Oh my it hurts. Like the incentive and all that, seems like you are not too experienced: go to the settings and change the border of zombies from ranged to all. This will give zombies a green border not only when ready to shoot them, but also when they enter your melee range. This will lead to you being able to have a feedback for what you are doing in melee combat. There are multiple videos for this out there and I PROMISE you that you'll love that. It changes melee combat from something scary and impossible to do reliably, to an understandable game mechanic actually understand
