Slickrock: Moab's most iconic trail definitely lives up to the hype. Despite the name, these petrified sand dunes provide amazing grip for bike tires. It's not a trail for riders who just like to bomb down trails, but powering up slopes that look impossible on ordinary terrain is quite the trip, and there are plenty of short steep sections. Incredible views as well, but expect more crowds than ...

Surprised to see this pop up in my feed. I rode this trail a few years back when it was still really overgrown. Funny enough, I did 911 first before crack and didn't think it was too bad. Nice to see it in actually rideable conditions.
It’s been a while since I’ve ridden 911 as well, so I’m not sure how it’s riding these days. It’s a great one when it’s not too overgrown! The Crack i find rides more consistently. Breaking can be brutal on 911 when it’s dusty or full of leaves.
When riding it clean is more important than the goggles 🤌
Exactly! No way I was interrupting the flow on that run! Haha
That's a very gnarly line
Very gnarly! Especially because it can get overgrown. If you like steep trails and you feel good on the other trails at Pacifica it can be fun though.
isnt this just the goat trail to crack?
I'm not sure what the goat trail is. It's not the hike-a-bike route up, but it finishes at the same spot as where The Crack finishes. It's gnarly for sure!
The entry point of that trail is about 300 yards further up the Fire Road then the crack . It's a totally different trial but it ends in the same place. @waymaniac
I think some people call it Powerline as the entry point is directly under the power lines and the trail follows the power lines for a minute. It's definitely steep definitely technical spots midway through. You would definitely want to scope it out or at least follow somebody that knows the line.
So about 4 years ago I was on Google maps looking around that area, because I have seen old remnants of trails here & there. I see something, a ribbon that parallels Crack and actually exits at the bottom of Crack. So I went in from the bottom maybe 100 yards, blocked, over grown. I climb up and find the entrance and go in maybe 30 yards, blocked. Came back a few days later with tools and worked it top to bottom, just getting it kind of rideable. Nice to see it's been brought to full ride status. I tell folks, when you find Crack rather easy, try 911. Rear brake modulation is key to control speed. As of now 9/2023, it seems to be getting a tad sketchier.
nice! Thanks for clearing it out and reviving the trail. It's great to have such an epic trail open again. Ditto on the rear brake modulation. It's a good exercise and staying calm and not clamping down on the brakes. It's been a while since I've ridden 911- I don't want to imagine ridding it now if it's even sketchier haha.
Last winters storms did a number on trails everywhere. Mile & Boyscouts got hammered too
@@jbdbsb Pacifica was already pretty wild!
@@waymaniac The steepest trail I
@@jbdbsb I think you got cut off. Have you ridden something steeper in the Bay?
i love crack
Did this today! Go-pro doesn't do this justice!!!! I've done crack, mile and all that gnar but this was on another level. Walked 20% of the trail, 5x as steep as go-pro shows. Perfect place to break bones.
Agreed! I’ve all the runs I’ve done this one suffered the most from the Go-pro effect. When you can see the seat post you know it’s steep though. Walking is the way to go if it doesn’t feel right. Best to live to fight another day, and take it down one stretch at a time. I’ll look forward to the video!
@@waymaniac yeah, definitely live to ride another day! You must've been leaning back far to clear that, good work!
@@Rszshredsmtb79 Thanks! How did you find 911 compares to some of the UCSC steep trails like Mailboxes?
@@waymaniac its like 100x harder, no traction- it is just dangerous. Mailboxes looks like a cake walk when compared to 911.
@@Rszshredsmtb79 Good to know. I hear Vampire Squid is the really steep trail at UCSC.
What dropped?
My googles! Everything is at risk on The Crack!
pretty hard not to put a foot down.. especially on the goalpost features. most of the trails there would be good for drones too. great edit and the drone made this video way better than typical go-pro vids!
Thanks! Yeah, it's a great zone for a drone. I've heard legends of no dab runs of Spaceballs!, but I can't imagine doing that. I'd love to see a video of a no-dab run though.
One of those "no, thank you" trails)
haha. Always a smart choice! Lately I feel that way too.
Looking back at this video, this was a solid run, great riding!
Thanks! I think it was my best. Pretty unexpected too as it was towards the end of the day and we were cooked.
