Daphne The Dove Came Home!
After rescuing Baby Daphne and hand-raising her for 2 weeks, I let Daphne go this morning. She joined her family and I was so happy. That night I walk into the backyard at 6:30 for some air, I lock eyes with her on the line and a few I'm nts later I take this video of her coming home!

Mixing Food For Baby Bird Hand Feeding
Переглядів 314 тис.8 років тому
This is how I mix up Exact Hand Feeding Formula manufactured by Kaytee. In this video I am mixing food for a 3-week old Dove; please note that younger birds need more much more water in the mixture. Precise temperature is tough to achieve; I aim for "hot tub" temperature water. By the time you are done mixing, it will be the perfect temperature for feeding. Good luck!

This is literally the second time feeding her with my fingers simulating her mother's beak. So simple, no need for elaborate contraptions. This mimics their natural feeding environment and is the ONLY way to get them to willingly open their beak so you can put food in it! Trying to open the bird's beak does NOT work. The trick is simply closing your fingers gently around the bird's beak. When i...

My dove was sick. I think because he wasn't perching And he had diarrhea. So when I was trying to syringe, feed him water with some electrolytes, he died literally instantly within five minutes. I can't help but think maybe I wasn't supposed to surrend treat him water 💔

It's almost September and I came upon a fledging on a hot sidewalk. I was downtown and here he was, nowhere to go but the street or alongside busy storefronts... in 95-degree weather. Found the nest in a hanging flower basket above and placed him back. Next day, he was out again, sitting alongside the curb. He couldn't fly. He was so tiny!! Placed him back into the nest.... But next day (night actually), here he was, sitting 3 feet into the street. So, I took him home. He's small but feisty and flaps his wings a lot. Kind of a late bloomer. As for mom and dad, I have no idea if they kicked him out of the nest (no other siblings), or he just kept jumping out. He was too vulnerable in that heat and no shelter. The shops and foot traffic are always busy there, and this guy would eventually get stomped or kicked out into traffic. I noticed on Day 2 that one of the adult doves flew crooked and scooted along the street, he/she must've been hit by a car. I wasn't sure if this bird was ditched because mom and dad couldn't do it anymore.... ?? Anyway, I'm trying to feed this fella. It's messy but is working. How fast do these guys grow? Because we'll be having cold weather by mid-October, and I hope to turn him loose when he's strong enough and can peck at food and forage easily. A lady I spoke with in that area said there were two siblings that fledged first (successfully), and this fella must've been a late hatcher or something. I appreciate your video. Very helpful!!
@@SheenaRea awesome story! Mine I kept for almost 2 weeks, but I insisted on her being able to gain altitude rather than just descend under control, as I knew without that she wouldn’t have had a a chance. You’re doing an amazing deed, best of luck!

How often do you feed them?

I have a pet adult ringnecked dove who i need to syringe feed as he is not eating his seeds and pellet mash. I made a mash from abba ralf yellow food. I am having trouble getting his mouth open i think hes too far from babyhood to open instinctually as per your example.... i put some in his feed dish and some of the wet nash i made in a different dish... anyone have any tips? I dont want to shoot it into his mouth and make him aspirate
@@wendygahles9695 I wish I could help but like you said, he’s a bit old for my tricks. And I think that if he has simply started to refuse food he accepted before, there’s likely a bigger underlying issue. Perhaps a vet could help. Best of luck 🙏🏼
This helps me a lot
Please inform me how often I have to feed her? What time early morning I have to start feeding her?
Fed her as much as possible! Your job is to get her as big and strong as possible, so feed her first thing in the morning and then several times throughout the day, 3 at the bare minimum but preferably 4 or 5
Thanks a lot
How much do we feed it in a day and how frequently? I rescued a little one and it's injured it eats a little by itself but it's not cooing at all it's really quiet and don't bite or anything
I just found one yesterday, she's squeaking but when I do your method, it won't open it's beak? 😢what do I do?
It’ll be messy but get the food on your fingers and wrap them around the birds beak. You have to get her to taste it. Once she realizes there is food there she will open her beak. But she will likely fight you and try to break free. So hold her beak with your fingers covered in food and let her thrash around a bit trying to break free. Eventually some food should get in there and her behavior will immediately switch from trying to escape you to trying to find more of that food she just tasted
I was always afraid to feed rescue baby feral pigeons, really good advice.
Oh, so it doesnt have to be precise? Just more liquidy for very young birds, and as they age, less liquidy? I was nervous because im not good with precise stuff lol. I have 3 baby pigeons that will hatch out soon btw.
Exactly. I find the precise directions to be a bit silly. It’s really hard to measure out in such small portions, and once you know what the proper consistency looks like, precision measuring is kind of pointless. Same with temperature. I get comments by people freaking out about serving the food too hot and burning the baby. Do you know how quickly such a small amount of liquid loses temperature?! The food goes cold in no time. So don’t stress, you’ve got this! Use warm water and get the consistency to match my video. Test with your finger and if you think it’s too warm, wait a minute and test again. Easy-peasy!
@@matthewchandler2647 Thank you so much for your help! As my birds are first-time pigeon parents, I'm overthinking quite a bit! But I think they will be just fine! I just have worried about the parents not taking care of the babies because this is their first time, and maybe they don't know what to do, and I would have to end up raising them. That's why I'm buying squab formula JUST in case. Btw, how is your pigeon now? It's been a while since this video has been released. Lol.
@@madelynt1615 feed them as much as you possibly can and release them as soon as their flying is strong enough to get off the ground and stay off. The parents know exactly what to do, the chicks just came out of the nest too soon. Your job is to keep them growing until they can fly, at which point the parents will take over. I have other videos about Daphne the Dove’s release and reunion with her parents, it was fantastic!

