Gear is always a compromise or trade off of convenience or comfort and protection as in mesh jackets (like you said it gets hot in Arizona...and Florida where I am), best to get the best that's tolerable, money should not be a concern. I used to wear leather pants over jeans (neither motorcycle ones) then discovered Draggin' Jeans with kevlar and armor. I learned something about the boots with the fluid in them that hardens with impact, that's cool, I've been wearing 6" leather hiking boots since they are waterproof and thickly padded. I believe the most important protection is crash avoidance. Learn bike control and I always tell new riders to ride like you are invisible, don't count on drivers seeing you. I prefer to stay away from other vehicles so they can't get to me like they are trying to hit me, kind of a game like I'm a football running back, I'm going to change lanes, brake, speed up whatever to get away from them and stay at least (figuratively) out of arms reach like a running back would maneuver.
