I recently picked up two different sets of speakers, and was quite surprised to see how similar they were. The Allied Nova 7 and the Realistic Optimus-1, both from from the 1973 Radio Shack catalog line-up, appear to use identical drivers, in an identical configuration. But once you open them up and dig deeper, you learn how different they are. This video takes you thru those points as we compl...

New2U Speakers Channel Introduction. Find out What We Do, How, and Why.
I read a review of these speakers by Julian Hirsch ( Stereo Review ) and went to a Radio Shack that was closing and paid $ 400. for the pair and they are still going strong( bought in 1998, I think. Love the Linneum tweeters/ added an Onkyo 100 watt sub and a couple of Kef Qi50 bookshelf for surround and love my system.
That was a lot of money back then, but I think you’ve gotten your moneys worth by now. They are a great speaker and very underrated. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Greetings: Great Video. Q: Can the Active Speaker bypass the BT & Power to ALSO be used as a passive speaker using a switch or hardwire? Thanks, 🐜
Yes, if you are handy and able to understand the basic internal wiring, there’s no reason you couldn’t turn this into a switchable device that could work just as you described. You’d need to drill some holes to mount the switch and reroute and re-configure some of the wiring, and add some wiring, but it could be done. Thanks for watching and commenting.
the best you can do is to order the network parts from GR research. Then you have the correct frequency divider! The original one is crap from the factory...I don´t understand people who buy these old icons, and let the crappy divider side. That´s the first you must change. It´s like buying an old Porsche, and letting the 60-year-old tires on it! Pretty dumb, isn´t it ?
Yes, Danny does a great job with his upgrades. In this case, my customer decided he wanted to keep them original , so that’s what we did. “The customer is always right”. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Next time, ask the customer about the Porsche story. Comparing the car industry makes people more likely to listen to reasonable arguments.
Why not put the seam on the bottom of speaker
Yes, that makes total sense. The port on the speaker is actually at the top. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I have never built nor even repaired/modified/restored a speaker (I don’t even know how to properly solder electronic components); nevertheless, I find your videos fascinating. Keep ‘em coming!
@@ts6640 That’s the plan. I’m glad you can spend a few minutes of your time to learn and enjoy. UA-cam is an amazing tool. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I have two of flat square woofers one is sony apm and the other is pioneer fs. I agree they sound good but still they have disadvantages .
No doubt. Thanks for watching and adding your personal comments.
94 DB sensitivity! Wow that is impressive. Definitely would need a small 6.5 inch powered sub to run with these being the only go down to 70 hertz but bet with a sub or subs would sound great!
@@VintageGearMan yes, subwoofers can augment just about any two-way speaker on the market with impressive results. It’s an excellent solution/improvement. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Nice job!
Thanks for watching, I hope it inspires you to try it!
I would love to see a factory video on how they do this during manufacturing. That would be really interesting.
I’m sure there’s a video somewhere out there.
Looks great and as you mentioned just a few dollars and some basic things you'd have around the house gets the job done with impressive results. Nice work.
I'm glad you liked it! I hope it inspires more people to give it a shot. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I have a pair of the 10's in excellent condition. I had a pair of the book shelf speakers, but sadly, they are gone. I still rock them occasionally in my basement setup. I purchased them because of the reviews at the time. I also have the matching cs 5 center channel speaker with a lineum tweeter centered between small mid drivers. These were all part of my original 5.1 av system .
It’s great to hear that you still enjoy them. I have another video on the LX5 bookshelf’s that I also refurbished. You can check that out. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I like scott, got 2 - s15.
Very nice. They sound so smooth. Thanks for watching and commenting.
altec lansing lost its glory in the present times . i bought an altec lansing 621 in the year 2005 . i still have them after 20 years . Solid stuff . I cant find decide wheter to replace them or not . If you have suggestions , let me know thank you
If you are using a single listening position primarily, they should be just fine. Some people have luck changing the polarity on them for improved sound because the Tweeter is wired reverse compared to the woofer. Try that. It might make an improvement. Thanks for watching and commenting.
