Session 92 - trimmed edit with music
Ok after being invited on a full downwind run for session 91, I thought it best not to film on this occasion.
My thoughts were justified as i was so out of my comfort zone and filming was the last thing I had on my mind.
After getting a shock into how hard down winding is, then i thought it best to try and practice these skills in relatively flat water instead of huge rolling waves.
For session 92 I picked a local route which I know very well (Dunbeg to Kelly's Pier in Taynuilt) which also meant getting through the Falls of Lora at Connel which is a first for my foil Negotiating the rapids was scary but enjoyable and despite the journey only being around 12km in a straight line, this training session was far from being straight and my estimate is more like 30km
I learned so much on my journey and I due to me messing up the tide times I was also in the water longer than expected with a total of 5 hours altogether to complete my journey home.
Really sore today but feeling good about finding out that I am the first ever person to wing foil this journey.

A special edition session as I am riding my home town bay on Christmas day. As much as i would like to have ridden here before it is usually a very busy shipping port that I tend to stay well away from but with everything shut down for Christmas it seemed rude not to take advantage of this great wind and an empty bay. Not something i can or would even like to do on a regular basis so it has mad...

My 89th session with a wing over my head and what a day it was. Managed to sneak in an hour at Ganavan beach which is around 20 minutes drive from my house. Kept the video nice and short as i think this is the best of the session but It is all pretty good so it was hard to leave some out This was my 3rd time out on my spitfire 900 and it likes to be ridden in track 2 for some reason. Any furthe...

Perhaps a foolish decision to try and ride todays wind as it was forecasting gusts of up to 60 knots but I had to give it a shot. The wind was ok for the first part of the session but then it intensified more than I could ever have imagined of so it was tuck tail and run when it picked up as i couldnt even hold the wing above the water as it was so strong. Lesson learned, more than 50 knots is ...

Session 87 was a great session as the wind was nice and clean with medium size rollers to play with so I thought his a good day to get my new Spitfire 900 out to have a play. I clicked with this foil within the first 2 runs and I have to say that I love the feeling of it. Much harder to get onto foil but once up it was a whole new game with an instant response to my movements. I have multi came...

With way more wind than I anticipated then session 86 was a tough one on my upper body. I was riding my Art pro 1121 for this session and to begin with I had it set too far back as this resulted in too much drag and my arms and chest felt the abuse after this day. Not the best camera angles today as i was struggling to hang on so filming wasn't high on my priority list for the afternoon but som...

Unfortunately despite trying very hard to foil in session 84, It just didnt happen so I didnt see the point of making and posting a video of me bobbing about so we are straight into session 85. I have returned to a familiar spot which is also my most local with this beach being only 2 minutes drive or 10 min cycle from my house in Taynuilt. To start the session I had my smaller wing out but it ...

Hello and welcome to my 82nd episode of holding a wing above my head. This was filmed on Sunday the 15th of December 2024 near Dunstafnage Marina near Oban in Argyll In Scotland The wind was really gusty and so much stronger than the forecast predicted which was 18 to 24 knots but in reality it was a 22 gusting 40 or more at times. I am riding the 1100 spitfire again as it seems to be able to t...

Merry Christmas Mike. I admire your dedication to the sport.
Hey, Thanks for supporting my channel. I love filming my adventures so the least i can do is share my antics with anyone who wants to watch me :) Merry Christmas and ive got a special edition planned for Christmas day as the ferry's are all off :) Stay tuned ...
What a cool idea with the rear cam 😮🤙
It looks good doesn't it :) I find it too unstable on the front so thought id try it backwards. Cant wait to try a speed run with it facing backwards
Yes to music 🎉
I like this cam mount point at the boards nose. Did this when Wingsurfing on my SUP back then.
Nice video 👍🏄🏼♂️
Thanks 👍
I saw that...nice job and toe side run early on
Did you spot the change in my set up?
Your getting the hang of that mate good on you niceone dudr
Love your videos! I am new to winging this year - a late start at 62 years old tho!! Keep the vids coming - I learn from watch you ride.
Thanks for watching, if you need any advice on my journey so far please ask away. I wish I had known a few things as it would have made it a little easier to learn but every session has been fun as I always learn something
NOT EASY STRAPLESS
good job Mike csnt wait to be at this level
Interesting change, your back foot is still right on top of the mast, which is too far back. When you move the mast you have to change your feet. Because, the balance point changes on the board. Try moving your back foot around forward and back to see how it changes the balance. Your back foot should be over the foil not the mast. I see you like angle your back leg down to maintain control, which is not something I have seen others do, so try moving your back foot instead.

