I disagree. GORE-TEX lining doesn't last, isn't even that water-resistant after a few years and is bad for the environment, Plus the outsole is volcanised on, meaning that it's very hard/impossible to repair. I would look at more traditional offers at this price like Jim green.
Be forewarned. The Numzaan is thick, heavy, and a hard break in. Your feet will hurt. My personal experience is that Jim Green leather really likes mink oil. Apply several coats of oil when the boot is new. It will help soften the leather for breaking in. Then add a few coats of wax polish to help bead of moisture.
I'm familiar with that from breaking in my PNW Logger boots; I'm sure the double-layer of leather (which Jim Green calls "Double Lasted") makes the Numzaan even harder to break in, but it also makes it insanely durable. I used coconut oil for the logger boots break-in and it worked great. Waterproofing not really an issue with that pair.
Waiting to see what you think of these. 👍🏽
Since I am just a day hiker I think these are overkill... Took a long time to break in (50'ish miles) and are still a little too tight, on the top of my foot when laced up completely. I think I prefer ankle boots as I hike mostly in moderate temps and rarely get into muck. 8" or 10" is perfect if your up North. When i was living in Canada i loved wearing my 8" Redwing boots with 400 grams of Thinsulate, but those are just too warm for southern latitudes and/or low altitudes.
@@GrassRootsOpinionsI’ve had issues with that top piece in the Malaku and Karakoram being to tight and them taking forever breaking. These may be too much for backcountry hunting. Thanks for putting in the work!
how flexible are they?
1-2 or AB on that Schedule. Stiffer than a trail runner... Good on sharp rocks.
Interesting presentation and you seem to know your stuff. I use almost exclusively trail runners or other sneakers but I still have a pair of Scarpa and a pair of Asolo full leather but fairly light boots. I was into long distance backpacking for a while and was surprised to see many full leather boots not lasting much longer than a pair of good quality sneakers. Don't remember the boot brands or models that broke though, but a friend with a pair of fairly heavy duty Merrells used them for the whole AT without any problems. Bought a pair of lighter Merrells but they didn't hold up at all. Took a look at Merrell's site now and it was nothing left of the old quality boots they had earlier. I usually got around 500 miles from a pair of sneakers on the AT and PCT with a weight of 200-220 pounds (me and full loaded pack). Personally I don't like to mix full leather and Gore-Tex. I know it's very common, but to me leather treatment clash with Gore-Tex-treatment. Also, durability of leather should be much better than Gore-Tex, particularly in boots. I'm not against Gore-Tex - I use it in everything else, including shoes which I don't expect to last longer than the Gore-Tex. Btw, I'm curious about which US brands you consider high quality.
Merrell is not a good quality boot anymore; I'm not sure when they cheaped out on their construction and started riding completely on their reputation but that is what happed. Scarpa and Asolo are both really good quality, at least in their Boots. Trail runners, where the construction is often outsourced are a whole other discussion. Some of the high-end boot manufacturers make lower quality trail running shoes, often manufactured in China.
I have loved these. Perfect fit at my heel better than any other boot. Rate the tread pattern highly. They started separating between the grey midsole and tread. And I was bummed they don't have a full rand. Have ordered the alaska pro (non insulated) should arrive soon but I wish they had the same tread pattern as the tatra.
Great review! Do they come with an removeable insole? Have a great day!
Yes, they come with Jim Green one which you can replace with a reasonably thick 3rd party insole if you like.
@@GrassRootsOpinions thank you!
In the video i mentioned that the Kilties made "no sense" to me, well on further consideration they make a ton of sense for improving the fit of the boot by spreading out the tongue of the boot over the top of your foot/ankle and protecting the tongues integrity from lace abrasion, especially relevant if you use Kevlar laces which are very abrasive. All that said, most Kilties (including the ones that came w/these boots) are not long or wide enough to do their job properly. If they were they would also have to me trimmed down to your leg/ankle size for the ultimate fit. I'm planning on getting some veg-tanned mid-sole leather and doing exactly that. I will report back on the results...
