Sweeping Up My Last CAT1 Points!
This is Giro De La Montagna from the 2024 Gateway Cup Cat 2/3. This race was a great way to cap off a long season of crit racing. The whole Skyway/Domestique squad was firing on all cylinders. In this video I break down my mental strategy for staying engaged and fresh, and then do a deep dive on the crucial moments in the final laps. Last crit of the year! Last crit as a Cat2!

Crit Racing Needs Safer Barricades
Переглядів 7102 місяці тому
After a few horrific incidents including Legion of LA's Justin Williams' arm injury at Tulsa Tough, and Ryan Jastrab of Team Six nearly losing his arm at Salt Lake, several riders and fans have raised questions around barriers and general course safety. It seems that everyone agrees that SOMETHING needs to change, but no one agrees on WHAT that change needs to be. We asked that question on the ...

    Every sportsman should have the right to a fair competition regardless the sport especially on a professional level with absolutely No respect to persons.its outrageous to know a guy has put in max training max effort on to be sabotaged by an opponent rules should definitely be tightened up and I mean tight tight tight on that kind of stuff there’s also the serious risk of death or bodily harm (injury) not just the competition factor and Is why this shouldn’t be taken lightly as just some poor behavior by participants.

      I mean, he did receive a suspension for it, so I feel like that’s the system working. I could see some kind of “red card” system like the world tour is testing out though. That’s where multiple offenses escalate in penalty.

      What do you mean? I actually think people have been taking eachother to the curb in crits as long as they’ve existed. You just didn’t have GoPro footage of the incident, or the resulting fights afterwards until recently. I’m not saying any of that should be happening, but it’s also not anything new.

  • @SkyFalllast
    @SkyFalllast 14 днів тому

    All of it was fine by me until the blatant hard line to the curve. I wish Tim played his brake more before the turn to pinch Corey's line, while Justin should look for another rider to stone wall. Punishment fit the crime though. If it should scale up for multiple offenses

    • @JonathanCrain
      @JonathanCrain 14 днів тому

      The hard line all the way to the curb is the only egregious thing for sure. Tom is riding crazy, and probably annoying trying to infiltrate the train, but he’s one of the 5 or 10 riders in the US who’s proven he can and should be in the mix up there. Justin could have taken Tom wide without going all the way to the curb just to get him out of the train and been within the realm of plausible deniability.

    Nice work! The suggestion for a rule that requires / specifies properly overlapping scrim on all outside turn sections + start/finish could fix 85%+ of the issues, without a ton of extra purchasing or effort over what's typical, especially for the elite races. It would only mean slight changes in setup are mandated, vs new stuff and changes on the operations side. Would be easy to instruct someone to do (remember to thank your volunteers!). I am curious how this could become a petition or proposition to USAC. I'd sign! While I do love the plastic tables idea when I started trying to do some napkin math, I was surprised that one race found ones (or made them?) that are tall enough to really act as barriers. Looking around online, I only found traditional dining setups or square tables that would be about half the height needed. But plastic is a great idea for solid barriers; anyone who has placed the metal barriers knows they really suck to lift and set down; would be way easier to drive along tossing plastic tables out with two sandbags (20lb bags might be enough?) and probably faster on tear-down as well. The scrim setup might be trickier, since I think a lot of that is zip-tied to the metal rails. But maybe you can zip to the table leg instead and continue to do the overlap as suggested. Downsides that you still have to get all the tables, they're not likely to survive a ton of seasons of banging around on the ground, and transport space could become an issue because even if you found tables of the right size, they'll take up more space than the metal racks for the length of the course they have to cover.

Also Boplan is Belgian (I think) and every year at least one person in the Belgian media will complain about the Tour de France not wanting to use their barriers because they're not a French company. 😅 It's kind of unbelievable that even the biggest race in the world doesn't care more about their barriers. I also like that their barriers are tall so riders are less likely to get someone's phone in their face.

    • @JonathanCrain
      @JonathanCrain 2 місяці тому

      Does it though? Meaning, has that happened somewhere? PVC has some give, but I think there’s a pretty low chance it breaks, and even lower that the broken shrapnel would end up inside a racer. PVC can be pretty strong though. When I was young we built some quarter pipes with PVC coping that we would SLAM into and didn’t crack it. Not that it’s impossible to break, but a human body has a lot less concentrated force to shatter a pipe than a metal skateboard truck.

    Hey! As a victim of the metal barriers at Tulsa (video on my channel), I really appreciate this video and discussion. I’m not sure what my part in this is besides boycotting races with metal barriers from now on, but I’m glad more people are talking about it.

