I Don't use instagram but from the outside seems that all of these platforms are going in the same "tiktok" direction. I don't like flickr/500px either since you are bombarded with generic "perfect" photos. I've always advocated for some sort of "zine" website where people would post "collections" as opposed to individual photos, since a collection/zine/series/whatever is much more emotionally engaging and can tell a story, whereas with individual photos you just jump from one photo to the next and later can't remember any of it since there is no context and everything is so generic. And to preempt the argument that flickr has this, in terms of real use you actively make the decision and take the effort to go into the user's gallery, whereas I mean if you open the photo you instantly see the "zine" and not just some weird mix of random photos from various artists

even at 2017, instagram still has a better algo compared to the last 2 years. even my dumbest post back then will get some likes from my followers. but now i almost got no like, and sometime like from a bot LOL. my home feed often filled with someone or something that's not on my following list too, compared to back then when it's filled with people that i followed and every once in awhile it's from a random stranger

I post my photography on Instagram and I know it’s not about the likes but it gets to a certain point where it’s just ridiculous. The algorithm is completely messed up. I used to get around 60 likes On a post and that was mainly from my followers but now I’m lucky if I even get 1 like. There’s just not enough reach and I cannot connect with others very easily. I’ve started posting on VERO alongside Instagram and it seems more people view posts on there. I just want to reach people and turn my hobby into a paid job (I am unable to work). I haven’t posted on Instagram in quite a while but it was the same before and it’s the same now. All I get are ads (granted they are about things I enjoy) but still. Now I post very frequently, 3 photos per day and I am lucky if they reach even a single person

I've seen those reels of the most basic portraits. The photos are just okay. Fine. Nothing wrong with them, yet they aren't great portraits. They don't tell a story or have context. Like you say. It's more about the content than it is the actual end result. This could absolutely be changing people's perceptoins about what makes a great photo.

Thanks for sharing this video! I myself started shooting last May using a Kodak Ektar H35N and an Olympus Pen FT. I keep on learning new things about photography using these half-frame cameras. I have since built a modest collection of cameras, most of which are rangefinders and half-frame units. I’ve since replaced the H35N with an Olympus Pen EF, which has almost the same function and price but has a better focusing mechanism and better lens. It’s very informative and helpful, though I would like to point out some corrections: - The Olympus Trip 35 is essentialy a semi-automatic point and shoot camera, since it uses the selenium meter to autofocus. It does not use a rangefinder system, but rather relies on zone focusing, where the user “guesstimates” the distance of the subject. - The Olympus Pen FT is a half-frame SLR, but its design and structure is borrowed from the Leica III. - For rangefinders, I would recommend either an aperture-priority camera like the Yashica Electro 35 GSN or the shutter-priority/manual camera like the the Olympus 35RC and Canonet QL17 GIII. Since they are fixed lens rangefinder cameras, they are easy to use and are relatively cheap. Thanks!

I bought a Spotamatic SP11 camera with a full set of Takumar prime lenses I bought the kit mainly for the Takumar lenses 35mm3.5, 50mm1.4, 135mm3. 5 & 80- 300 zoom . The kit it came with filters , extension tubes 2x teleconverter . I left the camera in a backpack for 2 years when Pentax came out with the new Pentax 17 half frame camera I decided to give the Spotamatic a try If I was going to photograph with film I wanted a full frame camera with interchangeable lenses. The light Seals needed replacing and I replace them with $ 8.00 i supplies from Walmart. I shot the first roll of film with Fuji ASA 200 color film I used my Minolta light meter to meter for espourser and all the pictures came out and only needed minor editing with my editing program

my photography teacher would mark down my photos since they didn’t follow the rules. happy to say i dropped out of that class 😅 i tried to follow the “rules” but the pictures lacked so much character and instead just looked like it was apart of a magazine or an ad. dropping out of that class was the best thing i could’ve done for my photos.

I’ve been really feeling this a lot lately. If I don’t post on Instagram, no one even knows I am doing photography. If I do post on Instagram, no one sees it anyway. I’m all in on my own website now. It looks exactly how I want it to look. I write on my blog. I have my print store. I have my newsletter subscribers. That’s all mine and no one can take it from me. Thanks for this video. Good to know I am not the only one feeling like this. You got a subscribe.

"it's not good photography, it's good content" is spot on. This pursuit for more and more content, even hearing the word itself makes me wanna vomit, leads to the old quantity over quality because it doesn't matter if what you create is good, only matters if what you create generates engagement

  • @GeorgeChipo

Nice video. Definitely got a new subscriber in me. I have been very vocal about this very topic. Greed and exploitation of people's minds is the number one priority of Instagram. Being a photographer for about 20 years I hesitated joining instagram for many reasons, mainly because I always found it ugly and degrading to good photography (cropping and compression are other examples of many). Now, however, the algorithm is by far the worst side of it. I find myself to be addicted to it in recent years, since it became the main way of communication with my friends and family via the chat and calls. It also replaced TV and the news with stories and reels. I assume, most of my followers follow me because they saw me taking photos of someone famous couple of times, or because of some political content I occasionally share, not because they care about my photography, composition, colours or ideas. It is a very sad times for struggling photographers and it seems it's only going to get worse until it becomes better. The point you're making in the second half of the video is exactly how I think as well. Creating actual physical work, zines, books, prints, exhibitions and promoting them via mailing lists or magazine articles, journalists and writers is still how my strategy works.

You’re on point with everything in this video. I knew a guy that got sucked into the obsession with the IG algorithm. He would actively delete images that he himself liked and were proud of and liked if they didn’t perform well and would throw fits when his posts didn’t perform well. I remember he’d get angry and say things like “art is dead, nobody cares about good art” when the algorithm didn’t show enough people his posts. He would purely chase followers, and started making reels that use the same flavour of the month song and format and started to gain popularity. He got to 50k followers and when that happened, he left our friend group claiming that he “wanted to be around other photographers that shared his same vision”. Lol That whole interaction gave me some introspection and I stopped chasing likes a long time ago. It’s liberating. I get more satisfaction from printing the work I’m proud of than I would posting it on IG, even if very few or if at all anyone will even see it. I just love the process of photography itself and we must remind ourselves the reason why we love it.

If only there was a pure photography app, that would be great. These days I'm bombarded by reels of people telling me about Photoshop hacks. I think photography should always be done for yourself and then hope an audience likes what that is. That's where your signature style will develop (excuse the pun).