There do you park your car. How do you get there ?
You can park on Higgins Way. You'll see lots of other cars parked there. Just follow the road to the end and you'll see a fire road that you can follow all the way up. People will be more than happy to help if you're having trouble finding it. Enjoy@
you know its steep when u can see the seatpost on the gopro. nice vid
Thanks! True haha. The go pro effect really doesn't do it justice- the seat post really is the only way to get a sense for how steep it is.
😉Steepest? Good video man. Happy to see the trail in such nice conditions.
Thanks! It's definitely an underrated trail when it's not overgrown. The rollers on the crack are probably steeper, but in terms of longer, sustained descents, I'd say 911 is up there in some sections.
Nice run down 911! I haven't been down that trail in a couple years, but the last time I did it was so overgrown that you had to deal with bar-grabbers as well as the gnar. I might have to get back on it tomorrow while I'm down there in Ptown!
Thanks! Yeah, I know what you mean haha. The trail is hard enough as it is without getting gored by branches. It's been cleared out recently though. Some of the trimmings from the trees can make it hard to get traction. Definitely a good trail to add into the rotation if you're looking for a challenge. Have fun out there!
Cool. I like the mix of drone shots with the GoPro shots. Gives a better sense of the terrain.
Thanks! That's good to hear. The drone shots are the best way to get around the go pro effect. What are your favorite zones to ride in SD?
3:17 amazing scenery, the mountains in the background
Red Rock Canyon! Cowboy Trails is a great zone if you're ever in the area. Like you said- it has some great desert scenery, plus it has some tough tech climbs and descents.
@@waymaniac Good to know, thanks!
Sweet! This trail looks rugged and gnarly. Is this in the same area as The Crack trail?
Yeah, they are in the same zone and you take the same fire road up for a stretch. The way to "The Crack" forks off after a while, and you have to take a hike-a-bike trail up. The rest of the way up to the mile, is the main way, and there are usually plenty of people who can direct you. It's definitely gnarly and can get pretty washed out after a rain. "The Crack" is more consistent, but the steep slabs are scarier. Both are great trails though!
@@waymaniac Good to know, thanks! Great looking trails for sure
This looks super fun!
My favorite trail in Pacifica! Definitely worth checking out if you're ever riding in the area. I'd recommend scoping out the trail before riding it though.
@@waymaniac Right on! Yeah looks like I’d need to scope the line out. Great trail and excellent riding! 👍
@@mtbjoser Thanks! Looks like you have some great San Diego runs! What are your favorite trails out there?
@@waymaniac Appreciate it, thanks for watching! I'd say E-Ticket is one of my favorites, it's pretty near to me and has some good flow to it. I also like the trails at the Daley Ranch area. San Diego has a lot of climbs, tech, and almost desert-like terrain (not too many trees). I'm actually originally from the Bay but moved to SD. I didn't ride when I was up in the Bay (East Bay) but I have some friends who ride there now. Next time I visit them I'll have to get some rides in!
@@mtbjoser E-ticket is solid! Cool. I'll have to check out Daley Ranch next time I'm in the area!
I’m still trying to figure out where this trail is. Is it closer to sycamore canyon or Fanita? Looks fun.
Sycamore Canyon off Strathmore Drive. It's definitely a hike to get to it. The less painful climb is around where you would take Mongo, and there is a sign at the top. It's definitely worth it if you're in to tech trails! Some of the features you definitely want to stop and scope out first though.
Looked recently groomed
@@JD-ig5cj Yeah, I've heard they have been doing a lot of trail work in the zone!
A great "rocky" ride!
Thanks! One of my favorites in SD.
Oh man those opening high-alt drone shots were amazing. Mix more of those in throughout the vid
Thanks, bud! Yeah I’ll try that next time. Sometimes the drone has a mind of its own and gets lost in the trees though.
Some of it looks familiar. I think we hiked in the opposite direction.
Yeah I think you hiked down High on the Hog and finished at Chicken Point.
Brings back great memories of us hiking The Hog Trail. Love that your shadow leads the way!
If you ride down the north side (heading towards the 52 freeway) the trail is more chunky and has better flow. Also ties right into E-Ticket
Sweet! Thanks for the heads up. I'll check that out next time I'm riding Mission Trails.
