Important Update on our Absence

We haven't posted a video for awhile now, and I thought I would take a minute (8 more like it) to explain. It would be putting it lightly to say that things have escalated a little in our world lately, and I think we could all use a moment, even if it is a fleeting moment, to remember that we can still be kind. We can still be loving. We don't choose what happens to us in life, but we do choose...

    Grew up on a farm (Australia), a couple of my brothers were shearers so this brought back memories. Once one of them at a shearing competition sheared a sheep with hand shears while blindfolded without nicking their skin. The other had (at the time) the endurance shearing world record, something like 1000 sheep in 36 hours.

    What time of year do you take the leaves?

    • @the_shelleys
      @the_shelleys 2 роки тому

      Great question, we were harvesting in July but you can start whenever you see them, we like to leave it until we know the flowers are almost done (when they are near the top of the plant) as to not hinder the bees. The only difficulty in that is by this time of year you are very close to when the leaves are browning and you want green and fresh. So I would say regionally you have to just keep an eye on them, for us this is July that we start.

    Crap there’s no “don’t reccomend channel” button on an ad :/. That gun was way too big for a little wee black-bear tho. There so scarce now where I live because of “sport” hunting. I’d never imagine getting a tag for one

    • @JonAlycia

      Where do you live? There’s no shortage round where we are lol

    • @the_shelleys
      @the_shelleys 3 роки тому

      Hey, I wonder if you are familiar with the size of a 50 cal round ball? They aren't in fact very large. Also, what do you mean by sport hunting? Is that to assume we are not harvesting this animal? We are using the fat, the meat, the hide, and we eat this to feed our family of 6. We don't purchase meat from a store (as much as we are able we try to hunt or raise our meat) I always find it interesting having to justify hunting black bears. Where we live they are killing moose at an alarming rate, yet if I were to hunt a moose that might be ok. We are sustainably and ethically hunting these animals, for which we take a great amount of care and responsibility in doing.Thank you for the comment though :)

    I would be terrified. I don’t know much about bears but I believe if you missed the kill shot on that bear and it’s cub was nearby, it would charge you. I would never use a gun that I can only fire no more the 4 times a minute

    • @the_shelleys
      @the_shelleys 3 роки тому

      It is hard not to have your heart in your throat. Part of my scouting is to ensure that this is not a mama with a cub, which means lots of watching and waiting. This was a boar (male). With proper shot placement I am not very worried about having a muzzleloader, that being said I did have my 30-06 in the truck just in case.

      We pay between 50-90 dollars per 1000-1200lb bales, in the winter that lasts about a month? and in the summer we rotate them on grass. Id say about 800-1000 dollars to feed for the year