The pros use a butyl rubber compound I think for a longer lasting repair, for paper cones etc. Doesn't necessarily look the best, but works great apparently. Ideally you want a glue type that is flexible and will remain so. If you epoxy that sets hard it you might just spread cracking to new areas.
I have a pair of harmon speakers with that style tweeter .it stopped working I took it apart after watching you oiled it and it works great.thank you.
I’m so glad you had that fantastic result. UA-cam is an amazing tool for all of us to be able to learn from and benefit from. Thanks for watching and giving your feedback.
One of the most popular Videoton speaker was Videoton DC 2050E. Great work!
I just looked those up and I suspect they sound quite nice. I’d certainly consider buying them, but I don’t think there’s many pairs floating around at this point. Thanks for watching and commenting.
One other question exactly for this specific Paradigm tweeter what could I use to put an in line tweeter protection on these tweeters? I would just feel better having it. Original replacement used tweeters are terrible expensive. I hope to hear from you. I did subscribe. Thanks.
You can always add protection to the crossover, but it will change the sound. Something else to consider is a nearly drop in replacement from Midwest Speaker that is available. They sound a bit different, but are well designed and will last under high load. Thanks for watching and commenting. Good luck! They are fantastic Speakers.
@@new2uspeakers I will check in with Midwest Speaker and try this repair. At least I would still have back up tweeters. It is a shame that Paradigm does not keep back up NOS tweeters for such nice speakers. I looked over their new line of tower speakers but they look cheaply made compared to my 80, Ver. 2's So happy I found these speakers on line a few weeks ago. I still have never seen aluminum dome tweeters disintegrate before. Mine just fell apart. Wild. Roger on sound change if I add tweeter protection. I guess I will forget that idea and just be careful with them. A good used set of tweeters set me back $175.00 bucks. Ouch! Thanks for your help.
Could use something besides super glue so you have more time to line things up?
Yes, you can and probably should. And I think there are a couple of other techniques that should be used to do this procedure more precisely. I’m actually going to make another video in the future to talk about how to do that when I have another pair of failed tweeters that need the diaphragms replaced.Voice coil alignment in a Tweeter is just as important as it is in a woofer driver so concentric set up is critical.
Wow this is my exacting tweeter I have. Same model numbers. I may try this down the road.
Don’t do it unless you have a problem, it’s very tricky work. Enjoy your Speakers while you have them. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Just bought a beautiful pair of Paradigm Reference Studio 80 Ver.2 speakers yesterday however the tweeters domes looked a bit dented etc on both speakers. Warmed them up for awhile last night and then ran them pretty loud. Looked at the tweeters this morning and the aluminum domes were literally falling a part. Has to be an age thing. Thought about doing this repair but found a original pair in great shape so I ordered them. They were a bit pricey though. Anyone in here ever seen aluminum dome tweeters fall apart like this before?
I’m not sure what “fall apart” means, but if the domes came detached from the plastic plate that they are mounted to then that’s a tricky repair to get corrected. Replacement OEM tweeters are one choice, but as you said, they are expensive. These tweeters are a high failure rate item so don’t be surprised if you have another failure in the future.
ive been rocking LX-7s as my dailies for 25 years, love em. picked them up after they went discontinued at the radio shack i worked at in '99 for ~$50CAN. theyve only gotten better with every amp upgrade over the years and sound wicked in my newest 5.1.2 setup.
I’m glad the video brought back both some old , and recent memories for you. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Wow amazing explanation, thank to show us history
I’m glad you enjoyed the video and the story. Thanks for watching and commenting.
HiVi sells replacement woofers that beat the weakness of the factory woofer. Use Van Wormers 12 dB cross-over modification. Really improves the sound.
Since I still have these around, I’m going to check into your suggestions. thanks so much. And thanks for watching and commenting! If the results are as satisfying as you have experienced , I may post an update to the video

@@new2uspeakers I have some Realistic Optimus speakers I can let go. I have the mod X-overs too
Thank you for this extensive look into these speakers and KLH in general! I have been on the search for a pair of nice vintage speakers as I have been using a cheap and thin sounding small set of book shelf speakers and needed to upgrade. I by chance found a pair of these today for $125 and went for them! I have not got to listen to them yet, but can confirm that the speakers are all original. Lots of helpful information here!!
