    You don't get it. YOU caused all of this. You allowed the Teacher's union to not care about the people it's supposed to represent - to the point where they don't care about you. You've allowed schools to get so bad that parents don't want to fund them - and now even worse, to take their kids OUT.

    I wish there was a teacher’s union based on these tenets 1) The job of teaching is important enough that the pay of teaching should not be “acceptable” it should be GOOD. Teaching should be a lucrative profession. 2) Teaching should be a difficult job to KEEP. It is an important enough job that as a teacher you are going to be monitored and bad teachers need to be coached out. 3) Teachers get MUCH more control of their classroom but have much greater responsibility in communicating and collaborating with parents. 4) Workday is 8-5. 50 weeks a year just like most professions.

    Exactly correct.My son and daughter are dedicated primary school teachers but planning to leave.Their work load is over the top.Parents demands and behaviour is offensive.Having autistic children in a class is beyond what anyone should have to endure.The appalling behaviour and sense of entitlement from children is exhausting.The fact that parents and students email teachers at any time means they have no down time.

    Get out. The mental stress relief is worth it alone. Bad parenting, drug and alcohol babies and all other assorted disabilities( cannot keep up with the labels SLA PLA etc) the paperwork nobody reads ( IEPs lesson plans etc.) . The system is outdated , filled with societys problems that nobody has raised. There is no teaching it is all a holding cell. Get out.

    I have taught at a dozen schools and consulted at around a hundred districts across 6 states. The MAIN problem is NOT the pay! It is the psychological, emotional and physical abuse that teachers are being subjected to on a DAILY basis. For you non-teachers, imagine being belittled, abused and demeaned by children, adolescents and even adults (who hold your livelihood in their hands) and at the same time attacked for not "meeting the needs" of your abusers.

    There is teacher crisis for sure. There are a variety of major issues. BUT, innovative teachers are not the answer. In education, innovation usually means jumping on the latest BS fad. Our education system has been innovating since the 60's. How's that working out?? 😹

    I'm sorry to hear teachers struggling so bad. I choose to homeschool my kids, with one in public school, not by my choice. And I can't tell you enough how hard teaching is. Not in the aspect of the actual material, but in the aspect of keeping my kids attention. My children don't have cell phones, we are considering them, however they will have limited access to them when the time comes. I constantly question if they're learning enough, or at the level they should be. But after reading some of the comments it seems they might be somewhat ahead. Any resources you can share on curriculum? I have a kindergartner, one going into 3rd grade, and one about to enter 9th. Any help, or tips on how to keep them engaged would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance 😊

This nation does not punish people anymore, teens are committing most of the crime not, just another sing this nation has fallen. When you have people running around n making babies everywhere n no family structure, no dads then you have a nation full of hoods. You girls out there, stop letting hoods take advantage of you. This is why more neighborhoods are ghettos now, nobody wants to live in a ghetto. Well some do, not me.

    Children were meant to be taught at home. Our society changed drastically (by design) after WWI. It's all part of the destruction of the family and our moral values. The public education system was meant to fail from its inception. Meanwhile putting kids into learning boxes that few fit into. I'm sorry for the well-meaning, good intentioned teachers.

    I come from a family of teachers so I know what’s going on. In America, teachers are treated poorly and disrespected. Conservative schools boards took out art, music, vocational classes and the humanities. So, we wonder why we have a population that can’t critically think. In Asia and Europe, teachers are treated, respected and paid as the professionals they are, education is free and they know you need an educated populace to remain competitive. The Calvinist puritan destain of education and science in this country has ruined the ability of teachers to have the respect they should have, the lack of funding and support to teach properly, and with the parents expecting the teachers to parent the kids has led to chaos and disorder in the classroom.

