Our Wheaten (3rd one we’ve owned along with another we adopted as an 8yo) is a hunter on steroids. She is not at all aggressive with other dogs (ignores them), just wants to hunt small vermin like squirrels or bigger problems, i.e., raccoons.

Ours sounds much like yours! Our boy - Winston - is about a year old it seems. Ours is a rescue as well. I don’t know if he’s a full Wheaton, but he sure looks and behaves as one! He is such a loving boy - and such a rascal at times! And oh, how he loves to chew! All of our shoes are now kept up high out of his reach! Shoes are his favorites, followed by pillows, blankets, his toys and sticks! He is a nipper (not a biter - but nipping when he’s “wound up” and wants our attention, etc.). We are working on that but if yours does this and you’ve been successful in dealing with this, I’d love your advice! He adores taking walks! We live in the woods, so he’s very happy to smell all the scents along the way. He gets a longer walk in the morning and then 4-5 shorter walks throughout the day. He is VERY interested in the squirrels, birds and deer who occupy our woods. When he’s focused on them, he’s VERY hard to distract and get “back on track.” We are working on that too! He can now sit, stay, release (to move after being told to stay), recognize his name, is house trained and sleeps quietly through the night in his crate. We are working on recall - he does amazing …until he’s distracted! We need to work on heeling and “going to his place.” He is a,ways happy to take rides in our car and frequently sleeps along the way. He’s a handful at times, but goodness, how we love him! He thoroughly enjoys being brushed and would let us do do all the time if we were willing! We, too, are seniors. We can’t imagine having him while having to go to work, etc as he LOVES to be with us and is very, very people oriented. He doesn’t like being alone, but has gotten better with that too, for short periods of time. We kept a 5’ lead on him when we first got him, but then he chewed/chews it endlessly. Any tips? This dog will eat every hour on the hour if you put food in front of him so what I do is feed him high quality foods twice a day with water and snacks he is 11 months old. He has a lot of energy so I take him hiking 🥾 twice a day he poops 💩 and pees every time. Put away your shoes 👞 because he loves to chew on everything give him a nice haircut 💇, I also bought him some really nice shoes 👠 for walking on hot pavement usually from the car to the store 🏬. Keep him on a six foot 🦶 leash if he is not in a cage the six foot leash keeps him out of trouble because he will get into trouble like I said he likes chewing on things. My dog is a rescue dog and I think he was at the pound because he chewed up some really nice stuff 😂😂😂😂. I am in complete control of everything he does I am retired so my eyes 👀 are on him 24/7 and when I am sleeping he is leashed to my coffeetable next to my sleeping spot. You know what I mean 😂😂😂😂😂. Most of the time he sleeps with me with his leash still on. 😂😂😂😂😂 he gets the message.

Yes, the can also be trained for SAR missions. My female Ori is part of our SAR Unit in our country (Slovenia). She is the first wheaten in Slovenia with SAR exam and in the unit for intervention during search operations. There were/are some wheatens in Germany with SAR exams for searchin in woods and in ruins. I don`t know any others so if anybody knows any other SAR wheatens, please share.