I have no doubt that you will enjoy them. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Lineaum is very nice indeed 👍
No doubt. Thanks for watching and commenting!!
I did enjoy this. I have a pair in working order. Not bad visually either. I agree they do sound great. With an added blutooth adapter feeding them, I use them in my hobby room with the phone. I'll have another go at pulling out my dented tweeter too. I did some but didn't quite get it all. Opinion on painting the domes with some clear lacquer to harden up that dome ? May e I'll make a wire grill to protect the domestic under the fabric...Anyway, thanks !
I bought a pair of R.S. Opimus linaem tweeters in the Brockport ny store when they were clearing them out, still have them.
I rescued 2 pair a neighbor sat next to the dumpster years ago, glad he was unable to pitched them in and rather sat them on the ground next to it. I re-foamed all 4 and they are still around. I thought about possibly just pulling the tweeter and using it like a super-tweeter on a franken-speaker but decided against it, the highs are rather mellow from these as I remember.
I’m glad the video brought back some nice memories for you. I enjoyed the speakers and to me those tweeters were the highlight. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Nice job and glad you found the original Tweeter looks better with the right one and they sound nice for their age!
@@Jammerk40 yes, the more I thought about it, it would be an injustice not to spend money. Glad you watched to the end and thank you for watching and commenting.
Would have liked to hear music playing through them!
Yes, thanks for the reminder. I need to remember to make sure to do that on these various repair videos.
I thought they were all walnut. I believe mine were built in 1969 in walnut veneer. 1990 were taken out of the garbage and I outfitted them with a huge American made pyle 40 ounce magnet 2 inch voice coil woofer and then I use the bandsaw and trim down the outstanding Motorola powerline piezoelectric tweeter which was available at the time I’m fitting it to the case of mine can handle about 400 W apiece and they get extremely loud but of course ., Not quite audiophile Course I was a lot younger 34 years ago when I restored them
I’m glad my video brought back some good memories for you. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Hello dave, I have a Pioneer CS - 803 with a ripped midrange, (only one) a Bose Accoustimass with no coil, and a Sansui 55CD R speaker with a broken speaker
The Pioneer CS-803 is a fun speaker. Sounds like you need some repair support for your collection! If you are local to Stuart, FL or Rochester, NY I can probably help you out. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Great work on that corner!
Thanks, those little touchups are very rewarding to me for some odd reason. Thanks for watching and commenting!
I removed the tweeter plate, flipped them upside down, shoved memory foam down the ports to seal it, It gives them a much tighter bass then added silk dome tweeters where the port hole is, I put the tweeter plate back on, The silk dome Coupled with the ribbon added to the detail of the highs, they are technically upside down now but It definitely improved the sound, I have them set at 70 HZ with an Optimus 10 inch powered Sub, LX 5s for surround and the Pro X77 for center, This is my Bedroom Setup and it sounds Amazing! I would love to own another pair of these but my wife cut me off from speakers 😔 I have a problem
Sounds like you have no shortage of creative ideas. Good Luck on the obstacle in your quest. Thanks for watching and commenting!!
What is the advantage of turning them upside down? I'm looking at a pair for sale near me and I am not familiar with this type of tweeter.
Hello, What is the size of the speakers?
I’m sorry I can’t answer your question. I have sold these speakers so I no longer have them in hand. My guess is somewhere around 13 inches high,12 inches deep and 3 1/2 inches wide for each one . I believe you may be able to find some other specs if you go online and do some searching. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I have the LX-8s and they are great speakers!!
I just refurbished and sold a pair of the LX-5 which is the little brother of your LX-8. I ve never had a piar of those , but I would be a proud owner if I could find a pair. The woofers in them are supposed to complement the Linaeum tweeters quite well. Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@new2uspeakers yeah, this is my second pair; I blew out the tweeters playing Janet Jackson Rhythm Nation probably 20 years ago and I was sick about it! Lol! I happened to find another pair online and they are still great speakers. I originally paired them with the Optimus Sub which would go down to 20Hz and that was a great combo for music and home theater. I still have to replace the sub which deteriorated.
