You can wield weapons aside from the staff in Dragon age origins and be a melee mage I do it all the time. Granted wield other weapons does slightly affect cast time but the damage output is better then what most staffs can do.

So, in the area you are about to enter at the end of the video, there actually IS a method of fast travel. There should be an npc standing right next to the lift that doesn’t lead to the refrigerator. You can go down that lift and it will take you back to where you talked to Venus, you can also guide that same method to get back. Hope this helps, I tried to keep it spoiler free
