Why Some Games Make the Credits Playable
Interactive credit sequences go a long way towards making the ending of the game memorable, plus they're just plain fun.
Been working long and hard towards making this end of year video, it's going to be a bigger one it seems but hopefully the scope doesn't get away from me completely. Keep your eyes out for that!
If you enjoyed the video consider subscribing, it goes a long way.

Dredge and Dave the Diver, the two highly acclaimed fishing video games of 2023. Both were a fun time, however while one felt satisfying and polished, the other felt a little bloated and leaves an odd aftertaste. If you enjoyed the video consider subscribing, it goes a long way. Enslaved: Odyssey to the West is such a solid video game and a joy to experience, let down only by some technical shortcomings. A remaster fixing the few issues that are present in the game would go such a long way in making this game a must-play. If you enjoyed the video consider subscribing, it goes a long way. With October over it's time for the first annual Backlog of Horror! I spent the month playing some of the spookiest games on my backlog and it was a blast! I was aiming to upload this a few days ago but unfortunately I got delayed during production. Hope you all had a good October, and apologies for the delay with this upload, but I have more stuff in the works I promise. If you enjoyed the vid...

Rhythm Heaven (DS & Wii) are awesome for this
2:55 "In NieR:Automata, the credit sequence for ending E is an arcade shooter akin to something like-" the hacking minigame you've been using for hours up to this point
For me the best thing I did was accept that I may not finish the backlog, and as you said in the video as well. See my backlog as a library of many wonderful adventures. I do sometimes have choice paralysis, but I just try to feel what I may feel like. Sometimes I just try to pick anything, cause I know I'll probably like it, they're in the backlog for a reason.
Golden opportunity missed to make an interactive video outro
Ramen origins
What remains of Edith flinch has one
That Vsauce music hit me like a sledgehammer
Mario Galaxy 2 and Local Roku Ceres. Those are pretty good ones
Try out Missions Impossible for N64 not psx. after the end credits, You will walk around and talk to the game devs.
Chrono Trigger's Dream Team ending remains very memorable for me. I was going to say maybe it doesn't count, but I guess it's comparable to the Zombies Ate My Neighbors example. It's one of the many endings, intended to be one of the more difficult ones to reach. But getting to see each of the major devs got to add their own line there was fun, capturing a little bit of their personalities. And what a legendary team the game had.
one really cool interactive credits sequence is from space invaders extreme where the player shoots invaders that explode each other causing a chain reaction
The earliest interactive credits scene I can recall was in Altered Beast for Mega Drive (1988). It let you move around and beat up the names to make them drop off the screen. IIRC this wasn't in the original arcade version (it had an entirely different ending/credits scene).
@@todesziege Haven’t even heard of the game until you brought it up, but looking at a video that definitely looks like gameplay under the credit sequence, and it predates Boogie Wings! This might be one of the earliest.
3:21 Donkey Kong came out in 1981 dude :/
No idea how I got that mixed up, you’re right. Let’s just pretend it’s engagement bait and I did it on purpose.
Gotta love Rayman Origins and Legends letting you destroy the credits _(in the former's case, only after beating the hard-as-balls bonus area)._ :D Or Undertale having you dodge the credits flying at you.
@robertlupa8273 actually can’t believe I forgot Rayman Origins! That game was my first Platinum Trophy back on PS3!!
THIS IS AMAZING! I REALLY LOVE YOUR CONTENT. NEW SUB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
One thing you didn't touch on that I really love about interactive credits is for speedruns - having the credits be interactive can sometimes mean there's ways to speed them up or end earlier, so the strategy and routing for the speedrun can continue into the credits, and WR videos or live marathon runs get to include shouting out the devs if they count the credits as part of the run. My favorite for this is Distance, an indie arcade racer. Instead of laps on a set track, it's point A to point B parkour platforming, so you can hop off the road, wallride on buildings, fly, and make your own entirly different routes to get the end of each map. In the credits, there just so happens to be multiple endzones, so the speedrun can dodge a teleport trigger and hit an earlier end. But in a normal playthrough, there's a whole Mario Galaxy-esk mini planet to drive around on filled with all the Kickstarter backers' names, a bit like Katamari's credits.
@@Californ1a didn’t even consider that, that’s so cool though. Might need to quietly add Distance onto my backlog then since that sounds so fun. I know Super Monkey Ball is a fairly popular speed game too and would not be surprised if there were specific strategies for getting through that credit sequence as quickly as possible
a really good interactive credits sequence is the ending of chippy where the player has to fight they're way though the scrolling credits not only fighting blocky constructs of the devs names but also the top players names before the redux update!
Smash Bros. Melee and Nier Automata were so cool about this.
For me a backlog is games I bought but haven’t finished it ( aka credits rolling ) and it keeps increasing every steam sale 😢😢
I don't know if i just missed something but I don't think you mention that Boogie Wings came out in 1992.
I think you're right actually, oversight on my part oops. It is shown in the bottom left corner briefly but I forgot to actually say it.
Nier: Automata mentioned, I am relieved. You should totally play it.
I'm going to make it my New Year's resolution to play it next year I think. Thanks for the recommendation!
@@Gaming_Backlogit's honestly such an amazing game. I'd recommend going in to it as blind as you can. I just wish I could forget it all to play it again with fresh eyes
I am here now to notify you that this video got recommended on the main page.