Trail kicked my butt the other day. Working up to hitting that big rock roll near the beginning.
nice! Yeah between the tech climb and all the features on the way down it's a tough loop. It seems like there are endless features and side hits to explore too. Have you ridden Barrel trail yet?
@@waymaniac I’ve done barrel roll but not barrel, how is it?
@@dakotakirby5673 Pretty gnarly! It has some big features, but also some more reasonable ones for progression. It's definitely worth checking out!
Awesome run man. Straight down the middle is the best way.
Thanks, man! I need to give that line a go! I've been getting cold feet because of how it's been washed out lately though. Nice skydio videos!
Nice job on this video. Short but had most the good parts of the trail. The drone video was cool too.
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
I stay even more to the left and go right over the top.

@@Spencer_Bikes sweet! Good to know. I'll have to give that line a go!
@@waymaniac Yeah! just stay off the brakes and keep your weight centered on the bike! You got it!

This looks like a lot of fun!
yeah, it's a good one! Next time we're SC we should ride it.
Nice riding, I'm heading out there this weekend. What time was that when you guys were riding? It'll be after 1pm before I get out there and wanted to see if I had a few hours before you loose the light. lol.
Thanks! It's a great trail and zone. It was a morning ride so daylight wasn't an issue. It's about an 8.5 mile loop, but with breaks it took about 2 hours and 20 minutes. Kibbles 'n Bits is tougher than your average climb. I hear Bunny to Fossil Canyon is an easier climb if you're looking to save time. I road Bom Voyage around 3:30 last month while there was still daylight savings and lighting wasn't an issue. Have a great ride!
Amazing !
Thanks!
Nice run! Replayed the waterfall clip a few times to try and learn from your line.
Thanks! I hope it helps. I do the same, so I can try to hit the same line, but sometimes the waterfall just takes me where it wants me to go haha
Same, thanks for the video
You dropped your goggles
Worth it!
That’s one of my favorite trails, it’s more fun on a Hardtail
@@dnutr agreed! The Crack used to terrify me. It felt great to finally be able to ride it out. I don't think I'm up for trying it on a hard tail yet though haha. Do you get bucked or is it still smooth if you ride it well?
Being from the Midwest, I always wanted to ride in Moab and did so some years ago but because I was by myself I didn't do Slickrock. Very cool you new guys took it on. Did you have dropper seats so you could adjust them going up and down the hills? And what tire pressure did you run?
Nice! Moab is a great spot. IT was my first time as well. What zones did you ride? Moab Brand Trails and Dead Horse Point have some good warm up trails. Yeah, I would definitely recommend a dropper! You go from steep uphill to steep down hill pretty often. The bikes were rentals, so I don't remember the exact tires - some Maxxis make- probably Minion or High Roller. Almost anything should grip really well out there though.
oh sorry. I read tires, not tire pressure. I didn't check but pinch flats can be pretty common in the rocks here, so i would run tubeless and higher pressure. 30 psi or so.
@@waymaniac I rode the Dead Horse Point trails since I was there myself and it was the very first time although I've done some mountain biking racing prior to that in the Midwest. I also did some road ridesf rom Dead Horse going all the way through Canyonlands and back - about 60 miles. Another was doing the Needles ride which is on the south end of Canyonlands like 40-50 miles away or so. Next time I get there - and you might want to consider this - is to ride the White Rim Trail which goes deep into Canyonlands and you come out 100 miles later. Here's the link - www.nps.gov/cany/planyourvisit/whiterimroad.htm. Check out some YT videos about it.
@@waymaniac I'm still using an older MTB bike with innertubes but I also have like 2 mm thick Slime rubber liners that stop flats. I've run 26 lbs. in the rear and 24 lbs. in the front racing it on some advanced, black-diamond, and double-black diamond trails. But on slickrock, I can see 30 psi or so because the rock is pretty sticky.
@@ninemilliondollars Cool. Slickrock is less jagged than some of the looser Moab trails, so pinch flats are less of a risk than on say The Whole Enchilada.
Great vid man! Some serious exposure there!
Thanks! Yeah, Moab gets pretty gnarly. The exposure makes for great view though!
Awesome ride, incredible scenery. How about some background music?
