I had one of these, purchased second-hand in 1988 with money from my first year tree planting. It was my big reward for 4 months of gruelling work planting the mountains of the Pacific Northwest barehand and boot screefing at average 28 cents a tree, which was fabulous money at that time, getting around 1000 into the ground each day in a 10-11 hour shift. Now the sad bit... unfortunately I set it on fire. At some point I had a party and had it cranked up and blew the left of the 3 fuses seen at 1:42. I took the middle fuse, placed it in the left socket, then wrapped the blown fuse with tinfoil and replaced it in the middle socket. I planned to replace it, but I forgot about it. 4 years later the volume control got a little bit scratchy from disuse (I had been using a mixing console to feed it and adjusting the volume there instead) so I disconnected the speakers and twisted the volume control up and down 50 times with some pressure on it, to abrade the contactors. On the 50th turn there was a loud bang, then a sweet smell, then a bitter metallic smell and smoke, then fire, and I grabbed it and put it outside on the parking lot 'til it went out... :-( Apparently you can't crank the volume without speakers attached when you've shorted that middle fuse!
HI James, Great job I have a pair of 436 in US configuration (120V) and I would like to convert them in europe (230V). Do you know what are the pins to connect /disconnect around the powersupply ?
Hello James I have two amplifiers I'm currently stripping down and cleaning can you recommend what cleaning solution you used for the printed circuit boards and also do you have the procedure for setting the correct voltage gain to minimise the build up of heat, I've ordered an infrared thermometer to check this, also how to set correct bias??
May I ask what was the repair? I have one of the same amps and it plays very well. Are there any particular area to look out for, other than tubes and the 4 big caps? Kind regards.
Hello James, great video, the serial number is quite high, but the amplifier looked to be very dirty, and the voltage gain board appears to have got very hot lots of discoloration in the PCB. I have a pair of these and one of them has recently developed an intermittent crackling sound that comes and goes, this crackling sound is present when there are no inputs connected, I assume the fault will lye somewhere on the voltage gain board. Can I ask what the fault with the amp in the video was and did you manage to fix it?
I have exactly the same fault. What was your repair to fix this or who did you find to do this repair. I have tried fixing myself by replacing the thermal sensor on each channel but no luck.
Built like a "tank"😂😂😂
Donde encuentro un control yo tengo uno y me falta el control

Problem caused from too high voltage gain~ power devices pushed too hard~heat?
look powerfull!

I have one too, great unit