    I was a mid-life career-change teacher with a husband with a good job, so my perspective has less to do with the profession as a means of self-support and more with it as a public service. (My younger colleagues, I will observe, worked like dogs, lived long distances from the school's toney suburb, and rarely left town because of the expense.) I taught six classes (English and social studies) and, in spite of being a "hard" teacher, was popular among my middle-school students because I came from a legal background and understood basic notions of due process, which are extremely important to kids that age; if they think you're unfair, you're dead to them. My principal was a nice woman, in over her head, whose main job she perceived as flapping in the wind of pedagogical fads and placating everyone: difficult students, demanding parents, an aged priest (it was a parochial school), and a staff that in quite a few cases also were, like the principal, parents of kids in the school (a big conflict of interest). I hope in my three years I managed to get some perspective on language and society into those kids' heads but a culture of success without effort, contempt for failure of any kind (how do you learn without ever failing?), insecurity about the nature of the culture itself, and competition for awards made the act of learning just another miserable chore that probably frightened everyone except me, because I'd grown up in a more civilized time.

    I started late in teaching and retired in 2020 as COVID broke. I taught middle school and high school. There is a shortage of teachers today, because they leave the profession within a few years of starting. When I started teaching nearly 25 years ago most teachers I worked with taught until full retirement. By the time I retired, many teachers were leaving with 10 years or less of teaching experience. Unless school administrations start really listening to the.concerns of teachers and earnestly working to address those concerns, the bleed will continue and there will always be a teacher shortage,!

The students were learning a lot and loving it. But admin made for a hostile work environment. Unsupportive. Micro-managing. So, I left. Hard to do. With regard to teacher pay, the problem is the sheer number of teachers and staff required. Even a 5% raise can mean an extra $ 50 million the taxpayers have to come up with. These people are struggling to pay their bills too. You can only raise their taxes so high to pay teachers more. Add to that, teachers get a VERY generous pension in most states. It can amount to 100% of what they ever were paid if they live long enough. The rest of us have to fund our retirement ourselves.

    • @theprivatepracticeteacher
      @theprivatepracticeteacher 18 днів тому

      I absolutely understand that. I don’t think we need to raise taxes to accomplish what we need. I think we need to spend the budget better. For example, my school district spent $44 million on teachers and paras and $64million on curriculum and resources most of which the teachers didn’t ask for and had to rework in order to use. More than 50% of US are qualified to write curriculum, so why are districts still purchasing it? And without teacher input?

    Anyone in business can tell you it is a management problem. We have unqualified School boards (poor choices by voters) which give you bad policy along with bad principles. • @theprivatepracticeteacher
      @theprivatepracticeteacher 18 днів тому

      Thank you for your questions. The disrespect comes from several places and in different ways. Some of it comes directly from parents via nasty emails, being yelled at personally and in public. Other times it’s parent groups, school administrators, and policy makers scapegoating teachers for the failings of the education systems. Although, I’ve heard stories of administrators being personally and publicly rude, nasty, and publicly verbally attacking teachers in front of students, parents, and coworkers. With students it’s rude, disruptive, and even violent and destructive behaviors. Another huge component is a refusal to address teachers’ expressed needs. We’ve been telling everyone and anyone what we need in order to effectively do our jobs, and it all falls on deaf ears. I hope that answers your questions. Thanks again.

      They could do a lot to help, that’s for sure. Personally, I think technology and screens is a huge part of it. Educators, counselors, and pediatricians all know very well how screen time effects their developing brains. Too much screen time explains a lot of what we see - increased impulsivity, hostility, agression, irritability, depression. I’m really not sure why we don’t talk about this more.

    Just retired last year after teaching middle school for 30 years. In my humble opinion based on experience the three most important steps to take to improve public education are the following: 1) ban all mobile phones and electronic devices from school grounds, no exceptions. 2) Grant teachers the authority to remove disruptive students from the classroom and administrators the authority to suspend disruptive students from the school permanently. 3) Raise teacher salaries to be competitive with the corporate world for professionals with the same level of education and experience.
