Nick Drake - Cello Song (with video)
This is the video I produced to complement Nick Drake's wonderful "Cello Song", which was first broadcast on Vintage TV.
It's one of those songs that evokes great memories. Nick Drake was at Cambridge University when he wrote Five Leaves Left, the album from which "Cello Song" comes. He had lost his schoolboy interest in sport (he had been an accomplished sprinter) and preferred to stay in his college room smoking marijuana, and listening to and playing music - hence the footage of Cambridge in the late 60s. The rest of the footage reflects what was happening around the same time including the legalise pot demos and the 1969 Isle Of Wight pop festival that could so easily have been a showcase for Nick's talents, had he been less reluctant to perform live. The cello was footage was specially shot for the video. I cropped it to a 4:3 aspect ratio to match the archive footage.
Sadly after only three albums, at the tender age of 26, Nick died from an overdose of antidepressants. His melancholic style has grown in popularity hugely in recent years, and now he is a much bigger star than he ever was in his lifetime.

Full-length version of The Mole from the Ministry.
Grew up loving XTC...another great example of their genius...those who have never experienced XTC have seriously missed out...ignorance is bliss❤
As if I needed another reason to love XTC...
This band made me an XTC fan!
What a wonderful song a pastiche, tribute and classic all in one, clever and lovely. Hats off to Swindon’s finest
I wonder if The Mole from the Ministry ever though in the back of his mind "Cheese and Onions"?
Me cAnta mucho está cancion 😊👍
A Tragical Misterly Lore.
A combination of the kinks and Sydney barrett
Syd barrett
How perfectly English. ❤
JOHN LECKIE. Sound On Sound magazine May 2024 issue
XTC doing a parody is still better than most bands' serious output.
This video is more Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band than the Beatles although the song is a brilliant pastiche of I'm the Walrus with much better lyrics.
An amalgamation of 1967 Pink Floyd and the Beatles.
This is possibly more Beatlesque than the Beatles. A. Partridge is a genius.

Magical Mistery Tour
I am the eggman!
Ctx That’s what it says played backwards
My uber driver showed me this song because I had my guitar on the way to the airport, so we got talking acoustic guitar. Never heard of nick drake, and now I am obsessed with his music and this song. Talk to your Uber driver! you never know what you will discover talking to strangers.
This video gives me Arnold Layne and I am the walrus vibes at the same time.
Thxy,Nick!😘👍
Utter genius!!!
Is that the Pantomime Horse from Monty Python?

With those mole masks they were clearly having a blast channeling Alex DeLarge and his droogies, most especially the "surprise visit" scene.
My favourite corner of the XTC universe.
Why has no one mentioned how the Rutles influenced this 100%?
Problem with the movement of the 60s is they left out GOD and filled the inner hole with DRUGS… Bad combo..
The evidence that the Beatles time-travelled to 1985, listened to the Dukes, then got back to the 60s to copy their style! Quite Obvious!
Combine the Beatles (I am the walrus) and the Rutles (Piggy in the middle) and you get the Dukes of stratosphear (The mole from the ministry) the late madcap Syd Barrett would have approved
this could be perfectly a song of the Beatles on their 1967 psychedelia era and it would be one of their best , Brilliant !!!
l'ho scoperto,molti anni fa,e ,,,continua ad accompagnarmi,nella vita con le sue,,melodie👌🍷🍺💓💓
there is a great quote from paul mccartney, he was asked what it was like being in the greatest band of all time, and he replied i nust be losing me memory, i don't remember ever being in xtc.
i wish xtc made more albums like this, with this psychedelic music
Me canta esta canción mucho 😀👍
It's not lob.
Found this song by vinesauce I approve 😏👍🏼
I have always thought in the back of my mind cheese and onions
LSD feels so Wind in the Windows, Through the Looking Glass, Spamalot , The Code of the Woosters, 1066 and all That, Vile Bodies, etc. Needless to say, it is my favourite drug. But when they called me up in Tennessee saying "Tammy, stand by the JAMMS". Well, you can just imagine.
Wonderful didn't know this existed!
Love it!!! 🎼💐🌸🎹🏵🌹🎸🌺🌻🎻🌼🌷🎼
Una de las canciones más hermosas que he oído jamás
I discovered this song and Nick Drake (had never heard of him before) when I was watching the opening scenes of the movie "The Blind Side" with Sandra Bullock.. Why I had never listened before - I don't know. This time, though, I grabbed a piece of paper and a pen and wrote down as many lyrics as I could and then did a Google search. I love this song and I am off to go find out more of his songs.
beackle
Beautiful 🤩
The Rutles *wish* they were this good!
rutles are still good too though
On second thoughts let’s not go there, it is silly place……( right)!
I buried Paul...
I love how they are able to capture me blend both the Beatles and Syd Era Floyd into this loving and silly video. The oil projections (Floyd) the creepy costumes (Beatles) the overall playfulness and art school vibe of the video (Beatles/Floyd). I am 35 but discovered the Beatles in elementary school and became obsessed (I cried watching a documentary when it got to their breakup). I remember being challenged at first by the psychedelic era of my favorite band, but then embracing it as my favorite era. I owned only two full Beatles albums apart from my anthologies (red and blue albums), Sgt. Peppers and Magical Mystery Tour. I still love those albums.
Well put sir, bravo
My type of musical knowledge and taste what a distinguished gentleman. I’m 25 and was bottle fed all of that and zeppelin, who, all the way to god damn weather report, and don’t get me started on funkadelic. Our generation of popular music is literally a flaming pile of three note garbage.
Grasshopper, you have become astute, having gathered much knowledge!
Very cool 😎👍. I grew up listening to the Beatles, thanks to my mom who was lucky enough to have been able to get to see them live. At the time the stadium speakers were well below sub par, so her only regret was that she couldn't hear one word of any song that they played that day. Sucks, but still, the Beatles were only, like, a 50 to 75 feet away from them. So there's that 😂
