When deriving the FOIL Function only net reservoir data should be used. Net reservoir being defined as reservoir rock capable of holding hydrocarbon. This can simply determined by Sw vs. Porosity cross plot. BVW is only a function of the height above the FWL and is independent of porosity and permeability - in net reservoir rock. In non-net reservoir the BVW = porosity (as Sw=1) and therefore can’t be used in deriving the FOIL Function. The resistivity log is incorrect in thin beds and close to conductive shales beds. These data shouldn’t be used in the derivation. The derived FOIL Function will still give the correct Sw in these intervals. This has been confirmed by comparison to core Sw. As the FOIL Function is a straight line in log-log space, only 2 points from the centre of thick clean beds are required to derived it! Contact me if you have any questions.
