Living a slow, creative, rural life in the north of England.
Hello, my name's Amy. I'm an indie author of fantasy and SF, living in the north-west of England. I've spent most of my life in the countryside, and the last decade running small rural businesses with my partner (and now our daughter).
These days, I divide my time between being a mum, writing, maintaining our holiday business, and - very soon - converting a derelict barn into our family home.
Join me for a journey through writing, books, DIY building, gardening, hiking, and everything else that goes into living a slow, simple, creative - and, most importantly, fulfilling - rural life.

2k words during the morning is crazy (in a good way). I'm lucky if I get 1k done a week.
Any progress in a week is worthwhile! It all adds up. And I definitely didn't always write so fast or so regularly. I'm feeling pretty focused right now, so I've just got to hang on to that for as long as possible.
Gorgeous shots of the mist! 😍 I’m excited to hear more about your next book 🎉
Thank you! I have a feeling this next round of edits is going to take me longer than I thought... But I'm working on it!
I'm working on my 3rd book. It's a romance novel City girl meets country boy
That's awesome! Writing romance is such a mystery to me, but I do enjoy reading it!
@@AmySandersonWrites It's funny because I don't usually read romance but that seems to be mostly what I write. Once I finish this book I might try something else...
I do love a bit of genre-hopping! I always come back to fantasy, but I have so many ideas for other genres.
love that!
Thank you!
Gorgeous footage of the hills
Thanks! We've found some fantastic hiking spots recently, but this was one of the best.
Your land is beautiful!
Thank you! We do feel very lucky to be here.
This was interesting! I haven't heard of the book but I enjoyed hearing your thoughts on it. I absolutely loved the Lake District interlude, it was beautiful and set the scene really well ☺️
Thank you! I can never resist including the Lake District in my vlogs. It's truly a dream to film!
i loved these books as a kid and just finished a re-read them! i wouldn't really ever recommend to others other than for nostalgia reasons, though, but it seems like your hopes are tempered properly, so you may enjoy. and hobgobins *DO* smell like fish!
It's definitely interesting reading them for the first time as an adult. I do find myself feeling a certain amount of nostalgia, too. They take me back to the days when I first discovered authors like Terry Brooks - though I seem to recall he had trolls instead of hobgoblins!
Gorgeous footage!
Thank you! :D
Oh wow! Absolutely gorgeous!
It was glorious. And the best weather we've had all summer!
This is beautiful, thank you for sharing! Spring is definitely in full force here in the Southern US. I've been using a commonplace journal as well to mainly document what I've been reading and taking notes from some of my books and I find it really helpful. It's for sure not easy taking breaks from the news but it seems like you're finding a great way to create some boundaries. Happy to have stumbled upon this video!
Ah, thank you so much! The news is tricky, isn't it? I find it easy to step away from social media for days at a time, but I want to know what's happening in the world and that can easily become overwhelming. I need to take more notes from what I read, actually. I've been listening to a lot of non-fiction lately, but it's not always easy to absorb information that way. I need to remember to get my commonplace book out more often!
I just saw an Instagram post that said 'You made it past the darkest 6 weeks!' and showed the 3 weeks on either side of the solstice... phew!!
Yeah, I'm definitely glad to be past that part of the year. I'm 100% ready for spring now!
How are you able to make an income ?
Living in interior Alaska (and today being the solstice) we have about 3.5 hours of sunlight and I can vouch for pretty much all of these tips! *Especially* getting outside! Easier said than done, but it’s so helpful! I love your videos so much. They’re always so comforting!
Ah, thank you so much! That's lovely to hear. I hope the Alaskan winter is treating you well!
Loved hearing more about your life.x
Ah, thank you! I've been in a bit of a writing slump recently, so it's been nice to talk about something else for a change!
Wooooot! for BaRN! That sounds like a success story that expands people's choices 😍
B4RN truly has been life-changing for us and for a lot of other small businesses, too. I honestly can't sing their praises enough! Also, I will absolutely take suggestions on a name for the iron! I think that machine is part of the family at this point... :D
Contest for Naming the Ironing Machine?? 😄
Lovely Cumbria! Enjoyed this slice of rural life 🥰
It's stil autumn. 21st december is when winter starts.