Молодец
Thank you for sharing these videos Mike! I'm at about this level at the moment, and having spent time looking at your videos... I think I'm making the same mistake of trying to head up wind all the time. Next time I go out I'll try Stefan's tip below and head a bit down wind to build speed. Curious if that's what you found was part of the trick?
Hey, I found the key was have way more power than i thought so my 5.5 m wing did the trick. Heavier to hold but good to have the power when you need it. I ve learned so much on my journey and what I have found the most (by getting a new foil which is harder to ride that my previous one) that its all about foot placement rather than board and mast set up. I have now taken my foot straps off for my next session as I think i am struggling with too much lift due to my front foot being strapped but not in the right place for the foil im using. Moving the mast around on a medium to small board just effects the balance of the board too much so i think this is the key.
Super cool❤
hi mike what session did u actually get up and ride on the foil. thanks
It took my 10 sessions on my paddle board (to get used to the wing) then around 20 sessions on my wing board to say I was on foil for more than 2 seconds :)
@@knowlsey204 gosh that makes me feel there is still hope. thanks
General rules of thumb are bigger sq cm foil and smaller wing, or big wing big foil or smaller foil bigger wing. Bigger foils are normally better because you can use a smaller wing since most people would rather hold a small wing. Sometimes you have to use all the big stuff just to get going. Y You can start to look at higher aspect foils that accelerate quickly and provide early lift and super glide as like the F-one eagle x or Duotone Glide 2.0.
Your back foot should be over the foil not on top of the mast. Wing size is all about what you can ride. You could go out with a 6m in the same conditions, it's not really the wing. It's nice to ride smaller wings because they are easier to handle, it's more about how hard you may have to work to get up. A different foil would improve your glide, a high aspect foil will provide you tons of glide and pumping power, not shins and mast position. Mast further ahead in the tracks means more lift. Less lift move it back. Center your weight over the board, move your feet around.
Very nice! Try to keep as much speed as you can in the turn by staying sheeted in. You did that more on the regular stance but not goofy. And try not to turn the wing and/or sheet in too early on the otherside. You will get pulled over or off the board.
Hey Bro how is it going? Where is it the place you wing? Norway or Canada? You doing a good job
Hey, I am proud to live on the West Coast of Scotland
@@knowlsey204. Thanks for your reply. I am from Brazil but I live in Norway, the place you practice looks like very much like here. And I saw you wingfoiling -2 degree so it makes me think that I am not crazy going out to learn on almost on winter time. Keep up the Good vibe! Blessings
how the heck you manage to go out winging that much? do you have your stuff right away in the car all time and go afterwork?
Hey Peter, I am a self employed personal chef so I get plenty time off to play. Plus it helps to live somewhere windy such as the west coast of bonnie Scotland 😊
Your feet are way to wide. Moving the mast back .makes sense because your back foot is too far back anyway. Your back foot should be over the foil and you should try to balance the board and foil. Pick up the board from the front foil when on land to check for front to back balance You should also have been practicing S turns while going out and back to improve your turning. Your ride also looks so pitchy it's not often leveled flight and you ride too low on the mast. Just trying to give some points to consider.
is it a dry wetsuit ?
Just a 5 mm wetsuit and jacket
Great tack and jibe!
Very nice! Looks like you're getting the gybes down. One thing I would do if I were you. Don't use the back footstrap. You seem to struggle to with it. I have the same. Need to bend my backleg, to keep enough pressure on the front foot. So I only use the back-strap when going fast or when jumping. For the rest, my foot is in front of it.
Thanks for the tip :)
Dragging seaweed, thought it was slower than it should be 7:19
nice, what are your current weather conditions? Are you warm enough? :D
Currently around 10 c water temp and air temp can vary. Yesterday was around 10c but today we had our first snow fall on the high grounds so getting colder. I'm warm enough with my winter wetsuit, my 3 mm boots and my jacket but hands are starting to feel it without gloves. I'll wait as long as I can to wear them as much prefer without