How to know how much ml to give to the baby pigeon
Till their crop almost full
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!! This trick trained my one week old rescue dove to eat from my hands like a pro. I would even say that you saved that birds life. I have only hand fed parrots and I now know that these guys are very different to feed thanks to you, you bloody legend 👍👍👍❤
Hello this is urgent but I experienced giving water to that same bird you have but it looks like a Pigeon or Laughing Dove but it drowned can you please give an answer?
Hey… same happened to me. I rescued a baby pigeon from a cat’s mouth. It stayed very weak for about 24 hrs (cat’s saliva is poisonous for them) vet prescribed antibiotics and liquid food. Second time feeding it choked on the food 😣 I’m so heartbroken and trying to figure out what exactly I’ve done wrong. Bird a bit smaller than in the video and I gave 1 ml in one shot. Was the amount of food too big or did it fall the wrong way 😣
good job!
Hey man , what are you sitting on ???? Ha ha ha ha ha .and I saw a roll of toilet tissue , hoo hooo hoooo hooooo.
I’m multi-tasking 😉
Thank you 🥰⚘️⚘️
so cute
are you really sitting on the toilet?
Yes! Don’t worry, my pants are up! I kept her in the bathroom instead of a cage for almost 2 weeks since I wanted her to have the freedom to build up wing strength, but she would poop everywhere, plus I had a cat
I hope wherever she is. Shes happy. And so are you
Thanks for posting this video! It's helped me heaps, saving time and avoiding stress for me and my baby pigeons. To forcibly open their beaks is not the best way and I knew there should be a better way. This is it!
Awesome, so happy for you, best of luck!
Learn something from this..ive been feeding my dove with more hard consistency for the food.can you tell me how you figure how much food should you feed it?how much ML?
Easy - when it is full it will lose interest in eating. Feed it multiply times per day, 3 times minimum, and every time feed it until it refuses to eat anymore. Check my other video on feeding technique
Hallo, when do i know when the bird has had enough?
Easy - when it is full it will lose interest in eating!
hello Matthew, thanks for this video, it is amazing. However, as much as I mimic what you are doing, have the right food at the right temp - she just shakes her head and refuses to open her mouth. I have been trying for three days and I don't know how she is still alive. I have also put in crushed peanuts and wild bird seed in a bowl just in case but she doesn't bother with that either. I wish there was a way of contacting you direct as I could really do with some advice. Thanks L
How often do i feed it. Its just a baby
As much as possible. 4 or 5 times per day if you can. And when you feed, feed until she loses interest
Thank you. Watching this video I knew we were not feeding enough food
Yeah, food is more important than anything at this stage. They need to feed until they lose interest. Good luck!!!
We foundna baby dove this size and it would only drink water out of a spoon im gonna feed it with this method
Did it work?
@@matthewchandler2647 yes i used this idea and it works but the bird keeps pulling away
@@ImClimbingA_Tree all I can say is be persistent. You’re not Mom so it’s kind of confusing for baby, but she needs that food and her life is in your hands! Best of luck!
At what point should I start feeding the birds seeds? And when should I set them free? Also, how much of the formula should I be feeding them?
I can’t remember how many times per day I fed my dove, but every time I fed her until she lost interest. As long as you don’t force-feed them, you can’t overhead them at this stage. They need as much nutrients as possible to grow big and strong. As for feeding seed, I never tried. She didn’t really know what to do; after all they learn from their parents, and o had no way to teach her to forage. So I just got her fattened up with formula and returned her to the wild ASAP. Her parents had been waiting and watching for almost 2 weeks & the moment I set her free they swooped down out of nowhere to meet her and she flew up to the tree join them. I think I talk about it in my other videos. It was so cool. Later I saw the family doing everything together and soon enough she was so big I couldn’t tell her apart from the others!
I rescued a couple of doves from the yard. Im trying to feed them, but I can’t get them to open their beaks. Any tips? I’ve watched the video and tried dozens of time, but they don’t want to open their beaks.
That’s tough. You have to get them to taste the food somehow & associate it with your fingers. It’ll be messy but you could try putting some food on your fingertips & then wrapping your fingertips around their beaks. They’ll struggle a bit to get free and in the struggle they might open their beaks a little and get a taste. Once they figure out that you’re a food source, they should become very cooperative
You’re absolutely right! This morning they were ready to eat and it worked like a charm. Thanks for the great video.
@@xxdongus14xx61 That’s awesome! Great success!!
I also have a laughing dove and I want one more dove so that she can get company😢
Plz let me know if anyone has😭
My dove is younger, what are you feeding her/him? Just seeds in warm water?
I’m feeding her a crushed up seed mix that you combine with warm water. The brand is Kaytee and you can buy it in pet stores, though there are others that I’m sure are fine too. I talk about it in my other video. Good luck!
@matthewchandler2647 thank you very much. They have a seed mix just for doves 🕊 ! We had a storm a few days ago. Baby bird, no nest around. Lots of mourning doves in my area. He's/ she's been eating and pooping! But now there is an eye infection happening. 😑 need terramycin eye drops/gel ... $$$... I love animals too much to give up. Still can't tell if he's a boy or a girl. Still has feather rods, he does groom himself. Fits in one hand/palm.
@@Love.Yourself.1976 Awesome! I never knew if mine was as a boy or girl but I named it Daphne and she (I think!) visited me for a few days after I set her free, close at first but then further and further away as she re-connected with her wild roots. Even a year after I’d get an occasional unexplained dive-bomb which I figured was probably her saying hi! I hope she has a big family of her own by now!!
Thank you so much for this video. I have recently been given a baby dove to care for and had no clue what to do! I have only hand reared baby sparrows and baby robins. This video was a huge help and the hand trick worked like a charm!!!

