. High angle is closer the kayak and gives you a faster cadence so you could conclude that this would be the more powerful stroke. I do agree that 220 gives the best of both worlds though.
WOW.. good!
Hi, i put a KS GREENLAND PADDLE SPLIT into my 5 year old EAST POLE NANOOK, using only hand tools and.. no epoxy!🤙
If more people go and do what this lady likes to do she will definitely see lots of people!
I kayak out of Sheffield lake Ohio on lake Erie. I use only Greenland paddles. I have a euro blade for a spare, but it has only hit water in the 2 years I've had it. I feel more secure with a Greenland paddle, especially in rougher water. I am self thought, I won't tale ACA training due to their push for euro blade paddles. I learn better on my own, but I recommend kayaking classes for most people. It's nice to see a female instructor though, it helps get more women into kayaking. Good video, and thank you for speaking truth about how great Greenland paddling is.
These look a really good idea. Do hey lock in position so to prevent them sliding up or down the decklines?
Hello Ian, yes, Paddle Clutch is equipped with the Deckhand fastener, which bite the deck line very tight preventing sliding. Learn more about Deckhand: gearlaboutdoors.com/collections/accessories-parts/products/paddle-clutch
Wonderful video, very refreshing to see another top performing female paddle expert. I was wondering, is that a NDK Echo?
That is an NDK romany classic, custom bulkhead (no footpegs) and had it made without the skeg.
Is Amber's Ipik stuck in one piece? Mine stuck permanently after the second time putting it together, and I noticed she stowed it in a single piece on the outside of her vehicle too. I love it, it's just no longer a breakdown paddle!
I think she’s using a Kalleq. It’s a 2 piece and doesn’t seem stuck.
@Noel Yong they show a brand new kalleq in 2 pieces but the paddle she's using in most of it is the Ipik- and you see at the beginning that it's stored in a single peice, outside of her vehicle.
Had to look at the video again and of course you are right! Good eyes! Hopefully Ms Champion will see your comments and get back to you regarding whether her Ipik is stuck together like yours. I guess you must have contacted Gearlab about this? They are usually very responsive.
We're sorry to hear that. May you drop us an email and we will take care of this. Please write to here: sales@gearlaboutdoors.com
@@gearlaboutdoors2594 ok, I sent an email.
Love it!
I can't wait to use mine this season!
Hey!
This is the second most valuable item I bought to get started with Greenland style rolling. First one is the Tahe Zegul Greenland kayak with an Ocean Cockpit, which has a much better fit than then the plastic kayaks at my club, the Kajakhotellet in Copenhagen, Denmark. I began sea kayaking in September 2021, bought the Gearlab rolling float the same month. Used it during the autumn and winter to practice rolling on my own, in very cold water here in Denmark. I attached the Gearlab rolling float to a paddle leash, so I didn't have to do a wet exit when practising rolling. If I couldn't come up, I pulled on the leash, grabbed the rolling float and rolled up with it. A year later I can do the aft finishing hand roll and a couple of other rolls. Convinced 13 other people at my club to buy the Gearlab rolling float, and everyone loves it. Now it's sold out at the kayak store selling Gearlab equipment in Copenhagen. Can only recommend it to anyone trying to learn how to roll. Despite the fact that it's an expensive item here in Denmark, at US $ 127! A friend managed to learn the hand roll 8 weeks after his first sea kayak experience, after first learning the brace float. He tried to learn how to roll with one of the standard foam paddle floats, I showed him the Gearlab rolling float, he bought it the next day, could do the brace float within two weeks without using a paddle. Amazing product, thanks to the whole Gearlab team!
Good logic.
I am 6’2” tall and purchased a 230 cm Kalleq having never ever paddled with a Greenland paddle. Almost immediately I loved it. In the beginning though I kept wondering if maybe I should have gone with a 220 cm paddle, mainly because that’s what my euro paddle length is. But the 230 cm was recommended by my seller . Now I feel the 230 cm is the perfect size for me , I can paddle high angle for lots of power or a lower angle for less power but an easier paddle . Now my euro paddle feels odd to use. I’m still learning to roll with my n Greenland paddle.
Is it water proof yet? That’s the only complaint I had about the original deck pod. It’s cool you’ve upgraded it, but if I still have to use dry bags inside of it I still don’t want it.
Agree!
Thank you for the comments. We understand your thought but we still decided keep the Deck Pod drainable in version 2. Here's the reason why we chose to make the Deck Pod 2 drainable, rather than waterproof: gearlaboutdoors.com/blogs/insights/why-we-chose-to-make-the-deck-pod-2-drainable-rather-than-waterproof
I have two old Akiaks 205cm. I’m 170 cm long but paddle narrow kayaks and prefer doing technical paddling and rolling, also some long expeditions. You are right that a longer paddle gives more power but then why not use a Euro paddle if you want power? To go faster with a Greenland paddle, just increase the cadence! For me the GP is about smoothness and agility that I can’t get with a EP. Also you have to take the beam and height of the deck in consideration. A wider and higher kayak needs a longer blade and a low narrow kayak (eg. Ilaga, Black Pearl or a Greenlander) you can use a shorter paddle.
I was expecting something like the details in your comment from the paddle maker.
Problem is....when I pronounce it right nobody knows what I am talking about 😀
很棒的設計,我8月初到加拿大Vancouver Island去跳島划船就能好好來使用這個袋子了。另外建議一下你們錄影時使用外掛麥克風,這樣拿取的雜音比較不會突然因為收音的關係變得很大聲。
Just ordereres one literally an hour ago!! Can wait to get it!! Masterpiece
The only “defect” I can find in this is the fact that it interferes with accessing the kayak’s day pod which, as shown here as well, sits right below the deck pod. Would it still be possible to open the day pod to be able to take advantage of its space as well? Other than for this doubt, I really like this product.
Very sleek! I’m using the Akiak and would love to try the Kalleq
If GearLab ever comes out with a GP with an oval loom, shoulderless or nearly so, I will part with my money. The blades and tips are on point, and the joint is secure. Buddy is going on two years or so and they hold up great it looks like. Can we please get a model with an ovaled loom? Just build it up a little... interior joint can still be round.
The IPIK is coming soon with an oval loom.
I’ve been told that it’s more a mental battle than a physical challenge when learning to roll. Do you think I’ll become too reliant on this float if I use it to begin with?
Great product. I got 2
Hi! Did you get this float to learn to roll? If so, how was the transition from using it and then without it?
@@Fishaholicboy still working on it and the water got pretty cold here so I stopped. I practiced for about 6 hours before stopping for the winter and my snaps and sweeps got much better towards the last practice, even with reduced air. I got two so I could alternate sides. I will post after I transition to rolling.
