A Sense of Travel with Michael Matheny
United States
Приєднався 16 січ 2012
Welcome to A Sense of Travel! I'm Michael Matheny, and I'm on a mission to document all 5 senses (the sights, sounds, tastes, feels, and smells) of as many cities, countries, and natural wonders around the world as I can so that I can immerse you into the experience virtually.
Here, you'll find my full length travel vlogs, videos showcasing the best foods in the regions I've explored, videos documenting the scents that would make up a location-based candle, color palette reels, and more.
I'm excited to share this passion with you, and can't wait to bring you along with me as I travel the world.

Must-Try Foods in Honolulu, Hawaii! 🌺 | Tastes of the World
When I was in college we would put a cigarette in the top hatted gentleman's mouth lol. We called him token Joel 😂
Excellent video - you did a great job covering a city I grew up nearby and have loved for over 50 years.
"London - the capital of the world?" You need to travel sir, outside your bubble.
With all due respect, I have traveled to 30 countries on five continents thus far
I am Lithuanian. You missed the UZUPIS Cocstitution on a wall
Toronto, the city of unaffordable housing.
From a 70 year old native, Michael, I can tell you that so many of the beautiful scenes you displayed are the result of a lot of struggle and effort through the years. When I was a child, downtown was the where you went for everything -- Belk's, Penny's, Woolworth's -- all the shops. But by the time I was in college, the effect of suburbs and malls had decimated downtown, and it was a boarded-up fossil. Even when I was working as a nurse at the old General hospital, South Main was a dark and risky place. I went to work over the Camperdown bridge, which had been built OVER the gorgeous falls on the Reedy River, and what the bridge didn't obscure, the kudzu and briars covered. But with the pioneering work of Democratic mayor Max Heller, through to the work of longtime Republican Mayor Knox White, and multiple citizen organizations like the Clemson Master Gardeners and Upstate Forever, Greenville has become the Wonder on the Reedy that you're showing today. But it takes constant vigilance to keep the balance between positive growth and rampant overdevelopment, which is something we're definitely dealing with now. Thanks for the wonderful video -- just don't make us too popular! 🙂
@melaniephillips4238 im 40 and have lived here all my life. Went to school at wade hampton and furman. If you didn't buy your home by 2010 you likely never were able to. I feel a great sadness for these kids today that just won't even have the opportunity for the American dream 😞
@@AlanRipman You're right about that! I have certainly seen exactly what you're talking about. We've lived near the end of Pelham Road where my parents bought 60 years ago; it was once very rural but is no longer. My adult children and other young professionals I know are even having trouble affording housing. And that's why I worry about more rampant overdevelopment and poor planning.
This is an interesting take for any travel blog and I really liked it. You capture much of the essence of London that nothing else I have seen so far does. I'm from Wisconsin and live in Chicago but have been to London 80+ times and never tire of it. In fact, I am off to England on Monday, spending Christmas with an old client, now friend, and her family out in Suffolk. Then back to London to hang out with friends for three nights. I can't wait. As you quote, "When a man is tired of London, they are tired of life' and I really do believe that. Nice job with the video.
cool video!
Well Done & Nice Video ! Have You ever heard of music by DARUDE - SANDSTORM - filmed at DOWNTOWN ? There are many that come with their ferris from Stockholm Sweden or Tallinn Estonia - as they do regonize the The White Church by The Senate Square ! As soon as You watch IT - You see how everything looks at summer time !
This is a really fantastic summarisation of both cities. It was so useful for me in deciding which city to visit (first). Thank you!
Your presentation is really very attractive and amazing. I really love your presentation! However, I think your video should get more exposure and I guess I can help you with that. Can we discuss further?😊😊
How many British people cringed and Scottish felt out and out anger when he talks about Arthurian legends when in Scottland. Arther thr mythical King who created England The name is more likely to come from Ard-na-Said a Gaelic phrase meaning Hight of the Arrows
Great! I've lived here for 64 years. This is the cleanest and most American city. Great food, museums and culture.
I will love this video better if vegan food is introduced as well, as London is one of the best cities for vegan food.
One of the only cities we have that is worth visiting
ok where do I start firstly I'm Irish I live in Dublin, u have made more then a few classic mistakes so please don't take offence as I try to correct you. Cottage pie is English the Irish variant is Shepard's pie and its made with ground lamb instead of ground beef. fish and chips is English you are correct but we do it better then they do. you should have tried Scampi its particularly a Dublin thing but worth trying. we don't really eat Guinness stew that's just a tourist thing we just have stew which is the same as you had just doesn't cost you 20$. North Atlantic salmon isn't Irish either originates from Norway and again we don't drown everything in Guinness that's just for tourists. finally your brekki bap?? never ever in my 40 years have I heard anyone call it that. if you go into any convivence store in Ireland spar centre circle K you will find a simple Breakfast roll on the menu prices range from 5-10$ and it will look much better then what you got I'm afraid. finally your full Irish breakfast? seemed more like a half Irish breakfast so for clarification let me just say that a full Irish is 2 sausage, 2 bacon, black and white pudding (we dont call it blood sausage), 2 fried or scrambled eggs, mushrooms and fried tomatoes. Finally pronunciation Kilkenny (Kill-Ken-e) sorry again for ranting over your video but it was hard to watch as an Irish person without cringing. next time you come please try to branch out of the city and or tourist zones the food will be much better.
I loved your vlog-it was the best travel vlog I have ever seen. The information you provided in the vlog was a feast for all sensory organs. I could feel what it was like to be there. the smell of the atmosphere you described...the food..the visuals..sound of cropping birds... Just amazing...
Super helpful breakdown of the topic.

