This band warms my heart every time I hear them. They put on a wonderful entertaining show. Thank you for this great exhibition of talent and joy. Lived in the phila area for many years. My wife and I have moved to NC recently. This music brings us back. We shared with family and friends here as well as overseas. They all loved listening and watching. God bless you guys/gals and thank you!! ❤
Jimmy Good is great!😘
Wow !!!😊😊
My Dad and my brother both painted that containment unit there behind the string band back in the late 80’s
Pretty crazy how it rises and lowers so it can be painted.
Happy new years 50s 60s 70s 80 s
Good times 2023
Quote that really hit home: "That day Everybody is better than they are the rest of the time." That right there is Diversity, Inclusiveness, Community. But ya know what, just keep bringing up "blackface" and "gay-bashing" and you fickle mushheads will get your wish and the uniqueness that attracted you to Philadelphia will be gone. First official, city-sponsored parade was 1901. Give us that much time and people will fuck up, but don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. A rant about "cancel culture". Maybe my Father and Mother didn't finish high school, but they both instilled in us a real gem that I'd like to share. "Getting all butt hurt, taking your ball and going home is only gonna make it worse for ya." In other words, treat the opposing ideas as your enemy, but don't treat the person speaking them like one. Face your interlocutor and attempt to communicate your ideas through dialogue. Then maybe later, when you're sitting down having a cup of coffee with someone who would as soon spit in your face a few years ago (or vice versa) ... that's a fuckin awesome thing. I. Am. So fuckin proud of my Philadelphia heritage. The Mummers are a huge part of that. Happy New Years.
If I knew I could have seen this, I would have moved to Philadelphia years ago.
Doesn't get old!
Yahoo!! My hometown will always be with me through these videos even though I moved away years ago. Thank you for the great memories!!
I wish you guys would come to Indianapolis Indiana and march in the 500 Festival Parade!
They did in the 90’s.

Great sound and show ! Love it when you play & march. It makes the energy level extreme !
Back to the 1950's
Hi Beloved friends
If it feels good to u.
Every day
Hi Guys
Great documentary ! I’ve been a pipe band drummer for 25 years. If I wasn’t 90 miles from Philly I would love to be in a Mummers Club/ band ! 🎊🎉🎈🎇🎆🎼🎶🪕🎷🪗🥁🥂
Great Job Downtowners!! I thoroughly enjoyed your performance. Excellent theme choice from my nephew Mike & as always, superb dancing from my niece Taylor. And…….you’re costumes fit the theme & should have scored higher!! Way to go👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Way to go.You look and sound fantastic💯!
I have been retired from the parade since 1996, & I can tell you because the parade has been moved to city hall, You destroyed any chance of the people it belonged to which was those of South Philadelphia to ever accept you again. Many have moved out of the area because the tradition was taken away from us . Many died off because of old age. Etc.. you no longer have the love & support that you once had because all of you have betrayed the many who loved you so much. This is coming from a former Mummer. Keep letting the city political greed guide you. You will soon learn that the parade will be history, not part of the future history.
Thank you for everything Michael! Here’s a little something for fun: ua-cam.com/video/vxyJAd2PY40/v-deo.html
Once again the left destroys everything it touches.
What’s the difference between a North Philly vs South Philly vs West Philly.. 🤔 💭 ❓
Thank the moors for that.
In watching this it seems they are trying to pass the buck as to why the Parade has lost its appeal to native Philadelphians. Im a native, i remember when the Parade finished before sundown, i remember where the performing stations were in South Philly. They began to micro manage the Parade in the mid to late 80's and it was downhill ever since! I was invited to march in 1989 with the Kline Club, a Fancy Brigade from South Philly which has since disbanded. I was along to photograph the group as they made their way up towards City Hall. As a participant i saw first hand the amount of work that goes in to organizing such an event, each group spends thousands of dollars of their own money every year, to bring this spectacular Parade to the City annually. That day was unusually warm for January, it was in the high 50's and we had light periods of rain. As we made our way up, you saw immediately the amount of space they were using to distance each group, we were two block behind and this made for a long day, that year if not mistaken Channel 3 KYW was broadcasting the Parade, WCAU 10 had it a few years earlier, in essence every TV station had a crack at broadcasting the Parade, KYW was responsible in part i was told in the spacing or distancing of each group. This trend began to snowball in the 90's, the City began to use the new Convention Center to host The Show of Shows which was traditionally held at the Civic Center in University City, the Show of Shows was a money maker for the String Bands. The City also began to corral the Parade to serve Center City crowds, excluding South Philadelphia altogether, this happened between 1995 through to 1999, the excuse used was the construction of the Avenue of The Arts. Nowadays it has become the Center City New Years Parade! I don't blame South Philly residents for turning their backs, you also had non Philadelphians making decisions on the route. The Parade has always had the Comics, it seems there is this underlying discontent for the Comics, they are after all where it all began, and they always were expected to poke fun at the City, a Municipal blunder or a Politician, (always something to poke fun at in this town) they also have to realize, guys in drag have been a part of the Parade for decades, now they are injecting Political Correctness in to the Parade, and they are ultimately destroying it. I do believe however, these groups should be respectful to all people. Everything has been put under a microscope in todays society. We have a great tradition here, and it is in danger of becoming a memory.
