Sans Bar: Creating Experiences That Foster True Connection with Chris Marshall
Redefining joy and connection means breaking free from the idea that alcohol is essential to social fulfillment. When we create genuine human connection beyond the influence of substances, we can nurture authentic relationships and support individuals post-recovery. Our guest this week challenges the norms of traditional social spaces by creating experiences that foster genuine connection, inspiring hope for those seeking true meaning in their sober journey, through his work at Sans Bar.
Chris Marshall is a former substance use counselor turned entrepreneur and the founder of Sans Bar, the first non-alcoholic bar in North America, established in 2017. Prior to founding Sans Bar, Chris worked as a substance use counselor in Texas for eight years, dedicating his career to helping individuals navigate recovery and mental health challenges.
As a sought-after speaker, Chris has taken the stage at prestigious events including the Aspen Ideas Festival, South by Southwest, and Bar Convent Brooklyn. He is also a recognized mental health thought leader, with his insights featured in major outlets such as CNN, The New York Times, Men’s Health Magazine, and The Today Show.
Chris brings over 18 years of personal sobriety to his work, inspiring others through his lived experience and professional expertise. Residing in Austin, Texas, he shares his life with his wife and two children. He is the author of the forthcoming memoir Faster Than Light, an intimate exploration of mental health and substance use recovery.

So So - arrgh.
Yeah to that!!!❤🎉
Such a powerful gift!
Hey Dr. Powers, I really enjoyed the video. As a possible future substance abuse counselor, this video was extremely informative. After 30 years working as a critical care transport paramedic, it may be time to follow the path I have been wanting to follow for a long time which is to obtain my LCDC. Though my highest level of education is an associate degree in paramedic science, I feel with my future LCDC along with the desire to help in this way, especially after seeing how substance abuse effects the user, their family and friends, as well as a big societal issue during my 30 years in ems, it could be the time I finally take the leap. Thanks again for the video!!
Wow, that is incredible to hear! All the best wishes on getting your LCDC. Such an honorable career path - from transport paramedic to following your dream to help families on a different level. I'm honored that this video helped you discover your dream!
Also, I am reading your book “When the Servant Becomes the Master” and gaining a lot from it. Since I am in Houston, I hope to say hello in person one day as I begin my new journey.
@@MarkLubel Absolutely! And so glad you're finding it helpful.
The bad thing about this Opioid problem, it really hurts the people like myself that need pain meds everyday, every 4 hrs. like myself for the rest of my life,at 73 they are forcing me to see a pain doctor every 30 days and testing my urine to make sure I'm taking the meds. I so dearly need, and that is bad enough but it costs me $40 copay a visit, and with my wife and I on fixed incomes plus the costs of all our meds it hurts our way of life. The real bad thing because of foolish people young/old selling their pills it makes for a miserable way of life for me. Just to give you an idea of my problems(small part)I have concrete in 2 places in my spine 2 plates in my neck 1 plate in my face, I've had many broken bones, long story short my bone density....well about 15yrs ago I was after a density test she said my density is worse than an "old lady after minapause" the last time I fractured my spine I was just bending over. Anyway the problem of getting perscriptions it's not the way to treat someone they know needs the meds. why would they think I'd be selling or giving my pills away and I'm giving you a small part of the misery they put people like 1:18 myself through hell. 😢 1:18
My mum used to do coke she doesent any more bc we helped her get throuh depression
So glad your family was able to find healing! 🙏🏻
Where can I find this full episode?
You can listen here on YT on our podcast playlist for "Positive Recovery MD" or you can listen to the show for more episodes like this one anywhere you listen to your favorite podcasts (Apple, Spotify, iHeart Radio, etc)
Weird, all my kids were born as babies 😅
Hey, the sentiment still counts! We're all trying to find ourselves, no matter how young or old we are.
Hey there’s this really cool thing it’s called uh “Drug Reagent Testing Kits” there another one called “Drug Safety” and uhhh PROPER EDUCATION AND RESEARCH ABOUT THE REALITY OF ADDICTION
Recovery education is one of the most important things we can do in recovery advocacy (and there's always more to learn!)
Absolutely absolutely how it should be done bravo and congratulations on your sobriety That's fantastic❤🙏🌹
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed the video
Such a Jewish thing to say he was a jew right? ❤
Class of 3rd graders? I heard it was college students 😅
I think you may have missed the point...Or you're proving it. I'm not sure.
haha, negativity bias proven once again! 😆 The principle still stands!
i have severe anxiety, high stress level, i urinate a lot(is this a symptom?) what can i do?
Hi, we appreciate your honesty. If you are in Texas, we have locations across the state that can help you with your symptoms. You can give us a call at 877-476-2743 if you need to speak with a recovery advocate who can guide you on the right path. Otherwise, we suggest you talk with your primary doctor about these symptoms. We wish you the best care no matter where you go!
Yes, celebrate your small daily wins
No matter how small!
One tiny error on a math equation can be horribly relevant in air travel, engineering, space travel…
Yes, but it’s a metaphor for third-graders lol
Of course there are times where the wrong answer can leave a negative impact!
