Ammonites: Fascinating fossils from the sea
Ammonites are an extinct group of cephalopods that populated the Earth's oceans from the Devonian to the Cretaceous Period, around 350 million to 65 million years ago. They were extremely successful and developed an enormous variety of forms with over 1,500 known genera and 30,000 to 40,000 species. Their spiral-shaped shells, which come in different sizes and shapes, are now sought-after fossils and bear witness to the marine world's ancient biodiversity.
Anatomy and lifestyle
Ammonites were molluscs that lived in a spiral-shaped shell made of aragonite. The enclosure was divided into chambers, the last of which was inhabited by the animal. The chambers were filled with gas that helped the animal swim in the sea. Ammonites had tentacles that they used to catch prey and powerful jaws for crushing food.
Transportation and nutrition
Ammonites were active hunters who moved through the seas. They used their tentacles to catch small sea creatures such as crabs and fish. The food was then crushed with the jaws and digested in the intestines.
Fossil finds and significance
Ammonites are often preserved as fossils because their aragonite shells were easily mineralized. They can therefore be found in many parts of the world and form important index fossils for dating rock layers. Ammonite discoveries allow paleontologists to reconstruct the evolution of ammonites and environmental conditions in the past.
Importance in culture
Ammonite fossils have captured the human imagination for centuries. Their spiral-shaped casings were often used as jewelry or amulets. In various cultures they have also been associated with deities and mythological beings.
Ammonites today
Today, ammonites are extinct, but their fossils remain an important field of research for paleontologists. They give us insights into the past marine world and remind us of the incredible biodiversity that once existed on our earth.

Sea urchins are a group of echinoderms that evolved about 540 million years ago in the Cambrian period. They are found in all of the world's oceans, from the Arctic to the Antarctic, and live in a wide range of habitats, from the coast to the deep sea. The earliest sea urchins were probably small, shellless animals that fed on plankton. Over time, they evolved into larger, armored animals with ...
