Prelude & Fugue for Flute, Violin & Violoncello (2024)
This is a Prelude & Fugue I wrote in 2 days for Flute, Violin & Violoncello as part of the Go Compose! course from Sound Festival 2024.
This piece is not programmatic- it is completely abstract in its conception and construction.
Using changing time signatures, extended techniques (which I've done my best to recreated on Musescore, but unfortunately for the glissandi, not all of them were convincing...), modality & bitonality, various fugal techniques, etc, the Prelude & Fugue opens with a short overgrown Prelude, following (though not without foreshadowing) into the Fugue, lasting the rest of the work, interspersed with a few interludes/interruptions, before ending in a tonic stretto.
I wrote this piece in 2 days, and had it premiered on the 16th of October, 2024.
The premiering ensemble consisted of Ruth Morley (Flute), Jackie Shave (Violin) & Robert Irvine (Violoncello). They did a fantastic job, especially given the virtuosic ensemble playing needed for great performance.
The playback for this video was created using Musesounds on Musescore 4.

This is a short introduction & Allegro I wrote in 2 days for Flute, Viola & Vibraphone as part of the Go Compose! course from Sound Festival 2023. There is no program for this piece, and so writing about it is of course rather difficult! Lamentations, for Strings (2024)
Переглядів 262Місяць тому
A short, sombre harmony study for Strings I wrote recently. Primarily a study in harmonic richness, using 6-8 part harmonisations, constant structures, poly chords (for that bright #1 & #5 over a Lydian harmony) etc. Feel free to ask questions about it in the comments. #composer #strings #lamentation #harmony #classicalmusic

My artworks (2021 - 23): a showcase (with Ravel)
Переглядів 553 місяці тому
A display of 4 of my mediocre artworks (all pen & paper), accompanied by music from Maurice Ravel. Ultimately, I'm a musician, not a visual artist! Please bear that in mind. This video was also useful in learning how to use a new video editing software, so I had a little fun with the Mickey-mousing in the edit. Music used (all by Maurice Ravel) - Oiseaux Tristes, from Miroirs (perf. Anne Queffé...
Sonatine: Menuet, by Maurice Ravel (arr. for orchestra by W. Ramsay)

NOTE: There is an issue with the Piccolo playback, in bars 40 & 42. The score is notated correctly as a G#, but for whatever reason, Musesounds decided to play an A. The issue with playback seems to occur only for this note on this instrument. Here is my orchestration of the 2nd movement of Ravel's Sonatine, originally for Solo Piano. #ravel #music #arrangement #piano #orchestra #bolero
Toccata, for Solo Piano (2023, rev. 2024)
Переглядів 2803 місяці тому
This is my Toccata for Solo Piano, a work I constantly churn over and revise. Generally in the style of the 20th century Toccatas by Maurice Ravel, Sergei Prokofiev & the lesser known Dimitar Nenov, which are really brilliant pieces that no doubt have influenced me past the initial choice in genre. "Toccata" literally translates to "Touched" and refers to a renaissance/baroque genre of keyboard...

I love it, great music<3
Sounds like a hell. Useful for a movie, for a horror game, or for something like that,
I'll be honest, a hell filled with microtonal music sounds pretty dope
this is amazing!
OMG this is giving the harmonies from the background during the Seymour scene in FFX.
Good stuff. What's sin an abbreviation for? Edit: nvm found it, caption was blocking text a bit haha
0:38 what a sequence :o
Stunning!
Thank you so much!
Thank you for your work. Some really nice contrapuntal writing.
Thank you so much!
This is absolutely astonishing!
Thank you so much!
Cool stuff!
mannn yes
Seeing amazing shit like this reignites me to go and try to compose something
Thank you so much, I'm glad I could be an inspiration!
@@Willow_Ramsay_Music hell yeah! I sent something to your email, dude :)
Fascinating!
colorful!
Great as always!
Thanks so much!
Out of curiosity, if I may, what's your process for finding these harmonies? Is there some theoretical method you use, or is it just by feel?
Mix of both! This isn't true for me all the time, but a good summation of my process might be something like: I find an effect, then I musically justify it. Or, feel then think. Although I do believe that I can feel my way around most compositional dilemmas, I have yet to write something which I don't think I can justify it theoretically (although that always comes afterwards). For theoretical methods, I call upon my jazz & classical trainings for my harmonies, particularly in how they relate to the circle of 5ths (e.g. axis theory if I'm looking to achieve unusual but still effective tonal progressions, and this applies to both classical & jazz styles). Hope this was of some help!
sounds like polyriddim
I had a listen, and I don't think I hear any similarities...
So sweet, can i sample this? cheers

reminds me of the city by bernard hermann
I still haven't listened to that piece, despite how much I adore Hermann's music...
really pretty!
Thank you so much!
Very profound piece.
31edo always rocks, love finding new microtonal composers/compositions
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Great picks, thanks for the video!
this is really pretty ! the lush harmonic complexity and usage of texture is reminiscent to 'the city' by bernard herrmann , but of course , it is incomparable to these beautiful voicings in your piece i am enamoured with some of these chords . this elegy is overflowing with deep , heart-rending , tender emotion , and the last few chords of the piece are filled with such yearning . the trill is so beautiful !!
Thank you so much, I am so glad you enjoyed it! I really love Bernard Hermann's work- but I haven't actually listened to "The City" before. I'll be sure to check it out!
Very good stuff!
Thank you so much!
this is why i love 31 so much 😭
Thank you so much! I really love the system as well, so many underused colours!
Hey man, nice work! Any chance you could send the PDF, cause I want to work on this! Spectacular!