Learning to identify problems is not a bad thing. Cause you cant solve a problem without idenitfying it first. But focusing so much on the problem or negativity that it leads to thats all you can see and having fear of living or whatever you can think of then it is a problem. Also, if you cant live with some form of gratitude in your life then you also have a problem. Being humble means being teachable and is the underside of acknowledging your own fragility and knowing that even if you do great things doesnt mean your better than other people, you just happened to identify and solve a problem for you a little bit quicker than others.
Gratitude is everything! 🙏🏻 And yes, it is a daily process of always becoming better than yesterday. Mistakes help us AND others learn!
It shows that we should concentrate on the positive, not the mistakes.
Acknowledge the mistake, yes and learn from it. But focusing on the positive actions and daily wins are what help us keep us going! It's all about your mindset.
3rd graders would not have that level math ..and that's not how that happened with Einstein...you sound stupid do your research...
It's weird I was just explaining this to a friend last night. Stop recording my conversations, Google!
haha, I can't say anything about Google, but negativity bias is a fascinating concept for sure!
Thats why I dont try to impress people they just watiing for you to make a small error ans make you feel like so bad and you become cold to other people which they really wanted to do to people who make other people happy.
Your behavior is the only thing you can control - how others respond or react is not in your control. Our happiness is one of those things!
They laughed because 9 * 10 = 91 is dumb as hell 😂
3 x 5 = 12, you better not tell me otherwise, that's a completely normal and expected thing for me to believe
It’s 35
9 x 10 equals 91 if you're moving at a rate of speed through the Universe that makes such so. (Relativity Theory/Einstein..)
It does not. Only certain physical quantities are affected by relativistic effects. A pure mathematical expression has little to do with physics.
@@ThePopeOfAllDope It does.
@@shellybastion9974 then explain it. I study physics.
@@ThePopeOfAllDope The key to understanding Universal physics is this: at a certain "point," all known rules fail and are radically perverted. ..It's a given; no one really knows the explanation.
@@shellybastion9974 do you know what a Lorentz transformation is?
Hi I'm in recovery as an addict for 40yrs I'm 51 and I'm the worst kind Im the text book Dr jeckle and Mr hide . Nurses in Ontario should pass random drug tests every month

How come nobody refers to cigarettes and nicotine addiction as a disease. It's because that shit don't get you wasted and strung out and prevent you from doing what you have to do in life. Addicts don't have to take accountability/responsibility for it. Do people with cancer for example relapse and choose to go back out and get cancer? No but addicts choose to go back to drugs/alcohol all the time! I was a hard liquor addict aka raging alcoholic for over 10 years. Yes addiction is serious, but it's a DISORDER in the brain. In my case genetically. Substances are like monsters where you have to go to the place where they"reside" to find them. Real diseases on the other hand are like zombies, them shits come to you. We live in a world nowadays where in some places they make up excuses for pedophiles. The United States anymore has soooo many whiny little pussies with excuse after excuse after excuse. And this whole disease excuse came from a womanizing Nazi ideological cultist named Bill Wilson, who was one of the two founders of alcoholics anonymous. And this was back in 1935. Two years after the end of prohibition. Time for an update!
Dr stethoscope
Hope you have a great day!
@@positiverecoverycentersthank you Dr stethoscope you do the same ❤️🫶🏼
Do you think a person in meth psychosis is A) aware of what they are doing? B) Can, at any given time, understand that they are in psychosis and pull themselves out? C) responsible for what they are doing. Hypothetically speaking, my friend’s 😉 boyfriend was on Live Sex Chat Rooms. She had expressed that she was ok with it if they did it together. Well, one of his delusions is that she is cheating on him with the entire town i.e. the mayor, all the police officers, the FBI, etc. and he believes that she is setting him up to be taken in and killed in jail. As many times as she had tried to team him that none of it is true, he won’t believe her. Now she is reactively abusing him. She knows she is wrong, but he pushes and pushes. I mean hour after hour he badgers her. He’s done it for 12 hours straight. So she is out of patience. She loves him and not on meth he’s amazing. But he’s an addict and having a hard time quitting. Omg. That was really long. Sorry. Original question. Is he completely responsible?
Hi, thanks for reaching out and sharing your experience. With any substance abuse, it's hard to make the best decisions when under the influence. We aren't in alignment with our mind/body/spirit when using and these types of substances can wreak havoc on our psyche, and lead to like paranoia or the delusions in which you are speaking of. Every person's reaction is different so it's hard to say there are absolute answers to every situation. If you would like to discuss further or need help supporting your friend's boyfriend, you can call us today at 877-476-2743 and a recovery advocate can point you in the right direction!
@@positiverecoverycenters thank you for the response! I will let her know.
Guilty on the bad effects. I mean hangovers last days when you get 30.
Hangovers are no fun for anyone!
i have a people problem being social isn’t that great i love being at home drinking by myself gaming it’s a blast
What is considered years and amount please
So glad you asked! The short answer is this: everyone is different, and there are many factors, including genetics, age, gender, how much you used/drank, how long you've used/drank, whether there are any other cognitive ailments we need to address, tolerance, etc. In the video, I share that a conservative, safe estimate if you have never used is about 5 years. However, many individuals with addiction have additional mental health disorders that can also affect the outcome. In general, it takes years but depending on the person, it differs on the exact amount. If you or a loved one need help with substance use disorder, please reach out and call us at 877-476-2743.
Great conversation! Much needed information around opioid substance abuse. Insightful conversation around how addiction medicine has evolved over the last few years.