Can I feed a baby sparrow this formula?
I can’t remember, but I believe so. They have several formulations for different bird types, but if I remember right this one was good for sparrows as well
How do birds like benegles, zebra finches etc keep the baby birds hydrated if they eat seeds
I haven’t a clue. Sounds like a question for National Geographic!

please, if i try the syringe and the little pigeon is coughing. should i use a long soft tube????
Sorry but my bird didn’t cough so I don’t know. What I do know is that the bird needs to take the food itself rather than you forcing the bird to eat. Perhaps it’s coughing because you are pushing it too hard?
@@matthewchandler2647 well he is eating while am holding food in front of his mouth, but won't drink unless i use syringe... also what kind pigeon is entirely black? the legs and moth and everything is pure black...
@@digitalhouse6969 if the bird is eating by itself I think your problem has been solved! No need to force feed it. As for an all-black pigeon, I have never heard of that before 🤷🏼♂️
Great video. I’m using the same formula for a baby Blue Jay that my brother found. I’ll be adding worms to his or her meals I’m just not sure how many to feed this lil fella. Your video taught me how to feed it. Hopefully he’ll be fine tomorrow. Thank you blessings
Good luck!
This is not the proper way to feed a baby dove 😔 Baby doves need to be *crop* fed. Never shoot liquid or wet food into the mouth of a baby dove. The opening to their airway, the glottis, is located right at the base of their tongue, so feeding the way this man is doing easily leads to aspiration pneumonia and death. Basically they suffocate to death.
You’re wrong. Thanks for the biology class but I fed her this way for 2 weeks until she was strong enough to reunite with her family. And not once did I kill her! I’m well aware you can essentially drown a fledgling in food, but they tell you when they need a break by backing off, at which time you stop squeezing the syringe. The bird will set the pace and in my experience it was a ravenous pace and the feedings were over in a couple of minutes flat.
Thank you! Going to give it a try!
Good luck! Have patience!