kapustin's piano concertos just hit different
Agreed!!
Schnittke is among my favorite composers but I've never been a fan of his Piano Concerto. Also, not sure if you'd count this as obscure, but I think the Ligeti Piano Concerto is the best contemporary piece of that genre.
I thought the Ligeti Piano, as amazing and wonderful as it is, is much more well known than the Schnittke, at least in the West. Schnittke's piano concerto is a really odd one- I personally like it a lot, but of course it's not to everyone's taste.
This is really astonishingly good .
Thank you so much, glad you enjoyed it!
I like the orchestration, I'm sure Ravel himself would've also used similar instruments! I especially love that you gave the main melody in bars 23-27 to the oboe! If I may give a personal recommendation, try adding french horns to some of the larger and/or lush bits (eg. bars 23-27) to add more depth to the sound. personally I think it would sound great, but that's just a little idea of mine.
Thank you! I debated adding French Horns, but I find, alongside the other brass instruments, I don't feel very that I'm very good at writing for them, especially as a section. Maybe I'll try it in future, as I do very much see (and generally agree with) your point!
If a work is unknown there's usually a good reason for it. Even good composers failed to produce memorable pieces 90% of the time.
Your first point disregards all new/contemporary music- and takes out all the joy of discovery when listening to pieces, tunes or songs that you haven't heard before. I agree with your second point though! The greats are held too high, while those trapped beneath aren't given their due moments.
Any cristov rec on Spotify?
Unfortunately, not that I've found. For some of the ones I've found (on UA-cam), you can find a playlist in the description of this video with a few goodies.
08:40 I've been in love with the Andante movement of Christov's Concerto for many years.
Oh it's wonderful! May I ask how you came across it initially? Took me a long time to discover it.
@@Willow_Ramsay_Music I've seen it here on YT. There used to be a channel named @fyrexia that posted the very video you've used here. It got banned like 10 years ago and reborn as a phoenix under the name @fyrexianoff 😀 I've listened to it back then. I've listened to lots of obscure pieces on that channel, it's amazing
@@Willow_Ramsay_Music UA-cam suggested it to me...or I was just perusing some channel... I have no idea, it was before my hair started turning grey 😂
Leroy Anderson Piano Concerto: "Derivative Pastiche"
To an extent, isn't all music derivative?
These works are pretty forgettable. Leading subjects are contrived and insignificant.
Hmm. I find this sort of criticism could apply to ANY piece of music, as it is a matter of subjective opinion.
Boris Tchaikovsky is one composer I can just never form an opinion on. Do I hate his music? Do I love his music? I have no clue, and I've listened to him extensively.
Is he a composer whose music you wish to keep listening to?
@@Willow_Ramsay_Music I'm not sure! I often listen to music by him out of pure curiosity. He's certainly an oddball and I never find his music satisfying per se, but I always find it interesting.
@@seanfogarty5559 That's really interesting. I found that with Bartók (& Lutoslawski, for another example) at first, it was strange, weird even. Now he's one of my favourite composers! Ultimately, time will decide whether you end up liking it or not, regardless of what my experience with this sort of thing ended up becoming.
Here's an interesting one. Neo Romantic/Modern but freshly written: ua-cam.com/video/FFurfBrPPPU/v-deo.html
I found some info about Hristov on the Danish? Wikipedia page (and other sources) Dimiter Yordanov Hristov (Christoff) (born October 2, 1933 in Sofia , Bulgaria , died February 26, 2017 ) was a Bulgarian composer, professor , teacher, music theorist, music historian and music researcher. Born in Sofia. He graduated from the State Academy of Music where he studied composition under Marin Goleminov. He has worked as a researcher at the Institute of Art Studies at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. After receiving the Doctor of Art degree, he was appointed Professor of Polyphony and Introduction to the Theory of Music at the State Academy of Music, as well as of Polyphony, Music Theatre of the 20th century and Contemporary Polyphonic Structures, Polyphony and Modern Trends in Music and Art in General at Sofia University and at the New Bulgarian University. He has composed an opera, orchestral, chamber and piano works. He has written 3 symphonies, orchestral works, chamber music, 3 violin concertos, cello concertos, 3 piano concertos, vocal works, 2 operas, choral works, etc
Thank you so much for your research! It's a shame that this information is relatively obscure, as very few know him.
Rautavaara's first has really become my favorite piano concerto since I discovered it a few years ago. Really enjoy this channel and realize I missed out on both Schnittke's and Bartok's concertos. Thanks for the recommendations!
No problem, glad I was able to help you discover some new music!

I think Healey Willan's piano concerto is fantastic and it definitely qualifies as obscure - I was told once it's never even had an American premiere!