    Can you share a link or two where is this conversation happening? One of our hosts was severely injured at a major USAC event on the same barricade type. There are many low-hanging fruit barrier improvements that could have saved substantial and ongoing agony. We want to contribute to the conversation and apply some pressure on USAC & race organizers. It has to start top-down. USAC needs to lead the way. You're spot-on about the minimum necessary improvements to put *any* covering on the barriers. At least, even the cheapest possible fabric would be better than nothing. The foam core signage (32:18) would be a tremendous step up. Someone is going to get decapitated. Ask us how we know.

      So what I've heard is that USAC at least had a call with a few officials, promoters, and top level racers. I don't know if there's been any kind of concrete action from that conversation though. So there's no link to share, other than the public posts on Ty Magner's Instagram page and Robin Carpenter's substack. I've continued thinking about this since the podcast and I'm going to have a video coming out within the week detailing 3-5 suggestions I have for new guidelines. Open to hearing whatever you've got as well!

      We want to compile a list of serious injuries related to this crowd-control device type. User "@honey" in the chat replay, please reach out! "Barrier" is too generous. These are crowd-control devices designed for concerts and marathons. Not high-speed racing sports. Ronnie Toth, Casey Saunders, Michelle Howe, Ryan Jastrab... how many folks are going to have to suffer or die before we stop putting crowd control on the sides of courses that act as limb guillotines and impaling devices?

    • @Saturday_ProFuel
      @Saturday_ProFuel 2 місяці тому

      @@JonathanCrain Thank you for the reply! It's a shame they didn't reach out to Michelle for this conversation. They're aware of the incident at their event, and she's placed in the top five at USAC Pro Nats before. Maybe we'll hear from them. We'd certainly like to. Here are a few recommendations that are off the top of our heads for the *non-crit* usage of these crowd control devices. - On-barrier Banners, Signage, or Flags: Mesh cloth can be very strong and still allow air (wind) to travel through it but prevent limbs from getting in the "parallelogram" areas. - Tech Guide & Cue Sheet Course Feature Call-Outs: Like "Hey, by the way, here's where on the course besides the finish line where you can expect to have exposed guillotine crowd control devices. - Pre-Barrier Signage: "DANGER" should do the trick. Maybe "IMPALING AHEAD." Or "CAUTION!" The size of the signage needs to correlate with expected rider velocity. - They should never be used for changing directions without signage directly on them. Use stronger zip ties-much stronger. They break. As you mentioned, the second crowd control device the rider hits does tend to be immobile. - PVC would be excellent. Sandbag the bottom for weight. Our lead engineer could design a fence system like this in under a day.

    I've noticed that TR is pretty conservative with the AI FTP if you have taken time off but it seems to be way more accurate when you are consistently hitting workouts. The good thing about the workout levels is even if it does start you at a lower FTP, the workout levels will adjust quickly to keep you progressing forward so I've become less obsessed with the number

    • @JonathanCrain
      @JonathanCrain 3 місяці тому

      Yeah that makes sense. The more workouts you're doing from the TR platform, the more data points it has to go on. I know it takes outdoor and non TR stuff into account as long as you have the relevant accounts linked but the AI can compare so much easier with a TR workout. Thousands of other people have complete that exact workout and TR knows what their FTP looked like after, what the failure rate was, all that stuff.

    Great video! Just the level of attrition probably speaks to why the others didn’t attack. Does this get you the points to push you up too? I think the US rules are both fairer and more interesting than the UK rules, what do you reckon?

    • @JonathanCrain
      @JonathanCrain 3 місяці тому

      Points go 6 deep here, so of course I got 7th 😓 . That’s the sacrifice to win it though. My team mate Zac who won got a load of points here and he did get his upgrade. Yeah I like the US rules. It made for some really interesting racing during this series. Ribble Rebellion team wanted to win from the small break and not lap because Reign Storm has the best leadout train in the sport waiting in the field. It has created some goofy situations in the past, like Oscar Savilla’s Colombian team sending someone off the back to drop into the break and drive it forward. Ultimately DQd but the officials missed it in the moment. It can get messy, but that’s the price of interesting racing I think.

    I'm a retired old guy former road racer and this winter I want to ride inside some here at home. I've found a few used Stages SC3 smart bikes for $1000us - $1500us but will these free apps run with the SC3 thru my laptop/TV screen? Im semi computer retarded. Help? Why do people say the Stages SB20 is a better choice? I dont care about racing, or group rides, I just like the routes, say like Alpe D-Huez, and having my "ghost" from last week visible, etc..

    • @JonathanCrain
      @JonathanCrain 3 місяці тому

      The SC3 is more designed for gyms so I actually don't know if it would connect to these apps. If it does, I don't think it has erg mode which would automatically adjust your resistance for a workout, or sim mode which would adjust resistance on the virtual climbs. If you're an ex racer do you already have a bike? I'd say your cheapest and best option right now is probably a Wahoo Kickr Core. It's fully compatible with all the apps, including the free ones in this video, and it's about half the cost of the SC3.
