    I have a watch that has an identical mechanism but is not working. I think the teeth of the escape wheel fit into the balance cylinder and therefore the latter moves too much. I also believe that the rocker does not hold its position because the pivot is broken (or at least I think so). basically the rocker swings until it engages with the nearby wheel. Is yours like this too? what kind of manufacturing is your movement, mine doesn't have a name

  • @RollaArtis
    @RollaArtis Місяць тому

    Although the escapement has a bad reputation, the same goes for the early wristwatches. The reason why both are difficult to repair is simply because one cannot now get the parts. Many of these were for Swiss cylinder watches, these were standard and interchangeable, but now are not available.

    0:22:30 Thanks for this video. Do you use a smoothing broach inside the new bushing to address any imperfections left by the cutting broach?

    • @Mr-Wonderfull

      I do not use smoothing broaches on new bushings but I do have them for older clocks where somethimes rebushing is not really needed just a little cleanup of the hole.

    I don't have a set of the proper size reamers for bushings. I don't do enough clock repairs to warrant buying a set in my case. As such I use cutting broaches to get the hole to the proper size. One of the things I do for getting the size of the hole right for the bushing is to carefully slide my caliper after setting it to 0.03mm under the bushing size and then locking it down with the tension screw up the taper on the broach cutter until the caliper touches on the cutting edge and place a sharpie mark around the cutter on the thicker side of the broach. I place the sharpie mark and check it under the microscope. One thing I've noticed with the set of cutting broaches that I have is that the dimension across the cutting blades is slightly different for one pair of the opposing blades than the other so when measuring I will turn the cutting broach 90 degrees. Which ever pair of cutting edges has the larger dimension is the one I use for the measurement. I find this more comforting, faster, and less stressful because I can work my way up to the mark while focusing on keeping the cutter perpendicular to the plate. Everything else I do the same as you demonstrated. If the bushing is close enough to the edge of the plate to allow me to reach the bushing with my staking tool, I use that to drive in the bushing instead of free handing with a flat face punch. I work on watches far more than clocks so I have watchmaker's tools.

    hi. I have the same one and during the first few rings, I can't stop the alarm, only when it wakes up at the end. In the first few rings, have you tried using the button to stop the alarm?

    • @Mr-Wonderfull
      @Mr-Wonderfull 6 місяців тому

      Well I already know the answer without trying. Because of the way to stop works is it's held in place by the force of the spring hence why the stop resets if you rewind so during those first rings it will never work because the force is intermittent.

    • @Mr-Wonderfull

      No special steps need to be taken. Can be transported as is safely. The balans wheel doesn't weigh enough to cause damage to the wire if moved around.

    Nice video I have a clock like that with missing crown and broken upper pivot in the cylinder escapement unfortunately... Anyway did you know why we can't find the manufacturer name clearly and usually you don't have many jewels (maybe one) ...

    • @Mr-Wonderfull
      @Mr-Wonderfull 6 місяців тому

      It is not uncommon for older clocks and watches to not have the brands marked on there. This is often because the movement and the watch casing where from different makers and such. If you really want to know the brand of the movement there are books where they have drawing of all the movements front and back sorted by size. But in order to repair those you dont need to know the brand. It is possible to repair them without knowing the brand. That being said your best chance is to just find a replacement cylinder.

    👋🏻please tell me if you know. In this alarm clock, the luminous coating of the numbers and hands is made of the chemical element radium? or is it not radium

    • @Mr-Wonderfull
      @Mr-Wonderfull 6 місяців тому

      Well one of the checks you can do is to place it in a pitch black environment for a few hours. Check without showing it to the light and if it no longer glows it is luminosa. But if it still glows chances are it is either tritium or radium. Tritium only last for 20 years so if it are old alarm clocks unless it was redone at some part in the live of the alarm clock(and yes redoing it was a thing) it probably is radium. Those are just checks if you want to make sure get a Geiger counter or go to someone who has one.

    I'm a hobbyist and had bought a pin set movement to restore. As I examined the movement I realized something was different with it. The escape wheel was different than what I had ever come across. I removed the balance assembly and then noticed the pin on the side of the balance and that there was no pallet fork. after some sleuthing I realized this was a cylinder escapement. I found your video and am now afraid to continue without asking about balance assembly replacement. I am not equipped to do repairs to the balance if it is worn but the watch was working before I started. If I continue, is there anything special I need to do as I try to replace the balance assembly into the watch to avoid damaging the cylinder staff or escape wheel teeth? If I continue to disassemble the movement is there anything else I should be watching for. As it was working I don't want to destroy the watch if I can avoid it. Thanks, Les

    • @Mr-Wonderfull
      @Mr-Wonderfull 6 місяців тому

      Well if it was working than maybe you get away with just a maintenance. Disasmebly, cleaning, putting it back together and oiling. Like you would do with any other movement. Just be careful to disarm the movement before removing the balans sinds once removed and there still is power on the geartrain it all gets released things might go flying and the hairspring is very fragile.

    Citric and acetic acid (particularly when diluted to the point of being sold as vinegar) are as you said very slow methods to dissolve a broken/completely stuck screw. One chemical which is still quite safe to handle (skin contact is no problem, just rinse it off) but dissolves problem screws when desired is Alum. Make a strong solution in water and soak the plate containing the screw overnight and it will be gone by morning. Just as with vinegar and citric acid, any steel or iron parts exposed will be dissolved. If there are any steel or iron parts that will be submerged in the alum they can be protected by covering them with wax. Just drip melted wax to cover any part needing protection.

    • @Mr-Wonderfull

    The Garde clock were definitely the tournament standard and visually one of the best looking chess clocks but I didn't think they were the best. The big boxes always sounded a bit rattling and seeing the inside it doesn't surprise me now. I found the German Jaerger clocks to be mechanically ,uch, much better. Maybe not looking as fancy but they had a solid feel to them when playing, that the Garde lacked.

      Not there is no need for that unless that sides is also worn out. Because the whole idea of rebushing is that you try to keep the same centre and even if you mess up there is no way you are going to mess up exactly the same on the other side so that doesn't help.