Awesome video, I’m amazed you don’t have many more subscribers. Here’s another one. I’m Sub #335. I can’t wait for you to reach the thousands and eventually millions. Keep doing what you are doing.
Thank you so much, it honestly means so much to me
I’m not sure if you’d count it as an “interactive credits” but the first ever video game Easter egg was in the Atari 2600 for the game Adventure where the Easter egg revealed the credits of the creator of the game
I'm not sure I'd consider it either since it departs from a tradition credits sequence so much, but that's a really good one that I didn't even think about. First Easter egg as well as being credited as first developer credits in a game (as far as a google search told me). Since there's gameplay while the credits are shown there's probably an argument for it to be the first interactive credits in a video game, though I'd probably not include it just because it's not a credit sequence at the end of the game, but a secret room with credits in it. Really great point though!
True, technically you're seeing the credits as you play. I think it was the first credits in a game too? which would make the first credits ever, interactive.
INCORRECT!!!!!
Well edited and produced, easy sub
I love when games do this, but I also sometimes hate it. For example, in some Super Monkey Ball games, you get a credit scene after each world, and it just takes so long sometimes. I think the reason you can't skip them is that they're interactive. anyway, rant overa nice video dude! now I have another thing ill pay attention to while playing video games!
Dude your videos are so well produced and researched. You’re gonna blow up one day I’m sure, this stuff is gold
Crying, thank you so much 😭❤
Forget the backlog, I have to focus enough to finish this video in one sitting
It's a hobby it should be fun oriented hobby not a goal oriented hobby just play the game you feel like playing you don't have to finish the food on your plate if you don't like the food.
This is a great video! The writing and editing are great, your voice and pacing are a perfect combo between calm and engaging, and your review of the games is interesting whether the viewer has played them or not. Congrats, looking forward to more videos!
@@MorganePoney thank you so much!
I dont even know why i'm watching this , im either playing mp games only or the same game over and over and never get tired of it (*cough* soulslike/borne and dead cells) i dont even have a backlog, but i got to agree, a well made video is a well made video
I really liked this video! I see i make similar videos. Keep up the good vids!
Just finished this game on Saturday and this video pops up in my feed nice.
Goated game. 2010 had a lot of hidden gems like Enslaved and Castlevania: Lords of Shadow that are fantastic despite their flaws.
Finished this game numerous times already, because of the movement and acrobatics of monkey, and also because i think monkey is hot 🔥🥵🔥
I played through this years ago on pc. Good game for what it is! I liked it!
played it. shit.
Always wanted to try this because of the art on the box, never could.
DUDE YESSSS I LOVED THIS GAMEEEE SUPER UNDERRATED!!!
the game itself is nice, but i cant say that it only has "a few issues". in your video, the screen tearing and performance of the game is so absurdly shit, that its hard to actually enjoy. these are effectively dealbreaker for me, which cant be overlooked.
I was just thinking about it a couple of days ago and how I wanted to see if there was any good videos of it. Lo and behold I ended up finding this one that was recently uploaded! I played it and really enjoyed the characters, remember being confused about the ending and the actual gameplay was pretty meh. I'm glad to have played it though, definitely left an impression.
i liked it maybe not in my top ten but i remember going through it once.
I have 1500+ game in my backlog so I just turned them into my collections. I have no intention to finish them now. So my actual backlog is not probably 30. And yet with only 320 hr played so far this year, I don’t see myself finish this trimmed down version any time soon
🤣
Lesgoooooo
I love this game
I recently bought a Steam Deck, and that’s meant that for the first time ever, I’m no longer restricted in what I can play due to hardware limitations. So for me, it’s been the opposite issue. I didn’t have trouble trying to figure out what I wanted to play, but rather, I suddenly had the desire to play _everything_ - all at the same time. Literally, I just went through the list: “Wanna play that. Wanna play that. Wanna play that…” My first step was to break everything down into three lists: wishlist, in library, and replay. Wishlist is for new games that I’ve bought / will buy; in library is for stuff I already own that I’ve not played; and replay is for stuff I want to play through again. The goal is to play through one game from each list at a time, kind of as a “set” basically. At the moment it’s Elden Ring (Wishlist), ANNO: Mutationem (In Library), and Spyro Reignited (Replay). I restrict myself to playing those games until I finish/quit them, but within that group of three I can freely swap back and forth between them whenever I start feeling burnout. It’s a good balance between freedom and commitment that ensures progress is actually made, because historically I’ve started countless games and then “forgot” to finish them.
One tactic that works for me is to play the majority of my backlog on easier modes, and maybe save the harder modes for games you CRAVE for challenges.
I know it was for halloween, but I think it's a cool idea to divide your backlog into genres and play 2 or 3 games of the same genre every month, at least when you don't know what to play next. Keep up the good work! I like the pacing
I have deleted my backlog because it added more stress ,so now I'm playing whatever matches my mood from my collection and from my brother's collection of games and if it's not working for me I'm moving on to something else.
Why delete? Just let it pile up, it is digital anyways. It is possible you might end up deleting some gems. It happened by mistake to my movies wishlist, i collected that wishlist over few years and one small mistake and all gone.
@@dennisthemenace4288 I just wanted to be more spontaneous with games that i want to play instead of treating it like a "to do list".But you are right ,if there is a movie or a game that i want to play and can't remember its name then it's a shame.