Hi man, a friend had a pair of Altec Lansing model 994 speakers in his cellar, I bought them, they sound wonderful, I can't find any information online, can you tell me in which year they were built, and how much they are worth today? Thanks
994 is usually the model number of the horn in a large "Voice Of The Theater" big box speaker. If that is what you have it is hard to date it. If you have a complete pair of Voice of the Theater speakers that are in working condition, they can be quite valuable. They are large, so their are typically not many people that can use them in a home situation. Take some photos and post on AudioKarma.org and you will get good feedback. Thanks for watching and commenting.
More overhead lighting. Lots of shadows.
Yes, seems you can never get enough light. Thanks for the tip and for watching and commenting.!
Does the hot glue ever rip the dust cap? I'd be scared to try that method, but it looks like it worked really well. Thanks for the video 👍
I’ve been doing it for many years with this method and have not had a problem. You’ll find other references online to it as well. However, there are different strengths of Hot melt glue. And I use the cheapest crafty style sticks I have found. I do have other stronger ones I use for fishing rod tip, repairs, and other high strength applications. Thanks for watching and commenting.
@@new2uspeakers I'll give it a try at some point, thanks 👍
Fun to mess with, for sure. Thanks for showing us the insides,
Yes, the inside sometimes have a mystery that doesn’t exist on the outside. There’s always a lot to learn. Thanks for watching and commenting!
At least ESS labs are still around. American-made speakers with unmatched clarity for the price.
i have something very similar called a Rhapsodie that was made in 1970
@@larryshaver3568 yes, I have a Rhapsodie Model 12-1470 sitting on my shelf and up for sale right now on Facebook marketplace that is in perfect condition and works beautifully. they are just simple fun. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I had a pair of 6x9 speakers back in the day that was just awesome ..❤miss them speaker
If you had the “voice of the highway” car speakers from the mid 80s, those were some of the highest quality sets that were ever made for cars. No such quality/capability these days for a reasonable price. Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@new2uspeakers Best pair of 6x9's I ever had were the Pioneer TS 6905's They were monsters!
So sad what Altec has become, just a brand being an extreme shadow of its former self. 🤔😢
@@sand0077 Unfortunately, the list of audio companies with a similar history and trajectory is quite long. Thanks for watching and commenting!
I’d love to find a pair of ESS speakers out in the wild. Don’t seem to be too many of them in my areas. Thanks for watching and commenting. I have a set of KLH model sixes that I’m working on which should make for a nice video soon.
Fortunately, KLH had a renaissance and they sound amazing. ESS Labs is going strong and they have the clarity of speakers that are more than 10x the price, and better yet they are still manufactured in the USA. I wanted Focal Scala Utopia EVO but, ESS Labs AMT-1D will change my mind.
I remember Altec Lansing's speakers in the 70's had what they termed 'dynamic force' woofers that boasted 17 pound magnet structures.
If you have one of those in the garage, the basement the attic, etc., pull it out and give it a new life. They’re very desirable. Thanks for watching and commenting!
I noticed two different woofers! Hmm
Good eyes-Good catch! At some point in the past, one of the originals was replaced by a Realistic 40-1016 which was a comparable choice. It turns out I need to refoam it since it was NG. I didn’t think it impacted the theme of the video, so I didn’t mention it. Thanks for watching and commenting!
How many coats of glue do you do?
One coat of glue is all that is needed. This is because the glue penetrates the paper fibers and becomes part of the cone. An extra coat of glue on top won’t add any more structure to the cone. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Wish I still had mine.... great job 👍
I suspect everyone has that pair they wish they had hung onto- It’s just the way it is. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Mine must be 7Bs. They have a gray woofer with some type of treatment around the dust cap and the tweeters are lined up. I added a true tweeter with a 1st order filter and added a small inductor to the two factory tweeters so that they function as mids. They sound great with vinyl
It’s fun to play around with your gear and make changes so that YOU like the sound. It’s a worthy goal to be able to enjoy them. Thanks for watching and commenting!