love the concept of the senses
So grateful that London is right on my doorstep. From my front door a lot of the iconic places you've shown are between 30-45 mins away. Boy do I take that for granted! Thank you for an excellent video. I like your style of presenting 👌
Sound recording needs to be improved. 🎉
The buildings are mostly Georgian, not Victorian, but there are some Victorian, and others from earlier and later eras. The more ornamental buildings are more likely to be Victorian. The Georgian houses are beautiful but a more elegant less fussy style. The grand Georgian civic buildings are fancy though.
I'm a lifelong (70 years) Torontonian. We have our share of problems, but it is nice to see our city anew through a stranger's eyes. It really is a great place to live. And that "calm" aqua blue beach you saw also has surfing in the right conditions. I was there on the bluffs a few years ago during Covid on New Year's Day. It was below freezing but the wind was up and there were a dozen or more surfers taking advantage,
Sense of Travel, drop the other words. Clean.
Both look great but I personally think I would like the vibe of Prague more
Visited Edinburgh in October this year, and instantly fell in love with the city. <3
Your video is too good. But something is missing.thats why didn't get views.
You moved from Greenville to DC for what? I grew up and NOVA and there's no way I'd ever go back. In Charleston, SC now and it's overpopulated with heavy traffic and isn't even half as bad as NOVA/DC area. I've been offered jobs at the Pentagon and told them they'd have to pay me 7 figures to even consider living there
Although, at the time I visited (2010), the Pirates were woeful, I took in two games at PNC Park. I've got to say, it's the finest ballpark I've ever been to. And hey, the Bucs were so bad that I had no trouble at all getting tickets!
This is a great tour video. I think you captured some of what other videos miss in terms of charm and personality.
Thanks! And agreed, Pittsburgh has a really strong sense of “place” that you don’t get as much in big American cities these days. I hope it’s able to keep that feeling!
I wish I was independently wealthy so I could live in Pittsburgh. Great video!
Thank you! And agreed. One of the beautiful old houses on the hillside overlooking town would be incredible
@asenseoftravel I think Pittsburgh is the greatest city in the US. Agree?
I think it definitely has the bones to be. A beautiful setting, all four seasons, great universities and healthcare, incredible sports - if Pittsburgh had a stronger public transit system and got a bit of a population rebound, it could easily be the best city in the country!

Haggis is the pluck (minced) of a sheep with onions, oatmeal, herbs and spices cooked in the sheep's stomach traditionally... Now many are cooked in an artificial casing. (Pluck: heart, liver, and lungs). Some Scots will add a dram of whisky to the minced pluck.
I'm surprised you did not mention St Margaret's Chapel (a former Queen of Scotland known as Alba at that time) in Edinburgh Castle. The oldest building in Edinburgh.
Arthur's Seat is a hill not a mountain. Take a trip to the Highlands to walk up a Scottish mountain. Try Ben Lomond, the southern most Munro in Scotland. About 1 to 2 hours drive from Edinburgh. Great views.
Thank you for the video. As a resident of Tallinn, it’s both interesting and pleasant to hear impressions from someone "from the outside." Often, they are even better than my own and make me see my city in a new light.
We love this! Thank you for showcasing our city in the most perfect way. We're grateful for you. 💚💚💚
Greenville really is a special place, and the world deserves to know! 💚
Excellent vlog Michael. I love all the yellow and the excitement in your voice about this city is contagious. Thanks for sharing! 👍
Glad you felt the excitement! There’s a fun energy in Pittsburgh
Yuengling is the best American beer. Fight me
Espeeeeecially their Hershey’s Chocolate Porter 🍻
Canadian here. I've got to agree. Whenever I'm in the cities of the American eastern seaboard, it's Yuengling for me. I first tasted it, fittingly, on a trip to Pittsburgh. All you Yinzers out there, please give my regards to Brewski's, my favourite bar in town.
Here we go! 💛🖤💛🖤
A Steelers paradise, that’s for sure!
Ok well now I need to go!
Heck yeah you do!
This is such a cool concept for a series! It really immerses you compared to the hypercut videos showing just visual highlights. Well done!
Thank you Allie!
Hello, mem. I’ve been following your UA-cam channel for quite some time now and love watching your videos. They’re always engaging and incredibly well-presented. Best wishes to you!
I'm really glad you enjoy them! I have some exciting videos planned for the near future, so stay tuned!
@@asenseoftravel Your video making is good. Also, your video thumbnail is very attractive. But I found some problem in your UA-cam channel. I am waiting for your reply Freelancer Jakir Hossen
I fell asleep. This background music with narration feel like animated wikipedia. It's just super boring. And you talked about the sounds instead of just letting your viewers listen to what it's like. It's like a documentary from one of the news channel, too sterile.
I'm sorry to hear this, but I do appreciate your honest feedback!
... On the flip side: chilled, well spoken and articulated. Which I appreciate in a time when people have no patience.
YOU KNOW SOMETHING. WINTER'S COLDEST MONTH IS JANUARY. AND THERE ARE PARTS OF CANADA THAT ENJOY WARMER JANUARYS THAN GREENVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA (IN THE US DEEP SOUTH, NO LESS!). SO...WHY DON'T YOU GO?
This is the one. Yinz better watch.