Technically, yes, but it doesn't feel anything like autumn here!
What sort of temperatures do you normally get for winter?? (2) do you have enough food & wood incase you can't get out of your driveway. (3) do you use a generator in case no power. I heard U.K. HAD A REALLY BAD SNOW.?? I HOPE YOU HAVE A SAFE HOME TO LIVE IN. COLD ,WEATHER , SNOW, I LIVE IN NZ OUR SUMMER IS GOING TO BE CAZY UP & DOWN.❤
Hi there. Our winters here are usually fairly mild, especially compared to the rest of northern Europe. We do get some snow and frost, but the average temperature is usually a few degrees above freezing. We are well stocked up with food and fuel, though. There's definitely been an unusual amount of snow in Cumbria this week, but we're ready for it! That's a good point about the generator, though. We don't have one at the moment, but we're seriously considering installing one when we get power installed to our new house. I actually spent a summer in NZ back when I was eighteen and loved it there. Wish we had a bit of that sunshine here now!
@AmySandersonWrites our summers are crazy at the moment. The North Island is being lashed by storm after storm plus cyclone especially. Along east coast.. I live in S.Island & my family live in N.Island have lived down here for 40yrs I would never go back home to live. I'am glad you spent time in NZ . That would have been an eye opener. I HAVE HEARD UK has been lashed with awful Snow on news.? Are you trying to turn your barn into a home & are you going off grid?? NZ HAVE A LOVELY WK
Hello Amy! Fellow vlogger from the Cumbrian coast! *waves*
Hello there! Lovely to have you here. Hope you're staying warm today. I think your side of the county got a lot more snow than ours did this weekend!
I'm on the coast so we escaped it! @@AmySandersonWrites
Hi it looks like you are all going through challenging times and the weather hasn’t helped you. I just came across your vlog by accident and admire what you’re doing. My husband and I live in Spain just outside the village of Montefrio. The village was described in National Geographic as one of the prettiest villages in the world. Montefrio is the words for cold mountain. In the summer months it is unbelievably hot . Spring time is beautiful with the flowers, trees and mountains. Winter can be really cold and sometimes the water freezes, but by 12 o’clock water is useable. I love living in the countryside among the Olive groves, it’s so special. We have three dogs and 7 🐱 cats. All are strays except two . I love your animals. How do you keep them warm? I hope that you stay warm and safe and that the New year brings you better weather to work on your barn. I shall be following you and hope your vlog picks up. Tk care. Xx
I just found out your channel few hours ago, and actually by chance... By the way, I'm also an author (from few generations before yours), and I find it interesting what you happen to share on your channel... Your method of work, how you deal with our common writers issues, and it kinda makes me wonder how much the environment around us interferes into our creativity and the way that we write... I mean, my reality is the very opposite of yours, but still, we both write and find inspiration (and motivations) on very different realms of the reality... But how much does it interferes on our works?! I really wonder...
I think our environment plays a huge role in what and how we write. You're right, sometimes it causes interference - I know I could get a lot more done if my circumstances were different! But also, living in a different environment would make me a different writer altogether, and I don't think that's something I'd want to change. It's interesting how much the issues of creativity cross boundaries, though. We can meet writers of a different age, different background, living on the other side of the world, and still find a lot in common!
Staring out of the window is a very important part of the writing process!
It is! I never realised how much time I spent doing it until I started filming my writing sessions!
I’m trying the Snowflake Method for this year as well, but I’m am still on the one paragraph summary. It’s so difficult to summarize each part in just one sentence, but I’m getting there. I think I’ll need extra help with the plot structure, though, so when I get to the longer summary I might have to combine Snowflake with something more structured like Save the Cat!. Snowflake ❄️ feels like a lot of work for just two weeks, but it’ll have to do. This is the method that feels right for me, right now.
I've definitely found the Snowflake Method time-consuming. I started this outline way back in July, and whilst I haven't been working on it all that time, there's just so much thought and brainstorming that has to go into each part of the process. I still don't think I'm going to be completely done before NaNo! I think combining Snowflake with Save the Cat could work really well. I'm actually more of a pantser by nature, so I like the freedom of the Snowflake Method - but there's maybe a bit too much freedom if you're more of a plotter!