Bring back the old root bacuse i'm withe Holly Rollers nyb and i would love to march the old root
I went to my first parade back in the mid 2000s (before the route change). I seem to recall that there was more playing “on the move” whereas now it’s all about the standstill feature show for the TV cameras.
Swimmin Wit Da Fishies ...you’re correct in that there is too much standing around. The string bands do not approve of the current format (for the most part) we request each year that it change back. We have been denied to this point. We try our best to play for the crowd, be cheerful and get pictures with every last fan that comes out. We love our fans and thanks for sharing your feedback! Thanks for watching.
Michael P. Jacobs Jr. Thank you for the UA-cam coverage! I’m not always able to get to the parade, and the live internet coverage isn’t always reliable. Why has the request been denied? Is there a financial reason?
Swimmin Wit Da Fishies you’re welcome. If you have Facebook follow the Philadelphia Mummers String Band association Facebook page for full coverage of the parade in real-time throughout tomorrow’s string band division. To answer question: no. Not completely financial although they (city of Phila) claim that the traditional route won’t be possible as of now due to a combination of reasons that seem to change frequently so o don’t know, personally, what the complete truth behind the reason is. It was changed in the first place to try something new. We. Know that did not work and continue to push! Trust me when I say everything the string bands do is FOR the fans, our hearts are with them.
Michael P. Jacobs Jr. All the best to you and all Mummers for a great parade tomorrow and a Hapoy New Year! I always share your videos whenever possible. It’s a wonderful tradition that should stay alive!
Welcome to Israel, dear friends!
IZ wish my Grandmother had lived to see this. She loved the Mummers
Missing the Mummers is as if it’s not a NEW YEAR. GO MUMMERS!!!
I hope this fun parade makes a big comeback, going thru all parts of town and including gays, blacks, whites, Hispanics, Asians, etc etc. It should go thru smaller streets where it feels more intimate.
David Gantt Me too, my friend. There's plans being discussed so hopefully we see some new things in 2019! Thanks for sharing your Mummers Thoughts.
Wonderful documentary...thank you! I remember the original route went past St. Agnes' and I don't recall any group that didn't stop there on Broad Street and perform for the patients. Back in the 1960s and 1970s, there was no other place to be than on Broad Street on New Year's Day for the Philadelphia Mummers Parade to welcome in the New Year! When I joined the Navy, on New Years Day, I would call home from the pay phone in the barracks, and my parents would hold the phone to the television so I could listed to the string bands...I would do the Mummer's strut in the passageway while listening...good times! I am grateful the parade is available for people currently serving in the military and not able to take leave and make it home for the holidays...able to have a little bit of home on New Years day...
@Autumnalstar61 Myself and Matt are both really glad you enjoyed it! As a marcher in the parade I can recall stopping at St. Agnes in my first few parades up the street. It was always a fun stop to make. Even in the bitter cold this year (in the teens) people STILL came out to support us and watch along the route. I was amazed at the many people who told me and my fellow members "If the parade is still on and you guys are here than we're here too! The cold won't stop us!" It's a beautiful and heart-warming thing to know that people truly enjoy what we do because we honestly get more joy than you could possibly imagine doing this parade FOR THE PEOPLE before any other reason! Sorry I wasn't able to respond sooner, my friend. Continue following us. We're on all social medias! Best, Mike
Jacobs. Church. Beautiful documentary. Jack Machesney turned me onto to the Mummers. You wanna read a Mummers Book? Check out Bar Stools and Bus Stops. The Mummers section begins on page 34. Good stuff.
We're both glad you liked it. I appreciate your book suggestion I will absolutely look into it. If you'd like a book with some great photography and stories/history of the mummers I suggest looking at "Life, Liberty, and the Mummers" by Ed Kennedy (he is a great friend of the mummers and did a fantastic job putting it together). Best, Jacobs (& Church)
They should all dress the same, eliminate all music and parodies and walk in a straight line. That way no one will be offended.
@ZingsVideos As a member of the parade and someone who loves Mummers History I do know, and think, that joking and poking fun is part of the tradition in some divisions of the parade. With that said there is a fine line between joking and hurting someone's feelings. That line shouldn't be crossed, ever. This parade is about family, community, inclusion, and expression through artistic mediums such as dance, music, and costumes. Anyone and everyone from all classes, races, and ethnic groups are welcomed and should feel THAT they are welcomed and loved! Thanks for your "Mummers Thoughts"!! Keep watching! Mike
im soo upset i never got to go on gmr :(
I grew up in Philadelphia and as a child always went to the parade. Even now you can see where the parade makes people laugh and smile. I see where the parade did march down to South Phila. this year. Yes, it use to start in South Phila and moves up Broad past City Hall. Now it starts in North Phila and goes to south Phila. which is ok. I also see how professional they have become. I loved the music of the past, this year I didn't think the music matches some of the themes. But it was great to watch!
Hey Linda! Thanks for sharing your "Mummers Thoughts"!! Hope you continue watching and enjoying us! Best, Mike
Great documentary, well done. Mummers Lives Matter!
Awesome documentary!
Great video. Very well done.