That’s looks like fun! I’m contemplating getting a wing to do this at my local beach. Do you feel like the wing is distracting you from keeping the nose down? I imagine that might be what’s getting you thrown off the board.
@@mustang7ist hey this was my first time wing skimming and the wind was so strong that day I'd end up getting launched without the board. I did wreck the tail of the board on the sand though but great fun so i recommend it
Never underestimate the power of natures power... or so. brave guy doing extreme action!
I love the big winds but yesterday was too much and not that enjoyable, survival mode comes to mind 😂
You ride so low in the water. Your foil is more efficient when its closer to the surface. You should also be practicing S turns while on foil and less riding in a straight line. This will help you with your gybe. Also make your gybe longer and don't rush it
I fully agree! All the things I also did. Spent too much time mowing the lawn, too little turning. Too low on the water. Rushing to finish the gibe. For me, the gibe started to click after I spent alot of time riding as much downwind as I dared. From downwind, it's just a flick of the wing and it's done. And trusting the foil to keep gliding. And it will...!
great, the new perspectives makes the action now. Love it! Started using this and a 360 cam this year as well. It makes the whole difference 🤗
Nice angles with the new mount!
I'm curious what sort of wet or dry suit you use for conditions there? In the video it looks like a loose, comfy neoprene hoodie, or is that over a thin mil wetsuit? I'm gearing up for the winter ahead.
Hey, I've got a mystic ocean jacket over the top of my wetsuit. Works well at blocking the cold wind which means warmer and longer sessions. Not looking forward to the water cooling down though as I'll need to wear gloves again but it's around 12c at the moment
@@knowlsey204 Thanks, Mike
you may vary the mount position of your cam sometimes. For your viewers to get a better feeling for the progress you are making. anyway, you have great spots for water sports up there 😊👍
Hello Peter, Thanks for watching my videos. You are right about the camera as it gives the footage no justice of speed and height so I will put a fly mount on my shopping list as I also want to see the action that goes on. I do my first turn in the next episode so stay tuned. Happy riding, Mike
Love the vibe
Hey Mike, What's the jacket you are wearing? I'm thinking I'm going to need something like that as we head towards colder weather.
Hey, Its a Mystic Ocean jacket. Makes a massive difference as it blocks the wind and im always cosy with it on :)
@@knowlsey204 thanks Mike , I’ll look that up
Curious what size board and foil you're using there. Super smooth flights.
Hey, I have a 5ft 2 inch board that has 95litre volume. My foil is a Dakine charger 1600 with a 90 cm mast. ive had this set up since my 10th session and although it took me longer to learn to ride the benefits of a small board is now paying off especially now i have foot straps on.
Nice! Looking pretty good. Maybe time to start working on those gibes?
Hard core stoke! Enjoy following your wing sessions. Where is this…Ireland? Scotland?
I am delighted to live on the north west coast of Scotland. Thanks for watching 😊
Hello. Since you changed to biger wing, and you've been doing strapless, your progress has been remarkable.
Excellent 😊🤙 With your GoPro 1 everything looks so spectacular 😅 The lack of image stabilisation makes such a difference and enforces the image of action 😂
Hey Peter, you'll be pleased to hear that I am buying a new go pro 11 today 😊
@@knowlsey204 this is awesome 👍 What about a Flymount Aero to mount the cam to the wing?
Lucky guy about the wind conditions in the north atm. Northern Europe slows down into the summer lull 😢 Best forecast is next Sunday. Lets see. Nice shots anyway. You are making great progress and the 5.5 makes some more pressure to work with. Keep it up! 😊🤙
Thanks Peter and sorry to hear about your lack of wind. I am discovering that the north West of Scotland is AMAZING for foiling and I am very much additicted to this sport for life so the future is bright 🌞
Smooth sailing! Nice!
Your camera makes me headaches. Cant you put it somewhere stable or process it in your editing software with some image stabilisation?
Hi, unfortunately it is being filmed with my go pro 1 as I lost my new go pro 12. When I have the funds I will purchase a new one as it bothers me also especially the poor battery life.
c 'est genial tu as bien fait de perseverer
Finally progress 🤗 congratz. the new and bigger wing does the trick aye? After a long and flat learning curve you are shooting over the top! nice 🤙
Ahhh...I havent flown yet. You are inspiring me to keep trying.
nice progress
Looks like you are foiling!
getting catapulted into sand will hurt more than into water.