So excited to find your channel!! New subscriber here. I’m super excited about NaNoWriMo!! I’m working on a cozy witchy romance book. :)
Oh, that sounds amazing! Every time I try to write something cozy, it ends up becoming far too dark... But I love reading them!
Loving the autumnal vibes! Wishing you a very awesome NaNo!
And you! I don't feel at all ready yet... But there's still time!

Such beautiful scenery!
It really was gorgeous. I wish we could have some of that sunshine back, too!
Lovely to see you back again!
Thank you! It's nice to be making videos again! 😊
We all hit a funk here and there! I’m glad you have a plan to come out of it!
Thank you! I think I'm definitely better at getting myself back on track than I used to be. If only I could say the same about my reading slumps...
If I start vlogging about my books each and every vlog will be about a new book because I can never hold myself to anything 😂
Oh, I know that feeling SO well. I've got better at finishing things with practice, but I have countless stories that I never mention in vlogs because I only ever wrote the first chapter!
I love this little experiment! 10 minutes sounds like so little, until you actually try to add it into every day. Congrats on getting more words and figuring out a way to get more writing in during the little moments!
Thank you! I had a lot of fun with it. I have a tendency to make my new writing routines really complicated, so this was a nice change!
500 words in 10 minutes?!
I did come close, but only once! 😂
It's been so strange not having rain for so long!
It has! We're supposed to get some this weekend so fingers crossed!
Hi just found your channel. Loved your vlog. Just subscribed. Always exciting to start a new book. I love that feeling. 😘
Lovely to have you here! New books are just the best, aren't they? Probably why I start so many drafts that don't get past the first chapter!
@@AmySandersonWrites absolutely the best xx🥰
Really interesting to hear about your process! I wish this was discussed more often. I'm still trying to figure out my own process, even though thanksfully I have some clues now... Thanks
That's great to hear. It can be hard trying to make sense of how other writers work, because everyone's process is so unique. The best you can do when you're starting out is try a bit of everything and see what works for you!
Looking forward to seeing what you're going to work on next.x
Thank you! Definitely lots more to come over the summer - if I can keep up!
The 2 Bank Holidays were very discombobulating!
They really were. Who knew one extra day would make such a difference!
*Hi. Please check your email*
Spring has finally hit over in interior alaska too! Our spring still has mounts of snow and giant mud puddles though 😂
Ah, we haven't had any snow for a while apart from very high in the hills. It's raining heavily this morning, though, so we'll have plenty of mud soon! 😂
Well done on your progress.
Thank you! ❤️
I just found your channel through my recommendations and damn, I really wish you to get more recognition here on youtube as you make really nice quality and well edited videos, so interesting to see the process for somebody producing literature. Although I'm not interested in writing myself, I study foreign languages, different literatures and stuff so I always find the figure of the writer a very interesting one. Keep up the good work ^_^ PS: Also tiny homes are super cool so that aspect added in makes your channel even more interesting to me :)
Thank you so much. I always think there's a lot of crossover between writers and students, as well as between writers and other creative artists. There's a lot to learn from people in other disciplines. I'm always pleased by how many people are interested in tiny home living. We don't plan to be in ours forever, but I think it's something everyone should try at least once in life. If certainly gives you a new perspective on how much space and how many possessions you need to be comfortable!
How lovely to have a day with nothing planned! ❤
It is - especially when it's such a rarity!
I love your vlogs! Always relaxed and they don't make me feel like trash if I don't write as much as the vloger... I can often get this feeling with other people's vlogs, but not yours! Yay, thank you, I'm not going to kill myself with work today but do what I'm able to in a relaxed way too <3
Ah, that's so lovely to hear! I always hope people find these vlogs motivating rather than stressful. Enjoy your work today - and yes, take it easy, too!
Well done.x
Thank you! It's been a good week!
Maybe you can give more scene like time leaps you're writing or do something else. Too many talking heads in the video I think. But still, I watch to the end. Hehehe..
So beautiful!
It was. For once, I'm actually missing the snow!
Well done! Amazing work. X
Thank you! It's been a good couple of months for writing!
Get well soon and sending healthy vibes your way xx
Thank you so much! ❤️