Botach tactical has this grey and black that you're showing and the all black. If you buy two pairs, they are 29.99 a pair. Thanks for the review!
If I saw that a boot that was claimed to be maid in Portugal, Spain but was made in China, I’d send them back for a refund.
Thank you so much for this! There really is no info about these right now so it's much appreciated. Definitely keep us updated!
I've got about 125 miles on them now; Since I am just a day hiker I think these are overkill... Took a long time to break in (50'ish miles) and are still a little too tight, on the top of my foot when laced up completely. I think I prefer Ankle boots as I hike mostly in moderate temps and rarely get into muck. 8" or 10" is perfect if your up North. Retail Price MSRP, on Hanwag web site, is actually $400 currently...
A good-looking boot. Especially for a leather boot under 100 bucks. It's a great looking, affordable, casual, everyday wear.
I purchased that exact model. I ordered a half size down from my Brannock size and they fit perfectly. I've already walked a few miles in them with no noticeable break in period. Very comfortable boots. It appears to be a stitchdown to the midsole. Not glued. However, I only paid CAD $101 shipping and duty included. SO if the sole wears out, I probably won't repair them. But I expect they'll last a long time.
Forgot to mention that the Double Lasted (2 Complete Layers of Leather) is WARMER, just a natural consequence of having two layers of leather and a glue layer in between (which clogs some of the pores in the leather).
I *believe* the 365 series from Taft is cemented construction. But the leather isn't terrible and if its comfy, that's all that really, truly matters.
Well, if anyone knows for sure, I would like to know as detailed information online is non-existent. I do not want to misrepresent the construction quality of this boot! Also, I do care about the quality and durability of what I review. This is one of the main things i look for in a shoe or boot & if this is not a goodyear Welt & Stitch Down sole I need to revise the description and the video.
Thanks for the great comments guys & gals! 🙂 ... it took me about 50 miles to get the boots broken in. I walk 3.5 to 5 miles a day, off road mostly. Now that they are broken in i can literally wear them without socks (& do sometimes) and they feel awesome! These are by far my favorite boots ever! BTW: What kind of "OIL" do you all use to condition, waterproof and renew your boots?? I used Coconut oil to condition mine but it did make them a darker color, which was expected, especially b/c of the rough-out leather ;-) ... I will show what they look like in my 300-500 Mile Update. Just more tid-bit's: 1) These boots are heavy, over 4 pounds each or about 2X more than a mountaineering boot of the same size . I don't care about this, as a majority of my walking is to stay in shape and the "un-sprung" weight on my feet, is excellent for this purpose! 2) Mine are size 13D - ... & I am normally a size 13.5 to 14 (47.5 to 48 European). The 13D's fit me perfectly) 3) Why the PNW logger boot high heel?: In the past I've gotten sore knees and shin-splints from walking/running up & down hills. I believe these PNW high-heels protect my knees & shins from these conditions. I would love it if a Physiological Kinetics expert (... If that even exists! 🤣🤣) would weigh in on this?? The big heal definitely makes it easier to walk up hills due to the better angle of your foot. Also, the lug grips rocks, roots and logs keeping one from sliding down the hill, which saves a lot of energy, not to mention potential injuries!
Just received mine. I usually by Truman boots. It’s a much different feel than the Truman. Sizing is different too. 12.5 EE on the Truman, 12 D with Drew’s. Big difference on the footbed. Walking around for an hour you can feel the the break in. Much heavier than the Truman’s too. $300.00 is a great deal for this boot.
Just got the Kimpton. I agree their bags are good value for money
The shipping was 27.50...
What!?? How did you get a beer kouzie with yours? 🤣🤣 Love my Drew’s boots so far. Regarding the soles - I find them to be a little slippery on wet cement floors and the heel is wearing out a little faster than I expected. But I love these boots!
Beautiful boot, I just got mine 2 days ago.. I ❤ it! I recommend 2 sizes down if you like the snug fit, 1.5 size down if you need a little more wiggle room..
