D DAY IDC219462
Having had the privilege of working at Library & Archives Canada as a Senior Film Conservator, I was able to view many of the films regarding Canada's history during WWII and Korea. In my effort to locate films that could possibly have been used by a 16mm Bell & Howell camera, I came across this film: [D-Day] IDC 219462

Cool to see Jack Nissan there. I believe James Leasor made him the focus of his book on Dieppe, “Green Beach”.

Thank you @mithridateseupator3492 for the comment - Richard Tomkies was very passionate about the topic of Dieppe and did a good job of doing interviews with those that were there. Dale.

Great work Dale! Am I wrong in thinking the colour film attachment to the “25th Brigade in Korea” film, the one you say probably comes from the RCN, was used in the recent CBC bit about DDay? If so, I was thinking that the film’s description of attributing it to DDay is wrong. To me the scenes look like they were taken during Operation Fabius, the practice landing, that occurred in May 44. They are very reminiscent of the photos that Gilbert Milne took for Fabius, but it looks like they were taken from a different LCI so it can’t be him. All in all another excellent production Dale!

Hi @mithridateseupator3492, thanks for the comment - I believe you are correct regarding the 'DDay' footage - another colleague has also indicated it must be a practice landing. I will be collecting all these comments and submitting these to Library & Archives Canada to possibly have this information added to the database. Like myself, CBC used the same material because well, you just never know, and makes for good TV ; )

So we have a Ram tank (never used in battle) and a landing exercise in Southern England. Interesting propaganda footage but not exactly "Invasion Europe", eh ?

The vehicles were all provided by private collectors or the Swords and Ploughshares Museum of Kars, Ontario. Many of the background folks in the crowd were Dutch Canadians and/or the descendants of Canadian liberators and liberated Nederlanders. One lady in the crowd is an octogenarian who met the Canadians as a little girl!❤

Survival skills would determine your fate for sure. With no modern technology or gear these guys are the definition of toughness. Nice film
